The shocking truths revealed by the Emissaries of the Sa’Nerra continue to send tremors through the ranks of the Fleet and United Governments. Then an unprecedented strike at the heart of Fleet’s most important front-line command outpost only strengthens the resolve of the War Council to sue for peace. But peace is impossible. Against the Sa’Nerra there is only victory or death. With the Omega Taskforce fractured and its secrets on the verge of being revealed, the resolve of Captain Lucas Sterling remains unbroken. Under the command of Fleet Admiral Griffin, Sterling must take the Invictus deep into the Sa’Nerran half of the Void, in search of the alien super-weapon that goes by the name of Titan. But there is also a new hope. Believed dead for a decade, Sterling must scour the Void for the one scientist who can unravel the mystery of the alien neural control technology. Yet even if Sterling can find him, there are no guarantees this man will help. Alone in the Void and surrounded by the enemy and the remnants of human civilization that the United Governments abandoned to their fates, Sterling has only his advanced ship and talented crew to rely on. Dangers lurk in every star system and at every spaceport. Yet Sterling and his crew are uniquely suited to the mission. Liberated from the shackles of Fleet moralities, Sterling is every bit as cold-hearted and ruthless as the enemies that seek to destroy him. This will be the sternest test of the Omega Taskforce yet. And it is a test that Captain Lucas Sterling does not intend to fail.

Plenty of action, very fast paced, wish I could give it a five but I cannot.
I like the characters first of all the camaraderie between Lucas and Mercedes is great. The new supporting character a female chief engineer is good also. It’s interesting that the captain is surrounded by three women and one man for his main crew. All these characters are unique and show signs of good character development. I cannot give this book a five because no chairs on a spaceship, it truly truly bugs me. On anything moving you have forces of inertia in this last book because there are no chairs the captain broke ribs. That’s just too silly. There are a few little niggling things as well for example, you The author uses commandos as red shirts, The captain and crew go into a hostile environment and only carry pistols, you only have one helmsman on the ship. These are the few things that keep me from giving this book a five if the author has beta readers you should fire them and get new ones. Besides that this is a good Second installment in the series
At the start of Void Recon, the Crew, and all of Humanity, are still coming to terms with the announcements made by McQueen at the end of Book 1, that the Sa’Nerran want ‘Peace’, and that there is a special unit operating with their own mandate. Whilst coming to terms with this, Sterling and Banks find themselves in the middle of a new epidemic of terrorist activities, in which those wanting to support peace and unification with the Sa’Nerran, suddenly start to attack installations on Fleet operated worlds, trying to disrupt their operations. Within a few pages of starting this book, you are thrust into this heart pounding, action-packed thrill ride on a train of death, as Sterling and Banks have to fight to the death to stop a Mag-Train from slamming at high speed into the rear of another Mag-Train on the same track. And the book does not slow down from there. It jumps from one brutal, action-packed scenario to another, both in space as the Invictus faces off against various Sa’Nerran foes, and hand-to-hand combat in away missions, as members of the crew have to head into dangerous situations to achieve their goals. In this second book, the Crew of the Invictus have returned from discovering about the super weapon, only to find that they have a much greater threat now, the Sa’Nerran are using propaganda to turn not just Fleet personnel, but also civilians against them. As a result, Command has been forced to look at a peaceful outcome to the war, sending a peace envoy to the Sa’Nerran. However, the Void Recon Team know that the Sa’Nerran have no interest in peace, with the building of the massive ship, with a weapon that can punch a hole through a planet. And with McQueen now in their clutches, and turned, offering them all of the information of an Omega Captain, the Sa’Nerran are in a very good strategic position. It is now a race for the crew of the Invictus to enter the void and find a long James Colicos, the scientist who developed the neural head equipment that is being corrupted by the Sa’Nerran and allowing them to gain control of Fleet Officers and take control of everything. I don’t want to give away too many spoilers, but the crew of the Invictus are faced with an intriguing and very difficult future. It is not just the Sa’Nerran that the crew of the Invictus have to fight though, they are also having to take on their old crewmates and friends as well, as the Sa’Nerran have turned them, making this even harder. This makes for a really fascinating read, as there is such a deep psychological element to this story, and Ogden does this so well. Sterling as the Main Character, is specifically focused on, as he has to try and navigate the situations that he and the Crew of Invictus find themselves in. As things get more desperate, we begin to see cracks in Sterling’s mental health. Ogden is brilliant at creating this flawed character, who on the outside appears to be a pillar of strength, and who an entire crew is relying on (including Banks his First Officer – who even through their mental link, hasn’t worked out that Sterling has issues), but deep underneath, he is suffering from PTSD and potentially several other stress induced issues. Ogden’s Character work is exceptional, from Sterling, to Banks, Shade, Razor, Keller and especially Admiral Griffin, all of them are so well done (Especially Griffin, who is absolutely brilliant, and easily a favourite, as she is not only a really great storyline character, but she is also perpetually funny, adding a real touch of humour to the story). Each has a distinctive, unique personality, that really influences the story, but they also have a really interesting background, and for this story, they also have a fascinating ‘Omega’ story