Apparently, Tanjung and Japura are only there to set up the dragon return cameo in the next book. And that, I'm guessing is only to have an excuse to get them into a 5th book. But these two countries take up far too much of the book, leaving the main storyline to dangle for a while in chapters entitled, "Interlude (x)" each time. It's almost as if the author wrote the first book and then realized two book later that he needed some filler.

Too much is contrived in this and the 4th book. An assassin kills the unguarded army commander, who happens to be the empress' consort AND a prince. No guards? Middle of the enemy camp? Come on...

How about this: General Navarien is abandoning his Camorin campaign after losing 2/3 of his legion and never getting close to the city walls. In fact, he is encamped and under siege himself. So, as he's packing up, ready to leave, do the victorious Lost Ones wait for him to go? NO! They abandon their city to the defeated enemy. Come on...

Siege engines never seen in this world are suddenly designed by a Tindebraishan fella named Turner who shows up out of nowhere. He also figured out how to make catapults and trebuchet. But only for Darth Vader of the Evil Empire in the form of General Navarien. Come on...

Where earlier in the series sorcerers could not ward normal missiles, now they can ward magic AND arrows, but only the Evil Empire can do both apparently and the "good guys" never seem to figure out hey need to strike when the wards are dropped for javelins to be thrown from the enemy. Come on...

The. We have Shelim, who had a ward that absorbs energy and can be thrown back at the enemy. Only, when he does it, he's dumbfounded and doesn't follow up his ward-breaking attack, giving the Evil Empire time
To throw up a new ward. Bravo. Come on...

This is a fantasy book with a witch or female wizard in a world where women do not have the gift. Strong Heroine. I have enjoyed this series an would love to see the next book in the series.
