Demons, angels, mystery, time jumps, and magical intrigue, found family - what else could there be missing from a good book?!?

This book was very enjoyable. Originally, I enjoyed the concept, but I was a bit hesitant to read it because of the religious influences on it. I'm not one for huge religious influences on books as I want to escape reality for a bit. HOWEVER I loved this book. The religious influences were not as large as I thought the would be. Of course they still play a large part in the book, but it didn't feel like it was getting force fed down my throat, which is what I was afraid of.

This entire adventure has become one of my favorites! The mystery that was plagued in the book made me want to keep reading, reading, and reading to see if I was right or if another curveball was going to be thrown my way! I wouldn't classify this book as a full mystery, but there was definitely large, mysterious parts to it that definitely drove home the ending.

It thrusts you right into the middle of the action, which was enjoyable, but a tad confusing when trying to find your footing. That's the ONLY reason this book is getting half a star redacted. It just was confusing a bit at the beginning.

The dialogue was amazing and it felt like real people would say those things, and it wasn't full of narration and inner-monologues. People actually talked and responded to on another- amazing. I haven't read a book in a hot minute that had that much dialogue and made me want to enjoy it and keep reading. I enjoyed the characters and how much their personalities differed from one another. It felt like it was real people talking to each other, and they didn't really stray from the character that was set up at the beginning, enjoyable. Sometimes it feels like overarching character developments try to be made in some books and it doesn't work out because of how much the characters changed, but this book didn't do that. I still felt character development took place, but it didn't change the entire character!

I have throughly enjoyed reading this wonderful piece of self published work and I seriously want you to read it, too!
(Thank you to Mr. Walker for sending me a copy of his book for my unbiased review! I really enjoyed it and I cannot thank you enough!!!)

The Night Chasers by Wesley Walker (2021, self-published)

The Night Chasers is a fast-paced urban fantasy novel covering two differing plotlines and an array of fantastic locations, monsters and characters.

The chapters are short, no more than 4 pages and this makes it an easy to read book which I was somewhat unable to put down. The chapters alternate between the two plotlines and I found myself wanting to continue way past my bed and break times...

The storyline leaves you in confusion but isn't frustrating in doing so, it makes you say one more chapter before bed, even when it's the wee small hours.

It can be a bit overly descriptive at times, to the point it's a bit muddy to get through. But then, paradoxically, at other times, it can be ever so slightly under described leaving the reader to fill in some blanks, this is both good and bad as it gives the reader a bit of imaginative freedom.

Character development is slow, this could be purposeful in an attempt to heighten the mystery and confusion of the plot, but after a while its frustrating and makes it difficult to relate to characters and their behaviours.

I found the book difficult to put down, but I did find some scenes I assume were supposed to be tense or thrilling to be rather lacklustre and sometimes a bit cheesy.

The dialogue between characters is well written as is the universe that has been created from scratch, and Walker has a keen conversational eye. I love the inspiration drawn from Christianity and the neo-gothic urban vibe the book gives.

There are some poor sentences in the book, what I would call 'rookie' errors, for example '...onto the flooded floor, sending ripples across the flooded cellar floor'. These can take you out of the moment for a hot second, but I feel it's nothing a keener eye for editing can't fix in the future.

This book is perfect for anyone looking for a fast paced, story-driven dark fantasy novel. For fans of horror, the occult, supernatural and the esoteric. It's a great quick read and I'm excited to see Walker improve his craft as he continues to write.

This book is a dark and meandering adventure through a truly Lovecraftian landscape. The characters are each unique and defined. Every loss is deeply felt. Left me wanting more. Such a fantastic read.

The Night Chasers by Wesley Walker is an urban fantasy thriller with Christian, supernatural, and fantasy elements mixed in. I don’t usually read this genre, but I did enjoy this book.

The Night Chasers switches between two situations. One is a group of survivors trapped in a manor with dark creatures haunting the grounds. In order to survive, they must fight with their limited resources. Their only hope is a mysterious little girl, but one by one they die decreasing any hope of survival. The second is Richard (Roach), a cop who is investigating brutal murders with Jazzlyn, an atypical partner who is an addict and has some sort of powers.

I was confused as to why there were two parallel storylines, but it made sense further in the book. The author dropped a few hints as to the connection of the storylines. The Night Chasers is a fast-paced, action-packed urban fantasy thriller based in part on Christian beliefs. My limited knowledge of Christian beliefs caused some additional confusion for me. This debut is in the third point of view, it is well-written, and the story flows smoothly. This is great for lovers of fantasy and young adult readers. I look forward to the author’s next book.

