This book promises to give you an approach for achieving a high skill level in whatever endeavor you care to imagine. I found it very interesting and helpful from that perspective, as well as a pleasure to read.
It is written in an engaging and upbeat style, with good humor popping up in unexpected places, ensuring that the topic of improving skills doesn't get bogged down in academic jargon. That's not to say there isn't a lot of research in behavioral science involved. That is well-documented in the footnotes if you care to dig further. But the focus of the book isn't on learning about the theory of neuro-linguistic programming, or NLP, per se.
Instead, this book delivers a well-formed and highly accessible approach on how to use NLP to achieve what you want. It has relevant examples of different situations where David's method for NLP is useful, with breaks built in encouraging you to practice what's been preached. This helps to internalize the ideas, further promoting a good understanding of the methods and models described.
Not being familiar with NLP, I came away with some good ideas for using David's approach in several areas where I'm currently trying to gain momentum. I'm typically skeptical of "self-help" books, but I strongly recommend this one if you want help in achieving your goals.
I don't write reviews, but this….I had to. I was spinning my wheels, going nowhere fast. Struggling to figure out why I'd seemingly stalled on my career path. I knew I had the talent and the drive, but I couldn't see where I needed to improve. I was doing everything I thought I was supposed to and kept getting passed by. I was desperate. Enter this book. I didn't know NLP from ESP. Actually, I still don't. I didn't need to, but this book made is easier to open my eyes and take a good hard look at what I needed to do, what I needed to understand to really 'see' myself and what direction I needed to focus on. Step-by-step, right down to the heart of the issue. No, it doesn't tell you what the answer is or how to solve it. No book can, nobody can. It's all on you. Every big problem is actually a bunch of little ones in a big, messy ball. Slowly pulling it all apart, you will learn to look at yourself differently and look at how you integrate all the small lessons and techniques into your own real life. I got my promotion in the end, and I told everyone what I'd read to help me. This can help you in everything else you do too - you can't ever 'un-see' it, because now you know.
An interesting and thoroughly detailed "formula" for mastering any skill, this book offers readers a new way to approach learning in what the author touts as extremely efficient and effective (though I have yet to give it a try, myself). Rather than attempting to achieve a new skill in a haphazard manner, author David Wray lays out a clear and intentional path to success, utilizing expert interviews, specific and trackable goals, as well as creating a model to replicate the skill, leveraging motivation, surrounding yourself with a support system, as well as how to critique and fine-tune your plan. A fascinating book for those who love to learn, or need a more effective method to learn a complicated skill.
