In King Arthur and The Consciousness Gene, Don Carroll's fourth novel, we find some of the most beloved characters from his earlier novels in The Consciousness Trilogy, including Rat, Manuelito, and Blaine. Through intense spiritual practices Blaine develops the ability to go back in time to observe events occurring centuries ago. She is persuaded by Mother Mary of the Sacred Order of the Sisters of Mary Magdala to return to King Arthur's time to seek evidence to confirm that in him a gene was expressed, which allows humans to develop a higher level of consciousness. Blaine finds herself in a race against time, and the CIA who are on their own quest to find the secret. Blaine arrives at the time of Arthur in the reflective consciousness of a young woman named Gwenynen. Arthur is in the midst of his many battles to protect Britian, is seriously wounded. Gwenynen travels with Arthur to the mythical island of Avalon-the very real Ynys Enlli, off the coast of Wales-and learns the Celtic prince is not only a warrior-king, but also a man of deep faith who uniquely blends Celtic and Roman Christianity.
Don Carroll is an author and spiritual director. His writing includes non-fiction, fiction, and contemplative works. These vastly different genres are connected by the underlying theme of the importance of accessing our spiritual nature in our human journey.
Don's epic, three-novel series, The Consciousness Trilogy, unfolds an exciting mystery in each volume. Hacking Toward Consciousness is about an individual spiritual journey. In The End of Democracy, the main theme is a country's spiritual journey to break out of a dualistic box, and The Armageddon Choice pertains to the spiritual journey of the planet.
In addition, Don is the author of A Lawyer's Guide to Healing, available through Hazelden and Amazon. The Connect interactive meditation journal, also by Don, is available through Amazon and www.PracticesofAwakening.com. The 9 and 12 Workbook, Renewing your Recovery, and Re-claiming your Life, Don’s other works, can be purchased on Amazon as well.
Did King Arthur possess a unique gene that allowed him to develop a higher level of consciousness than the average person? That is the question that Blaine and her present-day Navajo family become involved in as she travels through time and inhabits the reflective consciousness of a young woman who becomes an advisor to King Arthur. Don Carroll, the author of King Arthur and the Consciousness Gene brings ancient Britain to life as we are introduced to Arthur’s knights, experience his battles and travel to the mystical isle of Ynys Enlli. We are also caught up in the lives of Blaine’s family as they worry and wait for her return, knowing the CIA is on their trail. This novel blends spirituality, history, myth and adventure as the author explores the connection between Celtic and Roman Christianity. Carroll, a spiritual director himself, is at home in the language of higher consciousness, and he paints his characters with deep understanding. At one point, Blaine’s husband Manuelito, who is hiding out in a monastery, says: “Deception is the way the marginalized preserve truth; and seeing through our own deception is the way we find truth.” Carroll masterfully weaves an ambitious and heroic tale that leads us through King Arthur’s spiritual transformation and ultimately causes us to question how truth and deception work in our own lives.
I was intrigued by the concept that King Arthur may possess an original gene that had allowed him to have a high consciousness. Now whether or not he actually has that particular gene or not is something you with have to explore with Blaine and her family, as you all travel together to the past. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this story. I have always enjoyed the stories of King Arthur but this is a different twist on the old beloved stories we have all read about by bring a delightful union of mysticism, legend, and scholarship.
