Bone Knight #4

A Lost God and A Hostile Land

Rate this book
Sometimes fate cuts deep, right to the bone.

It's time for Max to turn his attention toward his ultimate goal: freeing the dark god whose servant brought him to this world. With Raeg and Trina by his side, and a laundry list of powerful spells, he's finally starting to feel confident that together they can handle anything their enemies can throw at them... or is he?

All he has to do is get to Arinna, or so he's been told, and the rest will resolve itself. That's assuming he can even find her. As Max will soon learn, for the first time in more than a century, she's been moved. And that won't be the end of his troubles, not by a long shot. He's been noticed now, by bigger players on the board. Max will find he's less of a knight to them... and more of a pawn. To be taken with ease.

I am Tim Paulson, writer of fantasy and science fiction.

I'm currently writing the Bone knight litRPG series. It's fun to revisit the game worlds I enjoyed when I was young. I grew up with Final Fantasy, Mechwarrior, Dragon warrior (known to many as Dungeon Quest), and X-COM. These games, along with a whole lot of movies and books, have informed what I think is cool: Impossible odds and grave decisions with monumental stakes.

Bone knight book nine, the finale for the series, is currently underway. After that is complete, I have a new litRPG series already planned that should come out in time for Christmas 2022.

Also: Audiobooks are on the way and a Boneknight RPG game is currently in development.

If you've enjoyed my books, please leave a review.

Thank you!

-Tim

I Think This is Where I Stop

So, this series has been a very… not lackluster, but not thrilling journey for me. Average. It’s an average book with an average plot, and that’s been fine. But, it hit a cliche so hard that I immediately closed the book, and I don’t think I can come back.

Spoilers*****

**************

MC is is from our world and plays games and *DOESN’T READ THE MAGICAL CONTRACT OFFERED BY THE CREEPY CHARACTER WHO SHOWS UP OUT OF NOWHERE*… It’s so bad that even his pet is trying to warn him, and he’s just like: naw, sign without reading. It’s so cliche that it hurts. It’s rule number one in every game, movie, or book: read before you sign. Especially when handed to you by a shady magical character. It was so aggravating that I think that ends this otherwise decently enjoyable series.

If you’re going to make an isekai, reborn or transported to another world style story, either make the character clueless, or actually treat the characters as if they have some forethought, at least enough to READ A BINDING MAGICAL CONTRACT BEFORE SIGNING. I get it if he was Rand Al’ Thor or some village child who’s never heard of a lawyer before, but for someone brought from our world to just break the golden rule for absolutely no good reason? Annoying.

If I continue from here I will update my review if the book gets better. But for now, I’m done.

I liked this one. It is not my favorite though because there is less Rage and more Trina. I won't explain why since I don't want to spoil anything. There are some very cool elements added that make this story a little richer and fuller though. I loved the addition of Scruff. What a cute idea and I can't wait to see how Paulson develops this little guy more. Additionally I liked that we are finally learning about what is happening with Arinna. We have been waiting to hear about her since the beginning and are finally getting a taste into her fate. Wow, what a weird twisted situation there too. EEEE!

I also enjoyed learning about a new class since Max had to change mid story. I think that is such a cool touch and I hope Max ends up experiencing them all! Since I am a non-gamer, I don't really know what to expect with each class. It is a neat little mystery and always fun to see if Max loves or hates his new change and the abilities he gains with it.

Max is still a great lead character who is embracing his role as the ultimate hero of his entire gaming world. I do like that he is still kind of sour towards Trina. I don't totally like or trust her either dude! I am excited to see where we go next here.

not Litrpg (spoilers)

I love games and RPG games but the writer is just **** on every mechanism in RPG.

-how/why ‘d a God like power being is dominated by mortals (sealed ok but brain washed lol)
-when I revisit low lvl area in any MMO/RPG (JP or westerns) My Character always one shout every thing I see …. The moment I gain 5 lvl deference I slap around mini bosses.
Here a lvl 17 defeats lvl 40+ keep in mind that the MC has only been in this world for like 3 weeks while his enemies have been living in hostile environment since they were born.

I can’t take this BS anymore it’s just a money grab the books are too short and not thought out or has been written by a casual gamer who doesn’t understands game mechanics or RPG elements in RPG levels do matters you can just let a child go to wrestle-mania ring and become the champion

Brilliant Book, highly recommend it, despite it being a very thin book, more novella size.

As usual there is no gap and this takes off running from where the last book ended. An uneasy truce as Trina is allowed to join their party despite her betrayal at the end of book 3. However she retains an agender of her own and takes them to her own school, where Raeg dies and they are taken prisoner. The school is where the children of the rich and powerful are sent when they have dark tendencies to try and force them onto a light path. And their headmaster has a treasure trove of confiscated dark items, spells, and equipment that Max is able to liberate for his own use.

Now Max has increased in levels, he's seriously increased his damage output. So the fights get bigger and better. The story picks up pace, and the characters grow and shine. (hello spider children of the great author)

An irritating misstep

I read the first three books in this series and liked them well enough to buy this one. Sadly this one did not live up to the previous three. The plot is contrived, character motivations and actions make no sense, and a fan favourite character is shuffled out and the focus shifted to a far more annoying one. The story gets better in the second half, but not enough to make up for the abysmal first part. I'll probably get the next one in the series, but if I was basing that decision solely on this book I definitely wouldn't.

Book four!

Mistakes: I didn't find any in this book. I think the page counts for this series are misleading. This book only took me an hour to read.

Plot: Escape from a school and the torture of a goddess.

Characters: Trying out a new class.

A Great Addition

While there is a seriously sad moment in this story it was a great story. I am loving the adventure of Max the Boneknight. The character development is quality and it is easy to care about the characters and become involved in the story.
