Zero to Million: Building Our First Growth Engine

I got my last salary 7 years ago in April 2014. Yes, that's when I started up. Most of the people in India know that - Swiggy started in 2014 and is now worth $3.9 bn Postman started in 2014 and is now worth $2 bn Razorpay started in 2014 and is now worth $1 bn However, most of them may not know that - Tinyowl started in 2014, raised $27.8 mn, shut down in 2016. Taskbob started in 2014, raised $5.7 mn, shut down in 2016. Doodhwala started in 2014, raised $2.2 mn, shut down in 2019. You know what - It took me less than a minute to find details about the billion-dollar startups. But, took an hour to find details about startups that shut down. Contrasting with the fact that - < 1 percent of the startups started in 2014 have become unicorns > 90% of the startups have shut down. Main reason - People write success stories because people like reading success stories. However, you can learn a lot from the mistakes and failures of startups. Last year I started giving away my learnings via posts and blogs. People loved them and that's when I decided to write this book. I have written everything about our startup journey - wrong decisions, mistakes, failures, right decisions, success & more. Please do read it. It will be worth your time and money.

Zero to Million by Venkatesh Rao is a way good book for people involved into tech startups. Since I already worked in a UX Design company, I could grasp much of the content of the book, as I know how an app or website works and what brings users and business to them.

This is a short book of around 94 pages on Kindle. The book is divided into three invisible parts. First is author's introduction, second part is about their flagship product AppBrowzer which I have downloaded, and the third part is like case studies or white papers or peeping into business models and tips that can help business to grow and scale up.

The book features story of two: one is Venkatesh, and secondly his product AppBrowzer, a super app. As I got into the story, I am happy that I learnt two best things from the book. One is Product-Market Fit concept, and the second one is Habit Forming Product. He also shed light on problem space and solution space. To understand each concept or hack, there are numerous examples with screenshots. Though the book is heavy in between, but for ambitious people it doesn’t matter.

Overall, a wonderful book with a lot of insights and startup mechanism. In all its essence, the focus of the book is great, and it intends to help millions of new entrepreneurs. Reading this book means saving time and money to develop something good as a startup guy. I liked the book, and happy to get good amount of knowledge regarding product growth.
