Tainted Fae #2

Dark Uprising

Rate this book
Changing the world comes at a devastating price!

As a member of Population Zero, October is ready to take on those in power who’ve done nothing to protect the planet she loves. But when the leader of her radical group proves he is willing to go to extremes to fight for his cause, October flees straight into the arms of a dangerous dark fae … the same one she accidentally blood binds to be her protector.

Doubts grow quickly about her tentative saviors on the Vermont farm, where she finds refuge. But what if the strange group of granola farmers hiding from the outside world are more dangerous than the law and politicians hunting for her?

With few places to turn, October must rely on the protection of someone she thinks is crazy. Because if what he claims is the truth of who he is and the world of the fae is real, she’s got a lot more problems than belonging to a murderous domestic terrorist group who thinks she betrayed them while being hunted by the police for questioning over a murder.

This action-packed second installment to The Tainted Fae series is impossible to put down. I found myself turning pages, anxious for what might happen next while also dreading the end because I knew it wouldn’t truly be the end.

Much like in the first book, for which I also received an ARC, I found myself completely enamoured with Bramble, the brownie. Every description of him was endearing, whether it was his giggle that “sounded like beetles clicking combined with the melody of a strange bird” or comparing him to “an acid trip wooden version of a parrot” perched on Riasg’s shoulder. I imagine it could have been difficult to bring an inanimate object to life, but Autumn Birt does so quite adeptly, making Bramble seem almost human in his interactions with the other characters. When Riasg found out that Bramble wanted to email Gavin back in Scotland, he was shocked to find she had an email address and access to the internet. “‘What century do you live in?’ Bramble’s laughter faded to disbelief. ‘What were you going to do, scry her?’ The little creature fell over onto the stone counter with the clatter of dropped sticks.” Even being a sarcastic little brat, he’s still adorable.

Riasg was the main character of the previous book and he features heavily in this one, but the main focus is on October. She finds herself recuperating from an injury on Wind River, where she meets an odd cast of characters. Fed herbs to help her heal, as well as to help shield her from the knowledge of the magic at the farm, “October felt she was on a never-ending stoner trip. Every time she gathered her thoughts, they scattered, dissolved, or evaporated.” I thought this was a wonderful description of that feeling when you’re trying to understand and make sense of something beyond your comprehension and cannot even formulate the questions needed to clarify your thoughts.

A new and significant character appears: Raven. This description is so clever: “The raven was darker even than the nighttime storm. He resembled a hole cut out of the world.” There is something very ominous about his appearance, despite the fact that he claims he wishes the residents of Wind River no harm. He seems unusually wise and possibly benign, but I still can’t get past the feeling of foreboding.

I spent a good portion of the book wondering when Sgleó might begin to pivot and focus on healing. He spent a good deal of time sitting around, communicating with the local fairies and pixies, studiously ignoring Bramble and wanting very little to do with October. When he finally decides to be proactive, the transformation and means of achieving it is surprising and amazing.

I’m impressed by the world-building and character development in this book. Descriptions like this one painted a vivid picture involving multiple senses: “The air pulsed against her skin and danced on her tongue with the snap of tart bubbles bursting.” Or this one: “The taste was sunlight and fragments of memory of his dear, lost homeland.” Meanwhile, characters were relatable and believable, despite an “unbelievable” premise. I was transported into the story and never doubted the “reality” presented. I can’t wait to read the next installment.

I’ve been reading Autumn’s books for a few years now. I think I started reading her around 2015 and I’m not sure which I like better, her epic fantasy or this new series of urban fantasy with Celtic and mythological edges. I must say it’s a very close race but I'm really enjoying this new urban fantasy very much. Autumn is a master at world building regardless of the genre. In her epic fantasies she must create a whole new realm and world with characters she has imagined to live in those realms and worlds. In this urban fantasy she has chosen to use the modern world and known locations and has brilliantly inserted these wonderful preternatural and mythological characters in with the humans in those locations. I imagine myself riding in a hot air balloon and watching the story unfold below me as I drift along and observe. I’m not really sure why that is but for some reason this series puts me in that frame of mind and I’m enjoying the view from high above. Book two is a flawless and uninterrupted continuation of The Tainted Fae tale. Leaving very little for the reader to do other than turn the pages, which are quickly turned, and take in this wonderful tale as you travel along paths and trails of pure unadulterated fantasy. Filled with magic and an abundance of adventure you will soon find yourself quickly falling in love with the series and the characters. I’m lucky enough to have the next book in the series all ready to read or I’d be doing my crazy dance waiting for the next installment. So, excuse me while I embark my air balloon and continue my journey with these wonderful characters.

