I was thinking about taking a trip to Scotland one day but your book has inspired me to go now! I felt like I was walking along side of you. Thank you for a well written and entertaining journal of your travels.
The biggest appeal to the “How to Have an Adventure” series is the way Coronelli eases your imagination into the places he visits. It’s not a series of lists or price guides it’s a collection of moments and memories rendered through thoughtful and genuine prose. These straddle a line, I think, between what you expect from a book on a location to be and what kind of stories might unfold there. Each moment feels as if the author is telling you about it himself and with that kind of personal touch you feel each leg of the journey. I found myself actually vicariously caught up in the excitement the day before his friend’s wedding and the almost ethereal quality to his wandering the Scottish highlands. Coronelli experiments more here than in the previous volume and bits of his experience with prose writing emerge as fascinating glimpses into sea monsters, historical battles, and even a cat which may or may not run an airbnb. I think these books are absolutely perfect if one wants and idea of what travel is LIKE more than a series of top ten lists and rankings. The text conveys the atmosphere of people, places and time more intimately than most guides could ever hope to. Here’s to another wonderful entry in this series and hopes for another volume once the world has begun to right itself a little more.
At first glance I didn't think this was the kind of tour book I had hoped for when I ordered it. However, my husband picked it up and read it over two days and told me it was great. As it turned out, we visited Scotland first, and then I read the book upon our return - I guess I wanted to see if I had missed anything. Raffael Coronelli is an American based in Chicago, who writes about his experiences traveling the world, from the perspective of someone trying to get the most from a week's vacation. He doesn't attempt to cover every aspect of an entire country - he hits the highlights and talks about visits to pubs, the people he meets, tour guide experiences, etc.
This is a fabulous book full of interesting insights about exploring Scotland. I felt like I learned more than I would have with a more traditional travel guide because it included the author's thoughts and opinions. I greatly value the suggestions and being informed of his opinions about various experiences.
A fun read before a trip to Scotland. We don't plan to be in the same places as the author except Glasgow and Inverness, but I did take some notes on those. Nicely casual
Excellent book. I would love to travel to Scotland. Raffael makes you feel like you are there. Very informative and spot on about travel. Highly recommend this author’s books.
