There are parts that scream out to me. I am a daughter's daughter and though this book is a milder take on what Daughter's daughters go through in an Indian family, it's not far from reality.

Lets first gather a few background details about this book - DD sketches a handful of vivid childhood memories of Ms. Mrinal Pande the 2nd daughter of a celebrated Hindi writer - Shivani (Gaura Pant).

The memories are centered around Mrinal, her older sister Dinu(Veena) their mother and most importantly their grandmother (Ama) at Almora. Very little is actually described about the writer Shivani but when this book is read along with 'Diddi - my mother's voice' by Ira Pande (youger sister of Mrinal) it makes much more sense.

I confess to have picked this book solely for its title. Rather a nice read... a shadow of an era that is supposed to be over but which hints the reader to believe otherwise.

Excellent. I wish that she had extended the story into later in the characters lives, as more cutting commentary can be made as these girls became teenagers and adults. In the author's own words, the story is of survival, and of how courage can arise to confront fear when faced with obliteration. Two young sisters navigate the complicated landscape of family while gender is continually forced upon them. And survive, though not without cost.
