His Majesty's Indian Allies is a study of British-Indian policy in North America from the time of the American Revolution to the end of the War of 1812, with particular focus on Canada.
Robert S. Allen earned his doctorate in history at the University of Wales. He is deputy chief, Claims and Historical Research Centre, Department of Indian and Northern Affairs.
Allen suggests that land claims have dominated the agenda of British Aboriginal policy in Canada since the time of First Contact. He notes that the Indians were very useful allies during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, but after 1814 the Indians were seen by the British more as a burden than as allies. For the British the dominating issue on the agenda was what to do with their former allies.
