Flex Time: A Working Mother's Guide to Balancing Career and Family

Rate this book
Trying to strike the right balance between career and motherhood is one of the most stressful, heart-wrenching issues facing women today. Torn between the need to nurture and the need to work, women yearn for a way to have the best of both worlds. In Flex Time, author Jacqueline Foley shows mothers that they can get the life they want by changing the way they work. In direct and engaging language, Foley shows readers how to create a personal vision of work/family balance, figure out the flexible work schedule that best suits them, prepare a compelling proposal for flexible work to pitch to their boss, and much more. Based on in-depth interviews with more than 100 women across North America, Flex Time is the first such comprehensive guide that offers women everywhere much-needed relief from the hectic, unbalanced pace of trying to juggle full-time work with raising children.

This excellent, step-by-step guide will help working mothers determine their goals, create plans, and translate them into reality as they shift from full-time to part- or flextime work. Foley's personal experiences (she's a writer and flextimer) and those of interviewees provide simple, useful tactics for anyone looking to balance family and work, e.g., bond to positive memories of being with your child and draw on them for strength during stressful times. Similarly, offering to be "accessible all the time" when pitching a reduced-hours plan defeats the purpose of focused, continuous time with your precious child. With reasonable advice for mothers (and fathers) considering this type of change, Flex Time will complement Linda Mason's The Working Mother's Guide to Life: Strategies, Secrets, and Solutions and is recommended.
