Besides personal preferences for academic styles that this did not meet, my biggest problems were these:
- besides being titled “The Culture of HipHop” it almost exclusively focused on German voices. Not only that, but it seemed to actively discredit Hip Hop’s American origins.
- the chapters really were quite short and my reading flow was disrupted by frequent appearances of not-very-well-chosen headings and sub-headings.
- the authors took a lot of time to explain and reproduce the many theories they were working with, but after that exemplary analysis on the topic were seldom made
Overall I didn’t enjoy this and having researched the field of hip hop studies for some time now I didn’t gain anything from it, scientifically speaking.
