Bishop Andrew Cozzens presents a synthesis of the nuptial theology of the priesthood and the role of the evangelical counsels in the life of priests.
From the Introduction: "To come to [a] deeper understanding of the priesthood and priestly way of life, we will begin with a scriptural study of the nuptial nature of redemption so that we may understand fully Christ as the Bridegroom of the Church and His nuptial self-gift on the Cross. Then, we will show how this nuptial self-gift is lived concretely by Christ through the evangelical counsels, which make His self-gift total. In this, we explore how and why Christ lived obedience, celibacy, and poverty as an expression of His nuptial self-gift. It is this connection between Christ's evangelical way of life and His spousal self-gift that allows us to see the connection between the evangelical counsels and the priesthood. To become a living image of the bridegroom, the priest must imitate this total self-gift of Christ by living all the evangelical counsels and not only celibacy."
A scholarly yet accessible study of how priests are called to live out their identity "in the person of Christ, bridegroom of the Church," and how the evangelical counsels (poverty, chastity, obedience) help priests to do that. This book provided me with good material for prayer, and deepened my sense of who I am as a priest. It also helped me to see how the evangelical counsels apply to me as a diocesan priest -- I found that part of the book especially inspiring.
