High on a Hawaiian volcano, people mysteriously disappear. Fourteen year old Lexi spends summer vacation with her volcanologist father on Mauna Niuhi, an inactive volcano. Trying to make the best of the isolation and thin air, she sees a shark where no shark should be. Reaction to her warning is harsh and demoralizing. Until Lexi witnesses the impossible—a shark attack. The disappearance of a team member convinces the doubters. Cut off from civilization atop an alien landscape, Lexi battles loneliness and disbelief. Her mom, a network news anchor, rushes to report on this improbable story that has left the experts baffled and everyone in harm’s way. Will anyone believe Lexi that this is a SHARKANO? Can anyone survive?
Since my earliest memories, I enjoyed being scared. Staying up late watching scary B&W movies on late-night TV. Reading scary stories into the wee hours. The Earl King terrified me--and is one of the few childhood stories I remember to this day. Along the way, history fascinated me. Traditional history--kings and queens and wars and pirates--as well as spooky history. Roswell and ghosts, the princes in the Tower and other historical mysteries. I ate it all up. These stories are why I write. Some are still untold, while others have yet to be formed. I hope my stories frighten you, maybe enlighten you. Transport you. Make you stay up late, with a light on, reading...
I kind of expected this to be fun. It is, but it's quite a smart sci-fi too. I really enjoyed the characters, even though one annoyed me a little. I like sharks, I like volcanoes. I like books. I liked this.
Wow! What an exciting book to read and visualize. The descriptions and imagery were terrific. I can foresee a movie, circa the Jaws movies of my generation. Well done!
My Review: T.A. Bound does an amazing job with describing the setting-Hawaiian Island and volcano. The setting almost becomes another character as he uses research about volcanoes and a highly detailed description in his story-telling. The main characters, Burke, Jacqueline, and Lexi, move the story as well as offering dimension with their relatable qualities. The story in itself is well-written and action-packed. He does an excellent job painting a picture with words during the climatic scenes. I learned a great deal about volcanoes and sharks while being completely entertained. I thought of Jaws while reading the book as the words played a movie in my mind while reading. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves an adventure story. Sharkano does what all good sci-fi stories should do. It takes real science then adds to it and molds it into an interesting and convincing story. T.A. Bound seems to have a good grasp of facts. He introduced me to terms I wasn't aware of, such as “lava tubes” and utilized them to create frightening situations. I'm not a scientist, but I can google terms and I know when a novel's logic is believable. He has created a crazy, life threatening disaster within the pages of his book.
The characters in Bound's novel are realistic and fully developed. Lexi is a teenager whose parents have recently split up. Her mother, Jacqueline, a successful newscaster, has custody of Lexi, but as the story begins Lexi is on her way to Hawaii, to spend the summer with her father. Burke is leading a team of geologists who are studying a volcano on one of Hawaii's small, remote islands, so this won't be the sun, surf and sand vacation Lexi had hoped for. She is bright and self-assured, but has trouble getting people to believe her because she's young, which leads to more problems.
I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a well-written sci-fi/disaster story with lots of tension.
I enjoyed this book very much. Lexi is an interesting character. The story was exciting as sharks unexpected appear in a volcano of all things! I enjoyed the premise of the story. it reminded me a little of the movie jaws told from a teenage girls perspective! A fun and exciting tale.!
Great book for adults who love horror stories about killer sharks!
I liked reading this book so much, I read it twice! The second time I read it out loud to my twin, who also liked it a lot. One thing we both agreed on is that the topics in the story seem well researched. The writing is well done and it is easy to read. The characters were very likable. I like that the story is written easy enough for middle graders to read, but that it's still a great read for adults. Which brings me to one of my issues with this book: It's listed under the category for Middle Grade readers. But there's too much gore and death for this book to be suitable for pre-teens or even young adults. And there's a sexual part between two grown ups that isn't suitable for those ages either. It could be suitable for older teens, maybe 17 and older. There were a few typos and small grammatical errors that needed fixing. But with a bit of editing, this book could be perfect. Overall, I found this story to be highly entertaining. If you like horror stories or even movies based on sharks, you'll love reading this!
Better than the Sharknado movies combined. This book sounds more realistic and believable (well, until the end), but it's a thrilling, fun, and exciting read.
