I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Make Cute Stuff With Polymer Clay is a bright, fun and adorable book of craft ideas and projects to make with the use of polymer clay. The book has some great information at the beginning including what temperatures to use depending on the clay used and if its mixed makes of clay etc and the basic equipment you'll need. Each project has not only fabulous photographs of each stage of the make but also detailed and easy to follow and understand instructions. This would make a great book for beginners and I'm going to attempt a few of these projects with my daughter! I think they'll be perfect for mother daughter bonding time. The ones I adored most are the home home (with lights) and the sloth!
Many cute little projects with step by step pictorial instructions on how to achieve them. They do not look too difficult and so is perfect for the beginner or just anybody wanting to make some whimsical things with polymer clay.
Looking through the book, I got an inspiration on how to dress up some small mason jars. Looking forward to starting the project with the know-how from this book!
As a mom of an only child, I am always looking for fun activities to keep him engaged and off a device. Bonus points for an activity that I can enjoy, too.
I love using my hands but am decidedly NOT an artist, so assisting my child in art projects isn't always easy for me. The step-by-step instructions and uber-clear photographs in this book made these projects approachable and fun. I also really appreciated that the finished products weren't too "precious" or perfect so my son wouldn't feel like his creations paled in comparison.
We've earmarked many of the projects for future gifts for family and friends, as they make great gifts. I love that many of them had an actual purpose, like the sweet little bear trinket box. And the author's "take it a step further" suggestions allowed us to add a little twist of our own creative inspiration which was fun.
Both publisher and artist did a great job of creating an easy-to-use, clearly outlined guidebook.
I look forward to trying more of the books from this series.
I must admit, I haven’t had my hands in clay since I was a Girl Scout in grade school, but the whimsical, quirky characters and projects on the cover of this book guided me right into the heart of the adventure Shelley created. Wow! The colors! The amazing photographs of each project grabbed me.
Shelley’s story of how she accidently came across this fun medium was delightful and made each project real for me as well as doable. Much to my surprise, I was suddenly inspired and feeling confident enough to give it a try!
As I deliberated over my first project, I felt grateful for Shelley’s explanation and photo layouts of every step, making the directions so clear that there were no questions or reason for mistakes. There are explanations for mixing, attaching, fixing, baking and storage. No guessing here. Everything I needed was clearly laid out for me.
For my first project, I merrily chose the adorable flying pig pencil top. I went for a sweet little pink pig, but when I finished her, she was begging for a buddy, so a gray flying pig was born. Polymer clay is so easy to work with. What fun I’m having!
With no doubt in my mind, and Shelley’s inspiration guiding me, I have found a new love. Working with my fingers magically led to relaxation, concentration, focus, and a free mind. Better than medication! In fact, It WAS meditation for me! I am now utilizing it for clients to unwind, relax, and express themselves.
Thank you, Shelley, for your imaginative, creative mind, and the decisive narrative guiding us all. Your work is a pure delight!
Make Cute Stuff with Polymer Clay is a tutorial guide to working with polymer clay by artist/sculptor Shelley Kommers. Released 7 Dec 2021 by Quarto on their Walter Foster imprint, it's 128 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.
Virtually everyone has used polymer clay at some point. It's available at crafts and big-box retailers, by mail order, and I've even seen it at some larger grocery stores. The disconnect comes when you get your little packages of plastic home and try to make something. Even with the best intentions, none of my creations bore the slightest resemblance to the pictures I had up in my head. I needed a step-by-step tutorial, and this is a good one. The book is full of cute exuberant and colorful projects and well written tutorials to guide readers through projects to finished items (which actually look like the things they're meant to be).
I'm definitely a process based learner, so this book was perfect for me. The photographs are crisp and clear, the steps are very well delineated, and the projects are super cute and appealing (see cover). There are a wide variety of subject tutorials; florals, fantasy animals, food, pets, etc. The projects are mostly whimsical and have a younger/kid-age feel in my opinion; but could easily be adapted for more grownup projects.
This would make an amazing activity guide for scouts, church or library kid groups, or classroom art instruction. I'm a middle aged adult and I am absolutely going to use the tutorials here to make myself some charms for my embroidery scissors and needle minders. This is a wonderfully inspiring book which had my fingers itching to get started!
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes
This is a great book for ideas. If you enjoy making things with polymer clay this gives some great ideas. The projects are easy to do and the book has great pictures to show the stages that you need. I loved the idea for a fairy toadstool and the picnic basket. This book is ideal for children who want to have a go at modelling with polymer clay.
I have a lot of polymer clay and with my daughter visiting this Christmas, I believe we’ll be making some of these fun little critters and designs. The instructions cover the basics of polymer clay and the tools used and then provides step by step instructions with pictures to make some cute critters, containers and other things. Easy, peasy when someone shows you the way.
This is a wonderful book which teaches you how to make things from Polymer Clay. It would suit both children and adults. My daughter and I loved the book a lot.
The subjects in the book include: tools and materials you will require, how to mold the clay, how to mix colours, how to create different items, how to store clay and how to bake clay, A few examples of the types of items you can make are: a unicorn, a rainbow, plant pots, a trinket box and finger puppets.
The book is absolutely stunningly laid out, with beautiful, colourful photographs and easy to read, highly detailed instructions.
I highly recommend this amazing book to anyone who loves art and who would like to make beautiful objects from clay.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
The book includes twelve projects for you to get stuck into with polymer clay.
The book explains what polymer clay is (moldable soft material until baked), what tools you require, additional materials, basic shapes, mixing colours, and baking.
The twelve projects are most suited for 8-12-year-olds, with projects such as kooky aliens, pencil tops, and a rainbow mobile. Each one has easy-to-follow pictures and written instructions.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for an honest review.
This book is a mine of information about using polymer clay - from how to begin, car taken and lots of projects that start off with very easy items to make and slowly expands the skill level with bigger and more complicated projects. Great for kids and adults alike - what great fun to play with clay. There are some lovely plaques, hangings, animals, robots and much, much more - it really is a great book.
As cute as some of the creations are, I would say that this is a very basic book and would probably be more suitable for beginners or children. The bright colours and very easy shapes make the illustrations stand out and the troubleshooting sections is quite useful but I don't think this book has anything new to say on Polymer clay.
