Emma has made it big as a rock star but returns home when the man who raised her after her drug-addicted mother abandoned her, dies.

She’s not on the best of terms with Link, even though she’s been in love with him since she can remember. And after a very drunken night, they wake up in bed together. Emma thought things were finally falling into place, but she was so very wrong.

To say Link reacts badly is an understatement. These two are forced to carry out their dad’s wishes and take his ashes on a cross-country road trip forcing them into close quarters.

Emma is trying to let him go and move on, and Link is trying to grapple with his new found attraction to her.

In The Grey is the sixth standalone novel in the Shattered Cove contemporary romance series.

In The Grey (Shattered Cove Series, #6)
by A.M. Kusi

Grey to Black (dark) to LIGHT!
First and most important to me, this is my first e-book with no grammatical errors or misspelling. Kudos to your editors.
"In the Grey" was informative, inspirational and entertaining. Although, it is a tear-jerker it has laughter, romance, camaraderie, love, caring and music. The theme, mental disorders, cannot be discussed to0 much. Thank you authors. Most of us have a mental disorder whether we know about or not. This disorder lay dormant with "Emma" for five years and her father's death brought it to the surface again.
The themes of love that "Solomon" had for Emma and her mother was touching. The love finally expressed by "Linc" when he stated, " I will dance with you in the light, carry you in the darkness and love you in the grey". The love expressed by her BFF and the friends of "Shattered Cove"
Needless to say, this is the best writing I have read in a few years. After reading the edition, I purchased the entire series “Shattered Cove” I already own the series “Orchard Inn”

I love this whole series so much and In The Grey is no exception. Emma and Link's story is emotional and angsty, and in the end beautiful. Read the author's note at the end. It gave me a deeper appreciation for these characters and the very real thing some people deal with.

Following the death of their father, and a grief-induced hookup, Emma and Link must take his ashes via a road trip to California. Neither is thrilled to do it. Especially after their night together. Link feels guilt and shame. Emma rejected.

The loss of the man who raised her, leads Emma to battle her abandonment issues, depression, and the urge to self-harm. Being in the car with Link after his rejection will be hard enough but she does her best to endure and enjoy what time they spend together.

Link is battling his feelings for Emma. He loves her and wants to protect her but can't even imagine a relationship with the woman his father raised. And when he walks away from her denying his feelings Emma sinks deep into self-destruct mode.

This is one hot read. I plan to check out more books by this husband/wife writing duo. They sure know how to bring the heat. I never knew which wrote which parts. This is a sign of a great team.

In the beginning, I was not sure about this book. Let me explain. I don't usually like to read books about siblings that have a thing for each other. While, Emma and Link are not really siblings, I could not stop but think of them as such. However, that feeling did pass. There was nothing awkward about Emma and Link's relationship.

Besides the hot sex, this book did have a good storyline. That made it easy to read. Romance readers will want to check out this book.

Oh Emma and Link. These two characters grabbed ahold of my heart and never let go. The amount of emotion I felt throughout this novel was intense, and it seriously felt like everything was happening to me instead of reading a fictional characters story. The authors did a fantastic job hooking me in and not letting me off the hook until the last page.

Emma's story is heartwrenching and so bittersweet. I love the adoration she had with Soloman, but I could feel her unease of her purpose in life. She is going through some very heavy and deep reflections, and I just wanted to hold her many times in this book.

Link has so much guilt floating around, which causes him to do and say things he didn't mean. It was a bit frustrating, but I myself don't let peer pressure dictate my life, so it's difficult seeing others let that happen. I'm glad he has close friends who can help him see the light.

I'm so happy I got the chance to read this novel and continue this wonderful series! I am now an avid reader of A.M. Kusi and I cannot express how excited I am for the next book in the series!

Every since I have discovered these authors, I haven’t looked back but anxious to get more from this series. A solid page turner that made me feel so much. A 6 star story.

On the surface it looks like Emma has it all, fame, power and confidence. But underneath she’s struggling each and every day. She has been in love most of her life with the only person she shouldn’t be, Link. Link has had some inappropriate thoughts of the only person he shouldn’t have them for. But love is love. And they need it in order to complete each other. But now they must make peace with their demons.

I loved everything about this story. It has an hint for the forbidden but not the inappropriate kind. It does have a sensitive subject related to mental health.

It was an unique story with an addicting storyline that had me reading non stop for hours on out. It’s an heartbreaking story as well an heartwarming one. I felt so much for these perfectly created characters. They made me want to hug them. Beautifully written with a seamless plot. It was highly entertaining. Bottomline this is a must read.

Standalone told in the third person. It does come with an amazing HEA. I strongly recommend this story.

