The Butterflies Fly Backwards by Jani Tully Chaplin A lighthearted recollection of a family's serendipitous journey towards a new life in Corfu. It was lovely to follow this adventure with Jani, Jeremy, their family and dogs. The descriptions of all the amazing places they visited and travelled through onboard their yacht were written with such fondness and enthusiasm that it was a joy to read. They immerse themselves in the culture and daily life every time they drop anchor. Corfu becomes their home. They meet locals from all walks of life who become firm friends. In addition, Jani shares some personal, touching stories of her experiences along the way with us. I thought the addition of the photographs was a great touch. I want to thank Jani Tully Chaplin for a copy of her book to review.
A Wonderful read. It depicts what makes the places and people of North East Corfu and the Ionian Islands so, so special. I have been visiting for 40 years and this book perfectly represents what I struggle to convey about this wonderful area. Throw into the mix the life on board a yacht (a life I am totally unfamiliar with), heart warming stories along with the occaisonal tragedy, the author paints a wonderful tapestry of her experiences with the colours, sounds smells and tastes that are so familiar it makes me yearn to return. Highly recommended.
I love Jani’s flowing and descriptive writing. Her style borders on classical but with the benefit of easy reading. As someone who knows Corfu, I was captivated by her knowledge of the islands and was carried with her as she describes the beautiful places and people of this charming island. Few of us will ever get the chance to sail around the Ionian islands on our own private yacht, but reading this book, I was there with her. Bravo Jani. Five stars from me.
I have finished this book, and have also visited Greece - Corfu and Paxos and other islands. Jani's depiction of the Greeks rings so true. Her description of the fun times she has with her family and boat is excellent...
