Rate this book
For anyone suffering the loss of a child or a loved one, this part memoir, part self-help book provides hope and inspiration, with insights to help you navigate your path out of the dark, towards the light.

The Gifts From Losing You is a poignant chronicle that shares a family’s experience of their first year grieving the sudden loss of their only son and brother, aged 19.

Written by his mother, it is a story of personal tragedy, immeasurable love, heartbreak, and sadness, coupled with gratitude, courage, and perseverance.

Her reflections explore the themes of loss, shock, pain, acceptance, and eternal love. She focuses on how her family found a way to weave their grief into the fabric of their lives while opening their hearts and minds to the gifts bestowed on them. She discovers that deep despair and blessings can co-exist simultaneously in grief. This unique perspective has guided them in their healing, enabling them to live alongside their heartache. From her experience as a health coach, she shares the self-care practices that enabled her to cope with her devastating reality.

For anyone grieving, supporting someone grieving, or wanting to understand grief, this book is a must-read.

The author writes about her family’s experiences grieving the loss of their son and brother who died suddenly in a tragic accident in 2019. It’s an incredible tribute to him, a beautiful legacy, a love letter if you like from a mother to her son.

As the author says it is part memoir as she shares what happened the first weeks and months after her son passed and then she shares stories about him with contributions from his father and sisters. She also discusses how people grieve in such different ways, what they experience as they grieve, how to look after one another and one’s self when grieving and how to see through the darkness of despair, into some light as there can be light in amongst the dark. That is a revelation for so many who are so deep in the dark they wonder if they can ever see or feel beyond it.

On a personal note, I’m no stranger to grief, as I’ve experienced a lot of loss, and I have read a lot on the subject, trying to find a way out of the dark. The Gifts from Losing You really spoke to me as it is very personal, and while utterly devastating and sad, it also gives you hope as this family found a way to live with their grief and despair and make his passing mean something. Each day they wake up and find a way to honour their son and brother, and they have done it so fiercely and beautifully. It may seem odd to use the word hope, however for anyone experiencing grief; it is reassuring to know there is hope. Hope that you can find a way to move forward with your loss and to mourn the person who has gone but not to feel you cannot go on. There are ways to live with loss and to see the ‘gifts’ that can come from it.

I am grateful for the author’s willingness to share the deep love of family and the immeasurable grief from the loss of their beautiful son and brother. The themes of 1) gratitude and seeing gifts through the grief and sadness and 2) seeking ways to continue connecting with our loved ones who have passed resonated with me as I trudge through the grief of losing a dear special nephew SPB at 21 years old. The self care guidance was also extraordinarily helpful. Thank you Ms Green and family for your generosity of spirit in sharing your experience. I am better for learning about Patrick and his impact on the world.