Into the Grey is an amazing, pivotal, and relevant book. The authors have been able to create a character that is so incredibly real, vulnerable, and relatable. You can feel the person behind the "pen". There is so much that Link and Emma go through separately and together. Emma as such a raw and powerful woman and Link pushes her and compliments her in such an amazing way. Get cozy, grab a cup of something yummy, and be prepared to feel all the feels!

More than a love story

At this point just know every book in this series is going to be 5 stars for me.

Link and Emma have just lost their father. That emotional turmoil alone is enough to have them reaching for comfort. When they grab hold of each other to help dampen their grief, feelings they've kept from exploring can't go ignored anymore.

While this is a love story and about grief over a loss parent there's so much more going on. Emma has played a side character in multiple books in the series. She's always seen as the sex loving, always smiling, big personality girlfriend of the group. In this book you finally get to see what she's hiding behind that smile. You learn the heights she's gone to hid all her pain and handle it privately.

I felt seen in this story. I felt like Emma and I shared this secret of trying to find "the crack to let the light in". Emma's struggles with self harm something I'm very familiar with. It's something I've battled since 13 years old and now I'm 31. It's an addiction that can go unseen by the world and labeled as a way to get attention. Emma shows the reader how her self harm is an attempt to have some control over the emotions locked deep inside. She shows you the strength it takes to continue each day as if eternal sleep isn't yearned for. The feelings of not wanting to die, but willing to do anything to make the pain go away.

This book is emotionally hard. It's a story that is more than just a romance. While I loved watching Link and Emma's romance unfold, I wanted to reach in and hug Emma more than anything. I wanted to let her know I saw her. I needed her.

I can't express my gratitude for finally having a character who truly understood my struggles. How thankful I am for the letter from Ash (A. Kusi) at the end. This book made me feel seen, heard, and reminded me there's a group of people out there fighting the same battle as me.

On a steamier note this book was SEXY. I think given the struggles Emma had it was fitting that she is such a sexual character. All the steamy scenes were top notch. Each book gets a little hotter than the last. Can't wait to read Mason and Pippa's story.

*self harm, suicide, parental loss, mild S & M, explicit steamy scenes

*I received an arc of this book from the authors in exchange for an honest review.*

I honestly didn’t know I could fall in love with this series anymore than I originally fell but Link and Emma’s story changed it all! This book has everything I craved for in a romance book. One room only available? GOT IT. One Bed Trope? GOT IT. Kissing significant others scars? HELL YEAH IT GOT IT. The smut in this book is TOP TIER ;) I beg you to read this book once it comes out bc oh my will you wanna read the rest of the books in this series!

On a serious note, this book deals with topics of depression, self harm, isolating oneself very well and I’m very satisfied with the way it was handled so hats of to Ash and Marcus for that.

The moment I started reading this book is the moment I knew I was in for the ride of a lifetime as the death of their "father" leads to an unforgettable night for a compelling pair, a night of giving into temptation followed by an uncomfortable road trip that opens up painful wounds. For Emma and Link, this is a tale full of angst as the author deals with mental health in vivid detail. But it's also a heartwarming tale of acceptance and love that pulled at my heartstrings.

As a rockstar Emma seems to have it all, but beneath the glitz and glam surface is a woman struggling with self-worth. Courtesy of a childhood seeped in abandonment Emma's always felt unworthy of love and that she's destined to be alone. These feelings are compounded by a mental illness that becomes blatantly obvious as the story progresses. Emma's a heartbreaking character with a past that broke my heart and a vividly depicted mental illness that involved self-harm, depression, and even more self-destructive behavior fueled by Link's rejection of her after their night together. Their road trip together led to some emotional talks along with a time of closeness that Emma relished, a time that showed her vulnerabilities that had me wanting to hug her.

Link seems to be her opposite as a man who shows himself capable and self-sufficient. He's riddled with guilt though over his long-term attraction to Emma, an attraction he gave into during a moment of grief and that has him ultimately rejecting Emma in an act that frustrated me. During their road trip he was at war with himself over perceived obligations to his father as well as what he himself wanted. Add in her mental health issues, and his concerns over if he can truly have a relationship with her, and it all makes for a story full of angst. Throughout the story Link was a man slow to let others in and I was grateful for his friends in Shattered Cove who pushed him to listen to his heart when it came to Emma. He eventually showed himself to be a real hero, a supportive and protective man, in words and deeds that warmed my heart.

Though this is the sixth installment in the Shattered Cove series it stands strongly on its own in its dealings with mental health. It's a tale full of angst, a story that doesn't pull any punches when it comes to depicting the depression and self-harming aspects of mental illness. It's a romance that's sweet and scorching at times, a romance that pulls at my heartstrings while ultimately making for a richly rewarding romance. This was my first time reading A.M. Kusi but it definitely won't be my last as this was a powerful romance with a compelling main couple who I'm still thinking of!