in their history as well. As well as the Characters, Ogden has created this extraordinary world, one that has so many multi-faceted layers to it, each with such depth, and so much detail, Ogden is so incredibly clever at creating these powerful stories that are so engaging and compelling and you can’t put down. The Combat sequences in this story are just amazing, both the ship-to-ship and the hand-to-hand. In space, Ogden creates these epic conflicts between starships, some that almost remind me of the Defiant from Star Trek Deep Space 9, as the Invictus is this compact little starship that is not only, resilient, but pacts a real punch. The other thing that packs a punch in this story is Commander Banks, with her genetically different strength, that was altered as a result of where she was born, she is significantly stronger, and tougher than everyone on the crew, as well as most of her enemies. Luckily for her, they don’t know this, and underestimate her, much to their own misfortune. This makes for some ‘interesting’ reading – some rather humorous, some, well, rather gruesome at times, but all good for the crew of the Invictus. Again, Ogden has done a fantastic job of creating Banks, and making sure she stays ‘within’ character as far as her abilities go. It adds a great layer to the story. Void Recon is a sensational action-thriller, one that once you start, you will not be able to stop. It is in incredibly intelligent, with extraordinary character work, and sensational world building. This is a gritty, and powerful story, as Sterling, Banks and the Crew of the Invictus fight not only for their lives, but those of all of Humanity as the Sa’Nerran push harder and harder into Human held space. If you like a good Mil Sci-Fi with great space battles, as well as physical combat, you will love this!

Military sci-fi that gets close and gritty but includes those massive space battles and explosions you are looking for too. Omega officers are brutally efficient in what they do - people who "accept their own darkness and grow comfortable with it" - no room for mercy or consideration for collateral damage. The enemy doesn't allow it. If you thought they were the underdogs in book one with what was revealed - wait until you see what is coming in this book! Their only hope? "a genius, brilliant beyond words, but he is also an alcoholic, drug-abusing womanizer, and a low life-life lying asshole".
I did not want to put this book down! Adrenaline fueled rush from beginning to end. There were a few sections by the end that seriously had my heart pounding. I'm also starting to suspect that for all their posturing some of these Omega officers may in fact have hearts after all. That ending was a doozy - can't wait to dive into the next book.
Book 2 in the Omega Taskforce series, definitely read these in order and when you don't have anything important to attend to.
Things are looking pretty bleak of the humans, but our hero and his crew don't know when to quit. And that makes them mankind's best and only hope.
This is book two of the series, but it works pretty well as a standalone. It is early enough in the series that you can catch up pretty quickly.
This is an intense, fast paced military SF story. The story is very well written, with a lot of depth to both the setting and the characters. The plot is intense and fast paced, with lots of twists and turns along the way that keep you on your toes and unsure what is going to happen next. I found myself intrigued by the world and drawn in from the beginning with a story that is intense, exciting and very engaging. Overall, it was a fantastic read and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Highly recommended.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout for review purposes.
Void Recon - the very name brought fear to Fleet Navy personnel
The Omega Directive is in play, meaning that the enemy was to be stopped by any and all means necessary. They must stop the Na'Serran invasion force forming at the edge of the Void. Only one ship remains of the Omega Taskforce, and new orders sent the Invictus back into enemy territory seeking the one individual who could counter the neural weapon of the enemy.
The crew of the Invictus is chewed up, spit out, patched up and rearing to get at the enemy. Only this crew, on this ship have a chance of finding the traitor responsible for the neural weapon. It's going to be a helluva fight! This is a great read!
I would like to thank the author G J Ogden for providing me access to an evaluation copy.
This is Book 2 in the series. As in the first voume, I found this book to be a very entertaining, action packed, fast read. It kept me turning pages to see what was coming next.
This is a military space-based combat science fiction story that provides a high level of reader engagement in the warship fighting sequences. Recommended as a good sci-fi galactic war quick read.
The story starts with a bang and just gets better as it goes as Sterling and his crew are hunting the void. It was fast paced, lots of action, danger and secrets to hopefully uncover. The characters and the story were good and just sucked me in just to see what was going to happen and what twists and surprises were to be had. Really enjoyed it.
G J Ogden Void Recon This is another great read from G J it will have you on tenterhooks from page one, the second book in a great series and more to come can’t wait. I have read this book as an ARC and I am leaving this review on my free will.
Action packed space warfare with the Invictus crew on another mission into the void and the Sa’nerra augmented by turned Fleet officers invade Fleet Space. It will hold your interest.
Another outstanding chapter in the Void Recon series. The action was fast-paced and the adventure was non-stop. The characters continue to grow and mature.I really like this book and I highly recommend it.
Captain Sterling and his Omega crew are again in the thick of it, as the Sa’Nerra step up there quest to win the war. Using the turned humans, they have added a new approach to there usual seek and destroy. Good story, with Sterling and Banks dynamic developing well.
Read it you won't be disappointed. I found it hard to put down every time I picked it up. Saying a anything about the book I end up giving the story away. Just try it
