Amelia Wardman has graduated from nursing school and is ready to make her own way in life. She has never been gifted with any magical powers, at least not like her parents. Her father, Daryl, and mother, Clarisse, are gifted in ways she could never hope to measure up to. That was what drew her to nursing. She could help people in the only way she knew how. Her excitement for her new career has barely begun when suddenly her world is turned upside down. She is thrown through her family’s ancient magical portal to a world she has never seen before. Her father’s pleas echo in her mind as she faces challenges beyond her wildest nightmares. Will she be able to find help along her journey? And more importantly, is there any way to save her family in time?
I both liked and disliked this book. That said, I would recommend it to others.
The writing was a little awkward to start with. It felt a bit stop and go in the opening chapters. Once the story changes setting, it relaxes and flows more evenly. I felt some plot points moved a bit too quickly, but overall was pulled along nicely through the story.
I did not like the ending and the way it pushes off into book #2. I won't go into details because "spoilers," but I think the transition is poorly done. That said - I am looking forward to reading the next in the series.
I purchased the Kindle version and it suffers from some poor proofreading. Misspelled words, wrong words used (here instead of hear), and punctuation misplaced were some of the noted items. It was worse early in the book.
Though all I mention seems negative, the world the author paints is vivid and drew me in. I was immediately lost in the setting and was caring about the characters. I purchased the trilogy so I am ready to move on and see where things go from here.