A big thank you to the author for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked this story, even though I usually read young adult books.

I loved the dark atmosphere of the story. The demonic creatures and portals to hell kinda reminded me of Constantine. Which is one of my favorite movies.

The different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning, but the further I got, the better I understood. The way the storylines eventually connected, was done very well and had me on the edge of my seat.

The characters were all badass, but still realistic, especially Jazzlyn. She and Roach made for very entertaining conversations.

I definitely recommend this book if you like a fast-paced, spine-tingling story with supernatural elements.

Note: I got this book for review before its launch through Reedsy Discovery.

The disorienting feeling of being put in the middle of a story in full swing does its best to push the reader into a muddle. Trying to understand what's happening and piecing together the threads of this story takes a while, but once you get the gist it turns into an engaging story of a bunch of people struggling to contain the horror, and a pair trying to find it. This cross between supernatural horror and detective story makes the book a rarity: I haven't come across many authors who attempt it.

To start off, I have to praise the author's character-building. Everyone we meet is well-fleshed out. Jazzlyn, Roach, Ethan, all feel like three-dimensional characters. The camaraderie between Jazzlyn and Roach, in particular, is very well-done. But Ethan's coterie is by far the more interesting bunch. Unfortunately, they're not given enough time to grow and for us to see their relationships in proper perspective, but that's all right. They still read engagingly. The story is also well-constructed and feels like it is made to order for the characters. The story of Ethan and his group reads like a constricting vice. The combination of supernatural horror and fantasy gives it an interesting hue. The parts with Jazzlyn and Roach are more straightforward, though no less well-constructed.

Unfortunately, here we come to a major snag with this book. The world-building. Fantasy demands explanations and details. The magic and the setting feel half-finished. The author probably has everything inside their mind, but it hasn't translated to paper with finesse. It is obvious that the author has taken elements from Christian mythology, but there are enough differences that one feels a bit lost.

Part of this comes down to the alternating nature of the narration. The narratives alternate every other chapter. Unfortunately, since the chapters are so short, the reader, in effect, reads one scene of the first story, then goes to a scene in the second story, before coming back to another scene in the first story and then back to the second story and so on. The rapid alternation is jarring and is, perhaps, the primary reason the author is unable to spend a lot of time on worldbuilding. A lot of details are left to the reader's imagination. What is the role of the church in this world? What is the nature of the supernatural powers being talked about? Why are certain characters so important? What are powers of the different classes?

While not a perfect story by any means, this isn't to say that it isn't engaging. I struggled to get into it at first, but once I got hooked I finished it in one sitting. It is a refreshing change in a sea of fantasy. A little more focus on the world-building and this would have been an extraordinary find.

A bunch of brave survivors are held captive in a manor with dark beings haunting their very soul. Betrayed by their mentor, with limited weapons and resources to fight, they have just one hope, a little girl who is the key to the supernatural riddle and hence their freedom. Slowly one by one, they are perishing, leaving behind dread in their heart and a bleak hope of survival.

On a the other hand Roach, a cop is assigned a partner Jazzlyn, an addict also a wayfarer, to assist in the brutal murders.

She has special skills where she can see beyond anyone's comprehension. As they start exploring the crime scenes, they sense a sinister presence and a peculiar link between the murders.

Are the murders linked to the haunted manor? Why are they held captive, surrounded by an unbreakable barrier? How will they keep the little girl safe when she is hunted by both the sides? Will they escape or die trying?

The Night Chasers is a fast paced supernatural, urban fantasy thriller with infusion of Christian ethnicity and beliefs. This is the author's debut novel and he has maintained a balance of humour in the serious plot. The writing is effortless and expressive throughout.

As I have a limited knowledge about Christian Mythology which plays a critical part in the story, it was confusing at times. But a little research got me back on track.

"The Night Chasers" has everything, one can ask for in a fantasy novel and perfect for the young adult readers. Sensing a sequel, this book is gripping and a must read. Get your copy now!

I normally am not into Christian and fantasy reads. But it is always a good idea to try out new things.
I would depict this book as primarily fantasy with several Christian undertones. At first I did not care for Jazzlyn, the stealth main character. In my mind, I found Roach to be the most estimable person in the book. Red was a close second. I do not wish to give any spoilers. But let me just say that the first chapter started out with a bang and the suspense continued from there. I appreciate the imagery the author used to illustrate several themes thru the book. At first I felt very disconcerted over the professor's personality. But over time I came to find myself feeling sorry for his obviously resplendent but fallen mind. The techniques of using alternating chapters and switching from past and present aided in keeping me on the edge on my seat. I could sum up this book with just one word. RIVETING.

