Americana Sampler from Marianne Fons and Liz Porter By popular demand, all of the blocks originally featured in Marianne Fons and Liz Porter's Quilter's Complete Guide are now compiled in this one handy volume. This book is the companion to Fons and Porter's Guide to Quilting. How to Quilt techniques are in the Guide to Quilting, while the block patterns are in the Americana Sampler book. Both of the books were used in my first BLOCK OF THE MONTH, LEARN TO QUILT class. The techniques used are very traditional but very effective; learn them, practice them and you can make any quilt you want.
My girlfriend says, making traditional quilts with traditional fabrics make the projects timeless. I disagree and feel you should make what you want, just learn the techniques an apply them where appropriate.
There have been many techniques invented and improved upon since this book was published, but this is a good place to start. All in all, I keep these books on my shelf and refer to it often. There is a lot of good information in them. Some of the patterns are dated, but others are timeless.
I recently saw the quilts made from this class in a local quilt show... they were timeless and individual. Everyone took what they learn and made the quilt theirs.
This book is just the patterns from a larger book by Fons & Porter. I have the larger book but didn't realize they were companion books for some time. I have made the patterns in this book and think they look beautiful and are easy to do.
