Lady Mary Shepherd, née Primrose was a Scottish philosopher who published two philosophical books, one in 1824 and one in 1827. According to Robert Blakey, in her entry in his History of the Philosophy of the Mind, she exercised considerable influence over the Edinburgh philosophy of her day.
I read this in my senior seminar about Lady Mary Shepherd. She does a good job arguing against Hume and other philosophers in this essay. While I can't say I'm convinced by her argument for cause and effect being the same thing, I'm not entirely against it either. Brilliant woman. She needs to be more noticed in the philosophical community.
