*Audiobook Review*

I haven't had much experience with books that deal in alternate accounts of history, but after listening to this I'm definitely going to look for more of this genre! While the present-day world unpicks and dissects the latest scandal surrounding the British royal family, it felt so good to be able to immerse myself in the fictional though completely plausible sounding world of what if.

What if Diana hadn't died? What if she had gone on to marry Dodi, finding happiness in a second union, and with time putting into motion a course of events that would fundamentally alter the system that has held England in its place for so many centuries?

What if we lived in a world that was more like this one? More colourful and inclusive in parts, accepting as a reality and norm the technological advances that come with futuristic settings, while never failing to remind us that will always be those who will object and plot in darkness when confronted with any kind of change from the status quo. All of these things are explored with attention to detail where research is clearly evident, with subtle-ish tongue-in-cheek pokes at establishments like monarchical reign without thought of retiring that many question to this day.

In the end, you are left with a not-unrealistic sounding story that very well *might* have happened had Diana not died. Lastly, but by no means least, the narration was excellent. Craig's solid, clear, measured tones keep the listener engaged as the story swings from character to character and between various settings. All of these changes are conveyed well and with the apparent ease that belies the hard work that goes into such endeavours.

Altogether a very good book that I would heartily recommend to those who seek a little lightness, a little other-ness from the current day drama and strife of the royal family. This 5 star listen will not disappoint!

In The Muslim Prince, Roger Ley takes us into a new world where Princess Diana doesn't die in a car accident and goes on to marry Dodi Fayed. Her son, William, marries Isabella and their first born child is a son named, James. He is adored by his step-father, Dodi but, more than that, in the eyes of Dodi's father, he is viewed as a way to help the House of Saud inch its way into power in the House of Windsor. One day, James will rule as king when his father abdicates at 70, and they hatch a plan to arrange a marriage. Princess Malika is first introduced to James when they are children and a close friendship develops naturally. By their teens, their feelings begin to change and, in no time, they are a couple. But the British leadership isn't too keen on their future king marrying a Saudi Princess and they do everything possible to spy on them, including using new drones, fly on the wall drones. This is a humorous, yet deadly serious type of weapon and Mary is the best drone captain ever! She has a good heart and worries about the safety of James and Malika, even when the entire British hierarchy is trying to keep them apart. Prince James is scholarly and thoughtful which brings him to convert to Islam. If Malika and James marry, he will become the first Muslim Prince of England. The British leaders still can't accept a Muslim Princess, soon to be queen consort, and they devise a plan to eliminate the problem. A bittersweet ending that had me wanting to change a few things to alter the reality one more time! The narration was impeccably done by Craig Bowles who gave life to each of the characters in a dynamic and unique voice. His British accent is perfect!

Ropey title, really good read

A well constructed and researched book which imagines the succession issues for the Royal Family in an alternative near future. Expect political plotting and intrigue, cultural insights and dark humour. Well developed and identifiable characters on all sides. Action a little bit unevenly paced, with some gaps, but the book draws to a strong finish, with an absorbing and unexpected conclusion.

Interesting

The book was a bit of a head shaker. Then again I guess that was the point. It is always interesting to see the thoughts of others when it comes to the what if’s. Over all the book was thought provoking bringing out ones own what if’s. Ahhh the joy of leaving life’s true realities for a bit.

What would have happened to William and Harry if Diana had not died? What would happen to their children? This is a alternate reality book that takes the reader through a period where Diana doesn't die but becomes Muslim, and is reinstated back into the royal family as a queen mother when Elizabeth dies. Even though it is set in a period with Diana it is more about the grandchild's rise to king hood and who is he going to marry.
This is a wonderful novella, well thought out and planned. I love the turns it takes and all the back stage type agreements that is part of the British monarchy culture. The voice actor Craig Bowles makes the audio wonderful, and transports you to their world or reality. His voices for the different characters are simply lovely. So whether you get the book or audio I think you are really going to like this book.

I listened to this book after listening to the first one in the series (they don't follow but are interlinked), it added to the background of the story and I was so intrigued to get more information which enhanced my understanding of the first book.

I could potentially understand how this could have happened remembering the hysteria when Diana died.

My only criticism, and this is selfish, is I wanted more of the story - I didn't want it to stop.

Can't forget to mention that the narrator just added an extra layer to the story.
I am following both author and narrator now.
I was given a free copy by the author in exchange for an honest review which I have done.

