The Crimson Series #2

My Blood Runs Crimson: Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Rate this book
Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Maybe that's good advice, but the heart wants what the heart wants and sometimes that means doing whatever it takes no matter the cost. Rebecca Brant (Bex) has secured the position of editor-in-chief of the cammpus newspaper at the University of Alabama. Someone though, is making trouble, thinking Bex got the position through connections to a group of controlling campus elitists----the kind who will strike down anyone who gets in their way. Lane Kennedy Townsend, Bex's boyfriend has deep pockets and a political family legacy to live up to. As the head of the secret society on campus, he'll stop at nothing to keep the girl he loves safe. His roommate works at the paper, and Lane expects him to be his eyes and ears. But is asking him to be his girlfriend's bodyguard going too far? Sawyer Bennett, doesn't know what he's gotten himself into, but he does his best to keep his life as a lead quitarist, and his work at the newspaper separate. After working with Bex, he understands why his friend is so crazy for this girl. Sawyer comes to Bex's rescue following some terrifying incidents, but what happens when he realizes he has feelings for her? This is a story that illustrates both the longing to hold on to traditions and the need for change. A mix of suspense and romance, My Blood Runs Crimson is full of loyal friends, hated enemies, blackmail and secret-society operations after dark. Because of sexual content this book is best suited for mature readers. All Crimson series books read as standalones.

If you're one who believes the (negative) misconceptions about indie books, this one will set you straight. Full of themes which highlight loyalty, love, friendship, romance, betrayal, racial discrimination, legacies and traditions, My Blood Runs Crimson is packed with all the elements that make a great book. Written in multiple(3) 1st person POV, a task not easily perfected, the author has successfully delivered a story that is intriguing, fun, sexy and with a bit of suspense.

Writing in 1st person POV can be challenging as it can come across as more scripted to the reader. Though, Perrie Patterson has skillfully used the advantage of this type of POV to engage her readers so you are right there in the story, experiencing a thrilling intimacy with the characters. And by using multiple POVs, readers are not limited in perspective, yet at the same time, there is an underlying suspense in the book. I find this to be brilliant writing!

Readers are going to fall in love with Bex, Lane and Sawyer. And if you're looking for a new book-boyfriend, you'll find two in this story!!!

My only regret when it comes to this book, is that I didn't start reading it sooner.

I helped the author in pre-reading and so skimmed the book's final version, reading the chapters for major changes over the course of a couple of hours to see how suggestions were taken, and was pleased at the direction several scenes went.

Overall, My Blood Runs Crimson is what I would describe as "a beginner thriller" for someone who is wanting to try out thrillers but isn't sure how they'll like them. None of the mysteries are too hard to solve if the reader has read many mysteries or is paying attention, but they are somewhat intriguing. We are reintroduced to the characters from the first book, Walking the Crimson Road, and new characters are brought in to keep things interesting and lively. An actual plausible love triangle that has the reader rooting for the other guy is introduced, something that is tricky to do.

Bex is still frustratingly uncurious for a journalism major, Lane is still annoyingly (almost disturbingly) manipulative, and Sawyer, well, I'll let you decide what you think about him.

The author could stand to cut a lot of fluff and filler and redundancies, and replace it with more descriptions. Less "telling" and more "showing." Instead of having the characters telling how they did something in three paragraphs, and three pages of girls decorating a room or a float or discussing things over and over, and instead spend those three pages describing the actions the characters did. It makes for a much more interesting novel.

I did appreciate how Bex "grew up" a bit from the previous novel. She definitely seemed more like an adult in this one, though her friends didn't quite seem to grow up with her. She took the lead in her relationship when needed, though she took the back seat seemingly 95% of the time and let Lane be in charge a lot.

Perhaps her having time away from Lane during her internship will give her time to think about their relationship and what she wants, since he'll still be in Alabama. Hopefully for this reader....it isn't him.

Trigger warnings of sexual violence for this book. It is also for a more mature crowd, though the adult scenes are relatively tame in nature and the profanity is light.

Bex has an editor position and an internship at The New Yorker all lined up. Lane is Bex's boyfriend and they are part of a secret society called Machine. Sawyer is also part of the society and he has been tasked with the job of protector of Bex. The big mystery is, protect her from what? Machine is being targeted and the core members will do anything to keep their society a secret. Some may even start to wonder if they are going too far. This is a fast-paced book that will keep you on your toes!
