Donovan Darthe isn’t your typical grim reaper. He’s a paranormal executioner, charged with executing the worst of the worst evil paranormal creatures alongside his sandman partner Sommeil Martin.
But when oracle Adriana gives them an assignment—to kill a yeti who slaughtered a swarm of harpies—the partners realize an oracle’s magic is fallible.
That realization just might threaten the entire operation of HEX Unite, whose sole goal is to keep the paranormal world safe and secret.
When magic fails, the entire world just might fall apart.
Nicole Zoltack is a USA Today bestselling author who loves to write romances. Of course. She did marry her first kiss, after all!
When she’s not writing about knights, superheroes, or witches, she enjoys spending time with her loving husband, three energetic young boys, and precious baby girl. She enjoys riding horses (pretending they’re unicorns, of course!) and going to the PA Renaissance Faire dressed in garb. She’ll also read anything she can get her hands on. Her current favorite TV shows are The Walking Dead and Stranger Things.
This book fell in the middle for me. There were a lot of things I liked, but there were some parts that I didn't find engaging.
This is the first book I have read by the author and in this world, and I wonder if that's why I didn't connect. The story itself is fine without background, but there are a lot of references and hints about things that happened before.
What I did like: I liked that the characters weren't the usual ones. There's a grim reaper and a sandman...you don't get that every day.
The world seems interesting. Like I said, I feel like maybe I would have gotten more out of this if I were familiar with the setting from other books.
What I struggled with: I didn't really like Donovan. I wanted to, but to me his personality was all over the place. I also struggled with how often he was introspective. In general, I think that's a good thing to explore a character, but he would go off on these tangents at the worst times (like right when the action was building). And the sidebars didn't always add anything to the story, instead they were sometimes used to world build or offer information not directly related to the current situation.
I also struggled with a part of the plot. (It isn't a true spoiler, but I don't like to give any parts away usually).
Overall, I think the book is interesting and worth a read.
Donovan and Sommeil have been best buds since the academy but partners at Hex Unite for several years, so when the Oracle sends them out to kill the Yeti that murdered a flock of harpies they're all business. Until they find out that her intelligence was incorrect.... something that never happens, so what in the world is going on? With her help and the help of many other supernaturals, they set out on a mission to find out what is destroying their world and attempting to spill over into the human world too. I liked the banter between Donavan and Sommeil and the storyline very much and am looking forward to the next book in the series. I also felt this was a good introduction to the characters in Hex Unite but hope that we can get a little more insight into each of their background stories along the way, as well as more love stories. This is very much like the Justice League crossed with a Paranormal Jusitce Department.
In liked each character as each grew within the story. I can not imagine any of them being left out of the story as it was an exciting story. I can barely wait to get into the next book.
Book Review: Grim Unrest: A Mayhem of Magic World Story (HEX Unite Book 1) Author: Nicole Zoltack My Rating: 5 Stars
REVIEW This story gives us a Grim Reaper named Donovan who has basically been shunned by his family and other reapers. He is a paranormal executioner. His friends at Hex Unite hold similar positions that vary. Donovan has a crush on oracle Adriana but he begins to worry when her visions lead him and his partner Sommeil on a wild goose chase. What is going on within the walls of Hex Unite and the paranormal world itself? Can they find out together? Action-packed, and friendships grow deeper. There is a cliffhanger.
