Learning to D.A.N.C.E. With Your Demons: A Guide To Self Transformation

Rate this book
This is not your typical self-help book that tells you how great you are, pats you on the back, and sends you on your way to buy the next book. It is for readers who desire courageous content, not just audacious titles. This book will challenge you to take a closer and more truthful look at yourself. It will cause you to think critically, confront certain aspects of who you are, and see yourself through a lens of honesty. We cannot become the best version of ourselves until we understand and remove the darker parts of our human nature. It will touch a nerve, may piss you off, and cause a defensive, "That's not me," response. Learning to D.A.N.C.E. With Your Demons offers you an alternative self-transformational guide that asks you to become a better person and in doing so, become a better member of society.

Francesca Flood introduces her insightful treatise by stating, "Life is a Dance." and so it is. And obviously this author has been to many dances. This book brilliantly uses D.A.N.C.E. ( Detect, Assess, Neutralize, Choreograph, and Engage.) as a metaphor for life experiences. She takes the lead as we discuss tango, shuffle, and Wah Watusi to illustrate how dance affects our psyche and releases endorphins when done with a positive frame of mind. However, we self-sabotage when we refuse to acknowledge or deal with our "demons," (ie: depression, anxiety, substance abuse, etc.) This unique self-help book teaches us strategies in which to co-exist and make peace with these issues. Not simply to accept them, but to work through them. Although Ms. Flood discusses various psychological approaches such as Aaron Beck's Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), to help us better understand our behavior, the book is down-to-earth, and comprehensible to the layperson. She is unabashedly bold as she discusses human nature, good and bad alike. Her book is witty, perceptive, and easy to read. Alas I read it in one night and I reflect on it as I move through my day's activities. Hey, it takes practice to become a good and constructive human being. Akin to her reference of the phenomenal "Riverdance," they didn't learn to move like that with just one lesson! You too, can learn to D.A.N.C.E. confidently through life, with this book as a guide!

Excellent book that takes complex issues and making them relatable. I wish this book was available 50 years ago.

I recently purchased Learning to D.A.N.C.E. with Your Demons because I found this review of the book:

“In a world that is unfortunately sated with self-inflicted pain, misery, and ennui, it is refreshing to encounter a narrative that is loaded with helpful insights about how to achieve authentic self-discovery and wholesome healing. This book offers helpful tips for deep awakening and realization. D.A.N.C.E. describes this process with eloquence, grace, and candor. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the quest for inner peace, joy, and transformation.”

As I read it, I agree with Dr. Akinade. It is eye-opening and thought provoking.

Dancing always elicits a smile. Regardless of the dance and even if we just see someone else dancing, we smile. This book will have you dancing to a happier life in no time!
Written for the common person, this book brilliantly blends psychology, philosophy and spirituality, in compelling terms, to distinctly identify some of the demons we all carry with us and then how to D.A.N.C.E. them away. Well researched and well written, this is a joyful path to awareness and a happier life.
This is a book to enjoy and share! Highly recommend for book clubs!

A pointed and precise read where the length (119 pages) adds to the enjoyment of the work. With so many self-help books available in the market, it is refreshing to find one that gives me a new perspective. Detect, Assess, Neutralize, Choreograph, and Engage or D.A.N.C.E. is a process that I can follow. If the book was longer it would take away from its simplicity, and the length would take away from its message. The examples and explanations are spot on.

Having struggled with mental health issues on and off for years, I am always looking for new ways to attack the same grind of life. This book almost borders on the practices of Stoicism. One cannot control what happens, only how to respond.

An easy enough read, recommended to those looking for peace in life. Completed the ebook on a plane from Kansas City to New York. Had one of the best walks in Central Park when I got back to the city. Thank you Francesca Flood.

What a jewel! A comprehensive look at all things human that cause conflict within ourselves as we navigate life, with its occasional storms and upsets. The author uses the Acronym D.A.N.C.E as a pneumonic, (just like a pilot uses a checklist during an emergency) as an easy to remember... mental checklist... to deal with situations and events.
After reading this book I have an increased self-awareness of preconceived notions, bias, and prejudice that might be at play in my life. No one is immune to misreading events and situations! The author teaches us to better assess situations with clear eyes and why we are assessing things the way we are... and maybe incorrectly. Tools are given that allow us to neutralize situations or at least better cope with them before they consume us or our relationships. The book teaches us how to choreograph all of the elements at play, like getting all the players in an orchestra on the same sheet of music. Lessons and examples are given on how to engage in an outcome that is more clear-eyed...with a better result. The book made me take a hard look at myself. Because of this book, I will be a better person with my fellow man/woman and able to better dance with my demons. When life ship is getting tossed about on the seas, this little treasure is a prescription that can be used like oil sailors of old who would pour oil overboard to calm violent seas. D.A.N.C.E is your oil.