I liked this unusual “what if” story.
At first you think the dream scenario...Diana lives..... but things don’t always turn out the way you imagine.
I am glad that I was advised to listen to” Chronoscape “ first, although I enjoy this one more , the plot made more sense having listened to it.

Anyone familiar with Roger Ley's epic time travel adventure Chronoscape will know that there was a timeline in that book where Princess Diana avoided certain death in a Paris tunnel and went on to cause ructions within the house of Windsor by marrying Dodi Fayed.

In this story, Roger Ley fills out this part of the original book in a spin-off adventure that gives all the details we need to understand quite how these 'ructions' played out to bring Britain to the brink of becoming something rather different than the place we know so well today.

I don't really want to go too much into the ins and outs of how this one unfurls, because it's so entertaining that you really need to get yourself a copy to read, or listen to the dulcet tones of Mr Craig Bowles with the audio book, to experience it first-hand, but I am not giving too much away when I say that a Lady Diana who converts to the Muslim faith has quite an effect on the Royal family, especially the younger members - and it's not so far beyond the realms of possibility to have been something that could have happened, had Diana's fate been different.

This throws up a whole raft themes around racism, religious tolerance, church vs state, the establishment and political intrigue, and I guarantee it will give you lots to speculate about. There are even some hilarious moments, such as when Diana gets her revenge on some former members of the Royal family who triumphed over her in the past, that had me laughing out loud.

It was rather like meeting up with an old friend hearing the voice talents of Craig Bowles again, and I easily fell back into the style and rhythm of his narration after having listened to Chronoscape previously. Talking of which, The Muslim Prince can and does essentially work as a standalone, but it is oh so much better if you know the full story before embarking on this second book, so I recommend you read or listen to Chronoscape first - and honestly, it's mind-bendingly good, so why wouldn't you?

For me, the second book that I read from a new (to me) author is the real test of how their writing 'sits' with me. A few days ago, I read 'Chronoscape' by Roger Ley (review is up here and on Amazon) ... and boy, did I thoroughly enjoy it, I could wax lyrical but this is about 'The Muslim Prince', a 'loose' sequel (sequel because there are crossover 'devices' and characters), which was the real test.

It is sometimes very difficult to put across a sincerity of emotion, enjoyment, appreciation or description for something as so many words are overused, like describing a funny cat video as 'awesome', the word loses its legitimate impact when used in the context of something that really could be described as such. So, I won't get all flowery and expansive in that regards, rather, state quite categorically that I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Muslim Prince', the structure of the story meant that it flows easily, the crossover devices are used in such a way as to either expand on some tech idea and appreciate its potential or a character that is expanded and developed. I believe that Roger Ley has an absolute winner with this particular storyline thread and hope, really hope that he has outlines and plans for future forays into the people and concepts within both 'Chronoscape' and 'The Muslim Prince' I doubt that anyone buying this book will be disappointed.
Don't take my word for it though, if great story-telling is what you look for in your literature I urge you to see for yourself. Thank you again Roger Ley

Seriously this book makes you think.

Where do we start with this one? Again, another great book from Roger Ley. This man can write a book that keeps you on edge from start to finish.
The main reason is that we can all imagine this happening, but he is the only one writing it down and making our brains work this hard to define fiction from reality. If this had happened, would we all be wearing burka's and changing our religion? Or would we be fighting against the trend?

It was a really good story, if a little short, but I enjoyed it immensely.
The narration was excellent, and the story was highly engaging. At no point did I think I could guess where the story was going, which was great.
I would highly recommend this book/audio and have done to friends. I know I keep saying this about this author, but it's true, pick up his books and try them.

Craig Bowles is a great narrator, and this is my fourth book read by him. He did wonders with the characters. Easy to listen to. I did speed up the narration like usual to 1.3 on Audible.

"God save the king."
An alternate history which posits the question of what might have happened had Princess Diana had not died in the Paris car crash but instead had stayed with, and married, Dodi, converting to the Muslim faith.
This is a short futuristic story encompassing love, hard and political manoeuvring, simply and believable told and nicely narrated by Craig Bowles. I was fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of The Muslim Prince by the rights holder, at my request. Thank you.

Alternate histories are always interesting to consider - so much is possible with simple shifts of circumstance. Quick to read and thought provoking: I was surprised at the emotions is initiated in myself. Recommended.

Simply OMG and Mr Roger Ley’s books worth every second of my time spent on them and I highly recommend them to everyone.