Emma Sterling, rock goddess and lead singer of The Sirens, lives under a grey fog. She feels unrequited and unlovable. Her mother was a drug addict who would hook up with boyfriends who were not kind to Emma, until Solomon Owusu. For the first time, Emma felt the love of a father and she blossomed. Link is Solomon’s son and he was like her older brother. She adored him and followed him around. Then her mother abandoned her, left her with Solomon and she felt the first sting in her soul.

When her love for Link changed, he rejected her and kept a distance. Eventually she left to form her band and pursue her music. Solomon was her base, always there, supporting her. Then he died, and she was left bereft and alone. In their despair, Link and Emma have sex, and next day Link is horrified. He wants to forget it happened, but for Emma it was the culmination of a dream. More stings to her soul!

Forced on a road trip to scatter their father’s ashes in the west coast, the trip is partly torture, partly temptation, and more rejection for Emma. She’s going into a downward spiral and poor Link has no idea of all the storms that are battling inside Emma’s heart and soul.

The feeling of this story is somber and grey. Emma is battling her demons and what is worse, she doesn’t share even with her besties, so all the hurts fester and grow. She was truly in a destructive path and I was desperate to see she got the help she needed. Link has his own demons, so he’s oblivious to her hurt. It’s incredible that this couple love each other so deeply, but don’t get together because idiot Link worries about what others will think.

The pace is slow and deliberate, in tone with the introspective style of the authors. I love that this couple is bi-racial but seems colors are transparent because you never see a mention about their differences in race, more like you see total acceptance and inclusion. There were moments when all the sadness weighted on me, but the story and the characters are lovely and there was a glimmer of light in the distance. Also, their love was just too strong and it deserved to be cherished and acknowledged. Another fantastic angsty story that includes mental illness and acceptance.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

As Emma reels from Links rejection, she falls seller into the dark urges compelling her towards self-destruction. And as Link does his best to help the damaged musician process her emotional trials, he fights to resist his own need to wrap her in arms forever.

3.5*
The definition of the word is grey, is dark, overcast, and cloudy. In the Grey has many of those moments in Emma and Link's story. This story does deal with some super sensitive themes so be prepared, it isn't a book for the faint-hearted. Emma is the ultimate rockstar, in every way but deep down is she a woman lost and frightened, and when she losses the one man who was the only father figure she had ever know, Emma is on the brink of spiraling completely out of control. Link is her sort of stepbrother, the one person she wants but can't have. Link is struggling with the loss of his dad and the emotions for Emma that are finally breaking free, but their road to happiness has to be one of the hardest I have read.

I did enjoy In The Grey and look forward to reading more from this author, the reason for my 3* rating is because I struggled in places with everything that was going, A.M Kusi has jammed a lot of different elements into Emma's personality that I lost myself a tiny bit on occasions.

Not Sure About These Two Crazy Kids...

Back in Shattered Cove, we meet up with Emma and Link. Siblings in name only, not by blood. Link's father was one of those good guys and took Emma in after her mother abandoned her. Emma's always had a thing for Link, however not until now did he realize he had a thing for her. His sister.

Link and Emma embark on a road trip dictated by thier father's last wishes. They "slipped up" while drunk and grieving, something Emma doesn't regret and that Link can't wrap his head around. His sister. Emma is a Rockstar with what felt to me, a lot of emotional problems. She was a little girl lost, looking for love. Link was a good guy, however I wasn't a fan of this coupling and didn't feel the had much chemistry. The back and forth was boring as compared to angsty.

The book is well written and the storyline cute, however it didn't work for me. Emma and Link shouldn't have crossed that line as the whole romance was forced and really didn't make much sense.

HOLY HELL! In the Grey is certainly an emotional read that tried to do me in. It's the story of Emma, a rock star who loses a man who raised her as a father after her mother headed for the drug- filled hills, but now that man has passed away. Things take a complicated turn when she wakes up after spending the night with Link (his son) because they were drunk, and now they have to take his ashes together to California as his last wish so you can only imagine that neither are very happy about it. See, their "relationship" is not the greatest so how in the hell will these two be able to be in the same car for this big & important road trip with the new feelings overtaking them after that night?! In the Grey dealt with some pretty important topics which made it even more realistic & since I don't want to give more away, I can't tell what those topics are, but be prepared as the angst for days really starts hitting, as it actually had my eyes going rogue a time or two. This series is a beautiful series with all the feels so don't miss out on it! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I need a blanket and a hug after finishing In the Grey. This return to Shattered Cove was unlike the others in the series. Talk about emotionally intense. From the very beginning I knew I was going to be put through the wringer and I wasn't wrong.

My heart ached for Emma and Link. For their loss. The guilt they harbored. Their shared pain. The pain they held silently in their hearts.

When they were living out Sol's last wish, things took an unexpectedly sexy turn. Holy smoke show! These two were dynamite together. I loved that they were unafraid to express themselves the way they did. Too bad they couldn't be that honest when the clothes were on...