Head Back into the world of fae, magic, and delightful twists!
Rejoin Riasg as he literally runs into more trouble just when he thought maybe he could take a breather! Meet new characters as Autumn once again transports you to her world; look deeper into who and what has been causing the magic and the fae to seep away and disappear. She wonderfully pulls you in and before you realize it, a whole day (or night!) has past and there's adulting to be done! Her characters grab onto you and stay around long after you've put the book aside and you gladly trot along side them in this adventure that one wishes would never end. Can't wait for the next book!
I was given a copy of this book for free to help edit and give an honest review. I went ahead and bought a copy to support Autumn and her great work.

Captivating and thrilling, this book will make you lose sleep
Dark Uprising is a great book, I couldn't put it down. Once you start it you need to know what happens next and I found myself up until 2am for a few nights after I told myself I would only read 1 more chapter. 8 chapters later I would look at the clock and realise I should be asleep. I didn't even notice that one chapter had ended and the next had begun. I had to know what happened next, it is that thrilling.
October finds herself in the magical world of the Fae and Autumn Birt has a wonderful way of describing that world so you feel as if you are there tight alongside October.

This book really transports you to a world of Fae and magic, I get lost in Autumns books and love the way she so easily combines our world with the Fae world. I would love to find a port into the authors world and spend the day with bramble, Soyla and the gang, it would be amazing. Did I mention the book ends on a cliff hanger.............

“Blood bound. Iron bound. It itched no matter what Riasg called it.”

Thank you to Autumn M. Birt for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Content warnings for this book: police violence, guns, shooting, murder, blood, death, animal death, car accident, brief terminal illness, brief non-consensual kissing?

In book 1, Dark Fae Outcast, we followed Riasg on his journeys with Sgleo and Bramble and the light and dark fae they encounter along the way. In this book, we are introduced to an entire cast of new characters while still involving all of the ones we grew to love in book one. The two halves of this book both read almost like entirely different stories: a human, city girl thrust into the private world of the fae versus sheltered fae meet the dangerous city life (plus a few scenes still back in Europe with a trapped Gavin).

I did not enjoy the first half of the book, but this is mostly because I did not like or relate to the new main character, October. She seemed to change her mind/opinions constantly and immediately stereotyped nearly everyone she met ("a hippy", "for invalids", "mental abilities were a bit off"). Her connection to Riasg and the fae was interesting, and I wonder whether her current romance plot may not be "end-game", but I would have still enjoyed them if they hadn't been so rushed. I also did not enjoy reading the plot related to her organization, with all of the shootings and murders.

As the second half seemed to switch perspectives more towards the fae, I enjoyed this much more and flew through it! I relished learning more about the past for Sgleo and Efflyn and was curious to learn more about Raven. The detailed imagery of the scenery and the way the fae's abilities and time travel (??) appeared in the world were great! I also enjoyed that all of the side characters of sorts from Book 1 still had their stories play out in this book. Bramble is certainly turning into a fan favorite, judging by the other reviews.

I finished this book in the middle of the night, and as I'm writing this a week later, I'm still not certain how I feel about the ending. A particular plot twist was so unexpected that I burst into laughter, but it was also uncomfortable and confusing. I found the rest of the ending to be fascinating and am curious how Book 3 will continue the plot from here.

Dark Uprising: A Fae Urban Fantasy Novel (Tainted Fae Book 2)
I love this new series. In this second book the modern world of protestors and anarchy impacts directly on the fae (basically elves) safe haven of Wind River Farm. Technology, climate change, plastics and pollution are destroying the world and killing the fae. Plastic is poisonous and addictive for the fae. Autumn M Birt's stories and world building are superb. The magic system is well thought out. I loved the brownie, Bramble. He perches on October's shoulder on the cover of the book. Ends in a cliffhanger (which I usually hate) with lives in the balance, but I will definitely get the next book.

Spoiler alert!
Fleeing police in a stolen car, activist October crashes off a country road. She stumbles into Riasg in the hidden valley and unknowingly blood binds the dark fae when she asks for help. Thus the Wind River Farm protection spells are breached. The action moves from October's revelations at magical Wind River to modern Boston. Adahy realises that the fae cannot remain hidden but need to reach out to the human world. So Riasg and Adahy accompany October to Boston to seek help to save the planet and thus the fae.

I found the actions and character of Klint, leader of Population Zero, the domestic terrorist group, hard to comprehend. The murder of Matt, the parking attendant seemed so senseless. It certainly took October by surprise. The attack on the rally. How would these murders bring people to the cause? Population Zero seemed about killing all humans, even a supporter as in Matt. I don't know whether this is an issue with the writing or if people like this exist in reality.

The fight for survival continues for October, Riasq and Adahy in Boston. Klint is searching for October as the 3 search for a way to stop the destruction of the Fae and humanity alike.
Twists and turns that takes your breath away and leaves you wanting more.

I received an ARC. This was a very enjoyable book that delves into the fae universe. It's a book I couldn't put down. Bramble is one of my favorite characters. Can't wait to see what comes next.