Calling all horror/mystery/supernatural fans this ones for you. Told in 2 different timelines, The Night Chasers will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to figure it all out. It’s a dark and suspenseful ride filled with demons, hauntings, angels and more.

I love books that have multiple timelines where you have to slowly piece together how the timelines mesh and what exactly is going on. It’s hard to put a book like this down because just when you get really invested in one timeline, it switches up and you remember how invested you were in the other timeline and before you know it you’ve finished the book!

This book is a mysterious and heart-capturing story that made even me shed a tear or two. Throughout the book you can feel the gloom and haze that the characters are fighting to be free of. The characters are so well-written that I have a hard time believing they are not real people. One of the best books I have ever read.

The Night Chasers is the debut novel by Wesley Walker. It is an urban fantasy set across two timelines with demons, angels, wayfarers & vampires.

In the past, we have a group of friends & colleagues trapped in a manor which has been corrupted by evil. They were betrayed by the trusted colleague and mentor and are working to solve the riddle & ultimately gain their freedom from the evil that is holding them prisoner. Flash-forward twenty years into the future & Detective Richard Manucy (Roach) and Jazzlyn (a wayfarer) are working together to solve a series of murders dating back twenty years.

The book jumps between the two timelines and slowly starts to connect the storylines together. The book did alternate every other chapter with the past & present storylines. As a personal critique, I would have liked a couple of chapters in one timeline before jumping to the other timeline but the chapters were short, so it didn’t take long to swap between them.

The writing style was very descriptive and it helped paint a vivid picture of what was happening. I particularly enjoyed reading the descriptions of the appearances & smells of the demons. The book really detailed how vile they were. The descriptive nature also assisted with visualising the terror associated with the battles with the demons & hellhounds. Overall, a lot of thought has gone into the storyline and the underlying magic system and the effects the evil has on the characters on a physical and mental level.

Thank you to Wesley Walker for gifting me copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy of this book [collaboration with author]

The Night Chasers, Wesley Walker's debut novel, is a thrilling urban fantasy story that follows two main points of view set across two different timelines. In the past, a wide set of characters trapped in a manor fending off the evil and in the future, an amusing duo looking into a series of murders.

The story jumps from one point to the other, with small chapters that built suspense and a lot of tension, albeit a bit confusing at first. The writing was one of my favorite things about this book. The author creates very strong images and descriptions and a very dark and mysterious atmosphere.

The characters fascinated me. They felt so real to me, making me relate to them. Even the minor characters were very interesting, and I would've liked to get to know them a bit better. My favorites were, of course, Jazzlyn and Roach. I loved their dynamic and the snarky dialogue and I definitely want to see more of them.

Overall, I very much enjoyed this book! It had me on the edge of my seat, it had a perfect mix of fantasy elements like demons, angels, even vampires, and pure mystery/thriller vibes. Would recommend!

I started this book right at the start of a reading slump, so it took me a lot longer to read it than it likely would have otherwise; it was a pretty fast-paced novel, but I just hadn't felt like reading for several days. It had many qualities that I almost instantly like in a book: alternating chapters (past and present), strong female leads, and a supernatural aspect.

The alternating chapters were a bit confusing at first, but once I caught on, it was a lot easier to keep up with every character. All of them were written amazingly; they all felt so real, which I loved. Jazzlyn was by far my favorite. Her relationship with Roach was almost always entertaining; their bickering definitely softened some of the tension when necessary.

I personally really liked Walker's writing style. He had the perfect mix of humor and suspense, both of which weren't overwhelming at all. As I've said, I really liked the way he handled the characters. Everything just felt so realistic, which I always love. It made the book more enjoyable. I look forward to any other book he releases in the future.

I was quite confused with the Christian-centric aspects, but I did enjoy learning about it! It actually led to a bit of side research after I finished the book. Other than the confusion with that, the book did flow easily!

It's the best book I've ever written. Seriously, however, this is a labor of love, albeit a painful, twisted, and tortured love. A story about how tragedy and the madness of human pain that precipitates from that tragedy can affect people in a world of demons, angels, and other creatures of the night.

Why you should read it? Because you like a dark and relatively well told narrative of people overcoming evil as they grapple with the deep emotional suffering of their grief.