What if Diana hadn’t died? This is such an interesting topic and there are many what if scenarios out there. This novel explores a world where Diana married Dodi and that set in motion events that lead to the future king converting to Islam becoming the first Muslim king ever. It also discusses how the establishment would potentially react. I feel like I’m repeating myself when it comes to Mr Roger Ley’s books, but I absolutely loved this book as well.

Craig Bowles did an excellent job narrating this story and bringing it to life.

I had to remember this was a fictional take a few times. But that being said, I liked how rewriting history played out. For better or worse, the family could have been great in real life. I liked the idea of life in this book over what actually happened.

This is a book tied to the book Chronoscape. The book was a excellent hypothesis on what if Lady Diana would have lived. The book dives into the political turmoil that would have occurred and how different the world may have turned out. I recommend reading both books.

I love books that explore an alternate history - or literally any kind of time-travel because that also influences the past and/or the future. I really enjoyed the take on that, what it would have been like if Diana lived and stayed with Dodi. I enjoyed the futuristic aspects of the story and it could have been longer (which is high praise indeed!).

An epic but darkly dystopian vision of an alternate future where Princess Diana was not killed in a tragic accident.

The ghostly and tenuous tendrils of alternate time frames are an often used theme in science fiction, as well as being an integral part of respected cosmological theories. However, nowhere do these alternate parallel universes appear to hover so close to the actual present reality of this universe as the stories by this author, and The Muslim Prince is by no means any exception to this. Using the death of Princess Diana, a pivotal event in the tree of time of this cosmos, he weaves an alternative future history with England under a monarchy never remotely envisioned in even some of the darkest dreams of the British aristocracy and the top echelons of civil service. A remarkably unfolding future is described with a dark and yet, typically British stiff upper lip, sense of humor that is compulsively absorbing and entertaining to read. Damp and mist-laden descriptions set in England contrast starkly with the sharp imagery of Saudi Arabian deserts and the whistling winds wafting the sands of the dunes. In similar contrast, is the British sense of correctness and optimism against the Arabian ancient and calculating grimness blended with the lilting music of their language and vocal praises to Allah. Against this colorful tapestry, and hovering alertly in the background, we are acutely aware of the curious drone and other intelligence surveillance devices that monitor the fascinating transformation of the monarchy and of Great Britain as this epic unfolds into a future that is disturbingly aligned to the present world. The plot, which provides a hint of the conspiracy theory into the death of Princess Diana, develops into a vision of a grim future as British bureaucracy collides head to head with the machinations of the Muslim world.

"The Muslim Prince" by Roger Ley is believable alternate history, written in clear modernity, with insights that are true to life.

This is a story of love and family, new beliefs and old habits, told with Ley's signature wit. Entwined with evident research, accurate historical references, and discerning language, Ley has presented a compelling "what if."

"What if Diana hadn't died?" This is the question answered in "The Muslim Prince."

In this novella, we begin on that fateful day, only in this version, it is unextraordinary. The beloved princess buckles up safely and encounters no dramatic mishap from relentless paparazzi.

Instead, she lives.

And so does the royal family, unchanged by a tragedy that never happened.

Regal Prince William marries well and continues the royal lineage with baby Prince James of Cambridge.

Through the eyes of young James, we see life in this alternate history, in which Diana Princess of Wales is happily married to Dodi Fayed.

"The Muslim half of his family was so much more interesting and exotic than the Windsors, who carried their history like a wet great-coat."

As James grows to adulthood, and governments gain interest in his Muslim allies, the British Empire develops counter-culture revolution that is fantastical yet believable.

What if she had lived?

In his novel, The Muslim Prince, Roger Ley asks a very interesting question, what if Diana hadn’t died, and the results make for a compelling read. What I really liked in this book was from the very commencement Roger Ley ignores what has passed and creates both a convincing and at times harrowing alternate history, which at times reminded me Ashton Kutcher’s Butterfly Effect.

Each time a character acts consequences abound, which I think is what sold me on the idea, its realism. Diana survives, she converts to Islam and marries Dodi Fayed, that is the simple part but how this affects everybody else. Their individual reactions demonstrated not only the individuality of each character but how far we have all become ingrained in what society deems as normal and this was what I felt was the really pertinent point of the novel.

I would recommend this book to anyone who finds the what if question intriguing for it is an enjoyable read which allows you to immerse yourself in a proposed cultural change in an alternate point in time.

As a kid I loved the “What If” books by Marvel Comics. They would take stories that we all knew and change the characters or outcomes. It was fun to think about how things might have been.

Well, that’s exactly what Roger Ley has done with The Muslim Prince. He changes history by keeping Princess Diana alive. By never dying in that car crash, we get a glimpse into what might have happened and how her influence could have changed the world.

