How to Take Your Novel from Manuscript to Marketplace is a helpful resource for any aspiring writer who requires direction with the self-publishing route. It takes the manuscript from the final editing to the publishing of the novel in the available markets. There are many tips that I thought were helpful and will be rereading this book again in the future when if I ever do finish my manuscript. :)

This book contained several aspects to the end of your writing journey. The author was very thorough in detailing what comes after you write the end. The chart was a little strange, however the information included in this book was excellent.

Not Quite What I Thought, But Solid Information

This book’s title does not feel quite accurate, as I thought it would cover at least a little information about the end stages of writing or at least some editing. But it literally starts with you already having a finished, ready-to-publish book manuscript. The book is broadly divided into four sections, including the interior, the exterior, the author platform, and the upload. The first section has to do with things like the actual formatting of the book and front and back matter. The section about the exterior, of course, touches on the cover and blurb. The author platform is perhaps the most involved section, with subsections about your author website, social media platforms, and mailing list. The uploading section details how you actually get your book online. The author certainly has some solid information that would help both complete self-publishing newbies and those who have a few books under their belts. The author provides a nice resource section at the back with links to helpful websites. She even has a glossary at the end; throughout the book, he has linked key publishing terms and jargon to this glossary. I did think that he overly relied on this glossary, as it would be easier for the reader to have at least some of these terms explained inline in the main part of the book. I thought, in particular, that the introduction was overladen with publishing jargon. A true self-publishing newbie may have never heard of things like alpha and beta readers, let alone used them to help refine their book. I was disappointed the author didn't even mention in this section that the book should be professionally copyedited and/or proofread. He just gives the word “edits” a quick mention, not referring to whether these are self-edits or ones by a professional. All in all, this book has pluses and minuses, but the details the author shares would certainly be helpful for anyone relatively new to self-publishing.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

This book is full of useful step by step information. Nothing in it was new to me, but I really could have used something like this back when I was gearing up to publish my first book. Some of the information is only relevant if you live in Australia, but most of it is universal.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review, but my opinions are my own.
