I received this as an ARC, thank you to the author and Book Sirens. This is my honest opinion.

This was such a sweet and accessible introduction to chess! My son was so excited when we started reading this together, and even more so when it was time to play. The tone of the book is friendly and engaging, especially with Pawnie guiding the way, and I really appreciated how it built on each concept gradually without overwhelming a young learner.

The interactive “What would you do?” questions at the end of each section were a great touch, fun and effective for retention. It’s very clear that the author understands how to communicate with kids in a way that holds their attention, builds their confidence, and keeps them excited.

Whether you're a total beginner or just looking to share the game with your kids, this book is a lovely little tool for learning together. Definitely recommend for anyone looking to make chess fun and accessible for younger learners!

This was just a delightful book, and once I start playing chess again, I'll give it a quick review. I really needed a simple explanation - not one of those complex books - this filled the bill.

Absolutely loved the book. I liked how the author seemed to understand that kids entering into playing chess would need rudimentary information to wrap their heads around the game. The book is so insightful and friendly toward the novice to the game. I like the straightforward approach and demystifying of chess for those new to the game. Chess is complicated. Yet, here, it is a simple and practical approach to the entire game, starting with the board and moving to the various pieces and ending with the lofty ideas of defenses, gambits and check and checkmates. I particularly enjoyed that there were word searches available initially for those that might need a break. I also enjoyed the What Would You Do? section after each element was discussed. The book is not intimidating by any stretch of the imagination and though it is aimed at children new to chess I would recommend it to anyone interested in understanding chess, at a basic level. You won't become a grandmaster with this book but you won't be intimidated by the idea of chess either after reading it. Highly recommended.
