Kizzy doesn’t mind skipping out on her alchemy lessons to pick the hot tieberry fields on her island, even if the result is blistered and sore hands. But what she doesn’t particularly care for is being ambushed by an alluring pirate claiming her dead father is being held prisoner by the infamous ravenshifter, Cerulea. Believing him was out of the question at first...until her mother admits to altering the details of their mystical family history.
Now Kizzy has to make a decision - sail with Sadyn and risk her life to save that of a stranger? Or let go of her family’s past and watch the sea swallow it whole?
3.5 stars. I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book. I loved the story but the writing/ grammar errors drove me crazy. It was almost like it wasn’t proof read; quotations that weren’t closed, words missing letters, commas instead of periods, and every now and again it seemed like a sentence was half erased and a new sentence started. Also, a few points in the book I feel like some of the sentences should’ve just been left out or worded a bit differently. Like it explains some things in too much depth that you pick up on between the lines that I feel like it didn’t really need to be stated. But I know this is a YA book so I understand. I know I’m no expert on grammar so no judgment to the author. We are all human and make mistakes but I just found it distracting.
As far as the story, I loved the mystery of who Sadyn really is to the MC and what exactly was happening with her dad. You get hints of there being something more but you don’t get to find out in this book. I also love that the MC starts to find herself and her bravery and goes from being a homebody alchemist to a B.A. stabbing rooks. I know it’s unrealistic that only after 1 or 2 fighting lessons she can beat up a right hand man, but adrenaline is an amazing thing. I also think the way the fighting was wrote did make it a little more realistic, in the fact that he underestimated her to have a dagger and was able to sneak in a stabbing to injure him.
Another thing I also really liked about the story is the boy fell in love first! Usually you see a lot of stories where the girl gets all sappy over a boy she hardly knows, but this time it was the other way around and I really appreciated that. I think the author left their relationship on a interesting note that kinda makes you question whether they would be compatible in the future with wanting two different things out of life. Kizzy, after experiencing a life of being home bound with her plants wants adventure. Whereas after having a lifetime of adventure, Sadyn wants to settle down and start a family. I’m kinda hoping after the ending where Kizzy finally puts her foot down and makes the choice to choose adventure and go after Sadyn that she doesn’t go back to living the life she had for his sake. It’ll be interesting to see how the author plays with that part of the story.
I also really loved that you get both sides to the story from Sadyn and Kizzy. I always love reading the males POV, so A+ there!
Overall, I give the book 3.5 stars. I enjoyed it and I will be reading the next book to see how the story plays out, but I do also see a lot of room for improvement. Nothing personal to the author as I understand how expensive getting a book published can cost but I just wish the editing was a little better and maybe it would’ve caught the mistakes. Great story and I recommend it to any fellow pirate lovers.

I really enjoyed this book! Not only is it a tale about pirates, adventure, mysterious creatures and romance, but it is also written by our very own MCLS coworker. It is about a young girl who lives with her mother until a young boy comes into her life and turns everything she thought she knew, upside down. She is finding out about family secrets that urge her to want to know more, by embarking on an adventure with some newfound friends.
I also liked how each chapter was short, which of course causes you to say "just one more chapter", resulting in staying up until the wee hours of the morning to keep reading. I am now recommending this book to everyone who asks for a recommendation.
