The darkness infecting mankind has been given a name, The Dread.
It’s been a year and a half since Taylor Hart and her companions fled Los Angeles, desperate to escape the infection unleashed by the drug Vanidrum, which causes bloodthirsty madness in its hosts. The survivors found refuge in a hidden Lazarus Pharmaceutical base in Alaska, codenamed The Ark, but it isn’t long before the grisly army of the infected finds them.
Now, Dread Lieutenants are appearing, men and women chosen by the darkness and given horrifying special abilities. As civilization continues to erode around them, their only hope is to reach The Vault, where the last known transmission from the outside world originated…
As they journey through wastelands and towns overrun by creatures of The Dread, Taylor’s power begins to evolve and she receives visions from a being who calls itself The Messenger. The visions hint that one of her companions holds a secret that could release the world from the horrors of the infection if Taylor can manage to keep her safe. When betrayal sells them into the hands of their enemies, Taylor must protect their only hope of salvation, or join dark evolution.

Taylor's powers against the dread are changing and she finds new allies in this second book. The author also gives us more information about what Dr Alan Price knew about the dread. The dread have also gone through changes with some having super powers. The fight to save humanity gets started in Book 2. Just like reality not all humans fight for the good side. The storyline is very unique and fascinating and hard to describe adequately in a summary. Very good series and I look forward to the next book as the fight to save humanity from the dread continues.
I enjoyed every part of book 2. Revisiting the drug cause apocalypse and the Dread was a real adventure. There are surprising twists, the loss of many and the saving of some. Humanity fights back at every opportunity. Taylor must find even greater strength as the Dread evolves. Riveting reading.
Although the story itself is starting off so well, there are a number of misspelled words, such as sent instead of scent. More importantly, there are too many echoes from the previous series: the super soldier who is chosen to be forced into the leadership role by the alien presence, the young daughter figure sidekick, etc.
No heroes or heroines, in a classic sense, yet a story full of heroic actions, big hearts, and transformation. This is not a simple apocalypse. Yañez creates a darkness and a violence that is thrilling, and, therefore, not an easy read. And the people are so real! There is always hope, almost always redemption. And Light.
This is a fast paced exciting, and nerve wracking continuation of this trilogy. Where good has to relearn how to work together to retake the losses that happened because of darkness.
I like the way in which the story has been written. Action is never far off from the pages. Jonathan Yanze has done a fantastic job in bringing alive excitement and great adventure. Bravo!
Hard to put down. Twist to twist you will stay engrossed in the edge of ruin. Be armed with snacks at your comfortable reading nook. You will not want to put this down.
The characters come off the page like real people. The story line is really different from the post apocalyptic books I have read to date. Some real surprises along the way.
