THE SUPERHERO SERIES IS NOW AVAILABLE AS A COLLECTION.
Gary Karkofsky has always wanted to be a supervillain. Ever since his infamous brother was killed an antihero, he's secretly yearned to gain powers and take over the world. Gary gets his chance when the magical cloak of recently deceased superhero, the Nightwalker, is delivered right to his doorstep. But is he evil enough to be a supervillain? What will his wife think?
Follow Gary as he becomes Merciless: The Supervillain without MercyTM. Gary will finds himself bouncing from one insane situation to another. Whether its recruiting his ex-girlfriend and a washed up mastermind as henchmen, fighting against villains like the Ice Scream Man, escaping from moon prisons, dealing with zombie apocalypses, or working against the insane President of the United States—Gary is always just barely keeping his head above water.
But maybe the world's worst supervillain can be its best hero. Or at least a passable one.

I'm really glad to have gotten an omnibus edition assembled for THE SUPERVILLAINY SAGA's first three books. When I originally wrote THE RULES OF SUPERVILLAINY, it was a massive 500 page book that was meant to be a self-contained story. Jim Bernheimer (Confessions of a D-List Supervillainy), convinced me to make it a smaller 2-parter. Well, when I finished the second book, I came up with a massive twist and continuing plotline that just had to be explored. You'll have to read it to know and you know if you've read it.
I think the books work better as a single continuous story now and that purchasing the omnibus is probably better than an individual book. The story of Gary Karkofsky a.k.a MERCILESS: THE SUPERVILLAIN WITHOUT MERCYtm and how it continuously gets himself deeper in a situation that he never possibly could have imagined. Which, honestly, is on him since someone shouldn't need to be told costumed supervillain is a poor career choice.
It's a loving homage to Spider-Man, the Dresden Files, Batman: The Animated Series, and all the various other stories I grew up on. It's also completely gonzo and embodying the weirdest tropes of comics. As the Joker said, "Why so serious?"
You don't even need to read the rest of this review -- go ahead and buy it. You won't regret it. Most omnibus volumes are a good value, but getting three books of the Supervillainy Saga for the price of one is one hell of a good deal. The Supervillainy Saga is easily one of my favorite series, and there would be no way I'd turn down this bargain.
Supervillainy Saga is a fun, light-hearted parody of the superhero genre that elicits nostalgia for the golden age of comics. It's purposely packed with superhero tropes and comic references yet is still wildly entertaining with a roller-coaster ride of a plotline. However, all the poking-fun at the genre does not prevent it from being a great superhero story (or supervillain story, I suppose), and its satirical approach is fun, clever, and unique; Phipps really enjoys writing Supervillainy Saga, and you can tell that it is a labor of love by someone who has a life-long passion for comics.
Each book in the series gives a new satirical take on a genre of media or pop culture. For example, while the first focuses on comics, heroes, and villains, the second book is full of witty humor and parodies of fantasy, sci-fi, and horror genres. Even with the humor and spoofs, Phipps still manages to make his characters interesting and has created them with unique personalities and interpersonal relationships, which continue to develop throughout each book and narrative arc. It's a rare thing to have such deep and unique characters in a light-hearted comedy series. My favorite thing about the series is that it is full of irreverent comedy, entertaining pop-culture references, and satirical allusion to classic comics; reading or listening to The Supervillainy Saga is a guaranteed way to lift your spirits and make you smile.
The narration is excellent and really brings life to the saga's characters. Jeffrey Kafer is a talented narrator that has really managed to capture (or create) the personality of the primary characters through unique voices and makes this book very entertaining to listen to. I already knew Kafer was an excellent voice actor, so it's even higher praise for me to say that he takes his performance to an all-new level with The Supervillainy Saga. His excellent narration creates tense moments, engaging action scenes, lovable characters (even the villains!), and hilarious dialog. Phipps and Kafer together make this book a great success.
Special thanks to C.T. Phipps, who provided me with this book at my request.
Gary is your average everyday sociopathic super-villain. Well...maybe not.
He is happily married, has a supervillain older brother that was killed by an insane superhero, and has an extreme fondness for quips and pop culture references. (Did I mention he is terrible at being a supervillain?)
Gary is Merciless: The Supervillain without MercyTM. Ducking and dodging his way through bank robberies, (inevitably spoiled by other viillains), and then charging the city for protecting its bank.
With him are his partners, Cindy and Diabloman. They are thick as thieves with an extra dose of maraud. Villainy isn't easy. And Supervillainy is the worst. If the cops don't get you, the superheroes will...or even worse, the supervillains.
Gary is Deadpool, without the insanity but with an extra dose of Attention Deficit Disorder. And best of all...he is really fun.
The jokes come fast and furious as Merciless has never been without something to say. And while he would never intentionally harm an innocent. I wouldn't bring up the Star Wars Prequels around him. (But if you liked those, you're not really innocent are you?)
And like all comic book universes, the fun doesn't stop on his version of Earth. Crisis Events and Epic Crossovers abound as characters from the CT Phipps Universe come and go. WereDeer, Robot Assassins, and Cthulhu touched Rangers are on hand...or hoof as the occasion demands.
There is no certainty in SuperVillainy. Anything can happen...and often does.
First of all, awesome bargain for these books! It is a lot of reading pleasure for a low price.
Second-they were fun to read. Our main character is a villian at heart... Kinda. He keeps doing bad things, but the results turn out to be kind of good. He has a cloak that acts like his moral compass (yeah, his cloak is kinda bossy), that he often doesn't listen to, but either way, you can't help but like him. Definitely recommend reading this series
This hefty specimen of a book contains the first SIX books in the Supervillainy series, which is phenomenal value.
The series follows Gary Karkofski as he accidentally receives a magical cloak.
Deciding that he can't be a hero, after the death of his brother at the hands of a Punsiher type, but with too much of a conscience to be a real bad guy, Gary becomes Merciless, the Supervillain without mercy (tm)! More of an anti-villain, than anti-hero, Gary makes his own way, along with his crew of various friends, accomplices, and ne'er do wells, in a series of stories that I promise you won't see coming.
This series is so much fun that I've both read the books and listened to the Audible, which is something I haven't really done for any other books, which says a lot about how great they were.
If you like a different kind of Superhero story, you should absolutely try this one, it's fantastic!
These first three books in the series are a fun read. There's so many tv, movie, gaming, etc references that come at just the right time. All the tropes with a comedic flare.