My stomach churned and I found myself rubbing my chest the final quarter of the book. I won't lie, things took a dark-ish turn I wasn't expecting. But A.M. Kusi handled it with the patience and care it deserved. Emma and Link's emotional and angsty roller coaster of highs and lows kept me on edge all the way through. And that ending!!! It was so wonderfully them and left me with a swoony smile on my face.

It can never be said enough, the authors always strike the right cord when taking on tough subjects. This is another emotional ride with Emma and Link. On the outside Emma is the loving life rock star, happy and carefree. She has always hidden her emotions: feelings of not being good enough and abandonment. Her answer was self harm. We see Emma struggle to come to terms with the death of her father and her feelings for her stepbrother, Link. She gets one night and then another rejection. It is a lot physically and emotionally.
Link has his own issues. the death of his father hits him hard. His night with Emma fills him with guilt. She is his stepsister. He is supposed to protect her. He tries to keep his feelings down but a ride trip across the country will make that near impossible.
As always we get more than a simple romance. You get a real story full of real situations and emotions!

Devoured this book in about 4-5 hours!! I had loved Solomon when I was first introduced to him in boom 5, it broke my heart to see that he was killed off but his death provided one hell of a story. Emma and Links story hit very close to home in the mental health aspect for me and I was so glad to see it written out so well. I have someone very close to me who has depression and it helped me see their side a lot more.

Emma is a hellion, sassy, assertive, funny, and just a talented badass. Link is a little uptight, but he knows how to let loose when you get some drinks into him. I thought the twos dynamic was unique, they called the same man “father” yet had these forbidden feelings for one another. That’s why I liked Solomon, he was so selfless and just decent for taking in a child that wasn’t his. The fact he didn’t legally adopt Emma for the sake of his son’s first and true love as well as his status in their family was just 🥺🤎 I loved it all so much!!

Emma is a famous rockstar with a emotional past. Emma has many emotional secrets and she doesn’t handle her hurt well. Link is a mechanic running his own shop. Links father took on the responsibility of raising Emma as a little girl but never officially adopted her. When these two are forced to do a road trip together many feelings are brought to light. Can these two confront their past emotions to move on to a healthy future. This was an amazing emotional journey that I was Not expecting but I truly Enjoyed. Emma and Link had many of the same obstacles to face but in different ways. There was many different layers to this story that made this story so entertaining and satisfying to read. I look Forward to reading more books by this author.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for angsty romance novels. And while I do think that the miscommunication trope should be a thing of the past (because come on, in the social media age we should all be pretty aware that a relationship works best if people communicate. But maybe that’s just me. Maybe I’m just impatient and always need to talk things out before I make wrongful assumptions), sometimes it works really well for a romance novel though. I can’t say whether it worked here, but it worked for me. I just wanted to cry a little, and I did.
Trigger warning though: there’s some serious self harming involved so maybe if that triggers you you shouldn’t read this book.
But I liked the writing style and I liked the book for what it was (and what it was supposed to make me feel).

In The Grey takes a look within, into a vulnerable journey of self-worth and finding value and your place in the world. Emma's struggles to stay in the light and let her light shine bright from within. Link and Emma go on the road to fulfill a Father's last wish together, they are forced to deal with the past. Link is strong and self-sufficient, on a journey to discover how to let others in. I enjoyed this story so much and felt a personal connection to Emma.

Ash & Marcus did an amazing on this very difficult topic in this book. This book is heartbreaking, gut-wrenching & fantastic all at the same time. Loved this book! Just read the series! 🤩

Emma & Link have loved each other for years but never took the chance on each other until Link’s father died. They took that moment & went for it.

Shattered cove makes you feel all the emotions AM Kusie writes, In The Grey was no different and had me hooked within the first chapters. Emma’s story was painful to read and I just wanted to reach into the pages and give her a big hug; because she kept most of her pain to herself, her support system was minimal. Emma and Link dealt with so many emotions in such a short amount of time, grief, guilt, passion, wrongfulness and it took a long journey to get them to their HEA. In The Grey was such an a patio all roller coaster and I loved every minute of it

Heart

This book had and still has me in knots. There was death, heartache and so much pain I did not know what was going to happen next. I am so happy that Emma was able to seek the help she needed and have the love she always wanted with Link. And I am in awe of how it doesn’t make a difference in the book about the color of their skin. Just love.

Excellent book. Extremely well written. This was my first book by this author duo and I can honestly say I stepped out of my comfort zone with this one. It was a bit on the darker side than I normally read but gripped me none the less. It was an emotional rollercoaster for me with a happy ending. Beautifully written where the pages just flowed. The chemistry was intense and the emotion of the characters poured out of the book. Looking forward to their next release.