The ideas in this book are clever and the writing is superb. This book also closely ties into one of his other works called Chronoscape, but both can stand alone separate of the other. If you love historical fiction (or future historical fiction) then you have to read this! I can’t recommend this one enough!

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW

I love Rogers book (especially as my husband appears to be a time traveller in one of them) and was not disappointed with this one. In this story we look at what would happen if Princess Diana had not died and has married Dodi Fayed. Add into the mix her Grandson who although next in line to the thrown wants to convert to Islam. This story defiantly makes you think and although I would hope in reality as a country we would not be so narrow minded I do feel that a lot of the issues and concerns raised in this book would still be prevalent if this was to occur. I really enjoyed the story and it certainly makes you think. Another great narration as well.

This isn't my first encounter with the imagination of Roger Ley, and I assure you it won't be my last. I don't know where he gets his ideas from but I am so glad he writes them down. This story takes you on a journey you won't be expecting. I was listening with my politically correct head on, but my heart kept thinking, 'don't mess with the monarchy'. I was never sure who's side I was on, as I kept switching allegiance all over the place. Wonderfully narrated by the enormously talented Craig Bowles, this book will leave you with a lot to think about. I've listened to it twice now and I'll be revisiting it again. Clever, inspired and brilliantly executed - this is one not to be missed.

I was interested from the start by the title and it was well worth reading. From the beginning all the characters were very well drawn and believable as real persons. I thought the premise was exciting and the plot and storyline were well paced. The characters, well known and not so well known, were as I imagined them to be. Roger has taken a story we know and twisted into something special. I am so glad I read this book.

Haunting “If Only” Mesmerizing!

Overall: 5 of 5 stars Performance: 5 of 5 stars Story: 5 of 5 stars

Have you ever wondered how history would have been affected … if ONE thing happened differently … say a last minute substitution for the driver in Princess Diana’s Paris limousine … one fateful night in 1997? How would history … and the world we know today … look? Who would have profited … or lost. Who would be sinner … or saint, IF … “The Muslim Prince” ~ What if Diana Hadn’t Died? … had been the reality of that day! That is the question answered in this beautifully written, finely detailed, enthralling, and horrifyingly believable, alternate ending stunner! If you like stories that make you think, long after the last words are spoken, you’re in the right place! The beautifully drawn, brilliantly defined characters, play their roles interestingly and convincingly, speaking lines that ring true and move the story along brilliantly! The scene setting is perfectly clear, beautifully serving to explain necessary information like characters backstories, scene locations, religious and familial customs! I love how this provides insightful depth and clarity without interfering with the flow or pace of the story! The story itself is smooth, and frighteningly believable in concept, and that ending, whoa! I’m giving no details, I don’t want to spoil this stunner in any way for those yet to listen, but holy WOW, I was not prepared! I have to say, upon reflection, (and I have done a lot of reflecting since finishing) this really couldn’t … shouldn’t … have gone any other way, and I could also see where, in premise, THIS story could have happened! What also added to the sense of realism as I listened was the fabulous narration! The characters and scenes came alive! The moods, the expressions, the dialogue, EVERYTHING was perfect, spot on PERFECT! I also have a confession … I listened to this gem twice … from beginning to end, it was that good … no, not good, perfect, five stars PERFECT, hauntingly perfect in every way!

My review is written after listening to the audio version of this book

I will start my review by saying that this is the first book by this author I have ever read or listened to and to be honest I really had no idea how this story would go. I mean would the world be drastically altered if Diana had lived? Would the control the royal family held over her sons have been any less strong? I had always thought not really but in this well-constructed world, the answer is most definitely.

This book takes the royal family and the succession of an altered United Kingdom, one where Scotland has gained its independence in a direction I personally had never imagined. The author gives us an alternative near future full of intrigue and political manipulations, where the biggest issue for our leaders seems to be what religion the heir to the throne follows. Personally, I find the fact that the head of State is also the head of the Church of England to be rather outmoded now when the UK supposedly prides itself on being a multicultural nation and the Church of England only exists because Henry IIIV wanted to divorce his wife and marry his mistress, supposedly with the Church's blessing.

The insights and dark humour and well-defined characters both in the UK and Saudi Arabia certainly added to my enjoyment of this unusual, alternative near history the author presents us with. But just how far the powers that be will go to hold on to their stations and the status quo did come as a surprise.

The narration of the book by Craig Bowles was clear and concise and added to my enjoyment of this interestingly different story.
