At first the great house at Tansey Hill seemed the answer to young Cynthia Adams' prayers. Alone and friendless in the big city, Cynthia was in desperate need of a job when the master of the old mansion hired her to care for his isolated country estate in his absence.

But all too soon Cynthia found that the unearthly beauty of Tansey Hill masked gruesome secrets. The scent of strange herbs from the garden seemed to poison the night air . . . the little boy who lived at the house writhed in the grip of a mysterious and fearsome power . . . and two handsome men, one dar and the other fair, competed for Cynthia's trust and love as she realized that someone was trying to drive her from the house or destroy her.
