This is the 3rd part of the story where things are getting consolidated. Hence the "thrill" level is bit less but nevertheless the story is still exciting to read. Since the story is continuous, the review might be a spoiler for those who haven't read books 1 & 2 but not a spoiler for this book being reviewed. Leo is out and is now asserting himself. His violent streak is obvious and a thread to the extent that his dad is also wary of it. More of Nutsy's dream is revealed and we get to know the obstacles that might lie ahead of him. Also the time of the Fix Game has come and one is keen to find out if it ruins Nutsy as his opponents have planned. All in all a good read and can't wait to read book 4.
Fascinating insights into the New York sports gambling scene
This review applies to the four books in the series 'Four Square Miles', culminating in 'The Final Project'. Because the plot is cleverly paced to deliver a masterly dénouement in the closing pages I see little point in reviewing each part of the series separately. The plot is relentless in engaging the reader's interest and maintains a lively pace. It focuses on the sports gambling business of the protagonist Nutsy, his close partner Ladro and their local bookie associates. Readers are treated to a fascinating exposé of the criminal underbelly of the network of local bookies in New York; a realistic portrayal of how big money manipulates the sports betting business and sustains Nutsy as he forges towards his dream of an historic park. The most endearing aspect of the book is the poignant and compassionate portrayal of Nutsy as he sustains a loving bond with his wife Kathy, daughter Sammy, son N.J. et al. His acts of kindness and generosity have won him widespread respect from the wider N.Y. establishment, and from any reader I suspect. The four series novel closely equates with the hero's journey which is cleverly presented as a story of pride, love, family and a dream as pre-empted by the writer. Readers are rewarded with a fulfilling range of colloquial and representative dialogue which creates a lasting insight into the gambling scene, which is alive everywhere including the Four Square Miles.
This series needs to be a weekly TV show. I love the main character and his family, and could see this be a hit. It is somewhat comedic, with a flare for dramatic. Crime, Romance, Comedy - what more do you need in a half hour show? I’d defiantly tune in. This is book 3 in a series, and let me tell you right now, just buy them all right now. If you don’t, you’ll be left with a cliff hanger, and you will want to know what’s coming next.
