Jennifer Darling is about to go through the change - only it's not the change she expected. Her husband has been playing cat and mouse, and soon Jennifer has a murder to solve. Yet it's all not cat and dried. Changes are happening. Is she simply hiss-terical, or will she take advantage of this new op-purr-tunity?
The prequel novella to the Paranormal Women's Fiction Cozy Mystery series, MenoPaws Mysteries, from USA Today Bestselling author, Morgana Best.
USA Today best-selling author Morgana Best survived a childhood of deadly spiders and venomous snakes in the Australian outback. Morgana Best writes cozy mysteries and enjoys thinking of delightful new ways to murder her victims.
OK, I get where emotionally abusive husbands and self absorbed adult children are horrible and can be painful triggers. But this farce takes it all to the extreme with such hilarity and with magical twists so that all one can do is laugh my sox off! No summary or spoilers because it is just too short, but as it's free most places and the rest (best) is yet to come, enjoy!
Maybe my 2* rating is a little harsh but there were so many times I thought of just giving up on the book. I may try the next book in the series as this was a short story/novella.
I cannot wait to read more, it was a hard read at times as there was so many very accurate portrayals of domestic abuse and emotional abuse. I had one question as to why her thinking patterns changed so sharply later in the book. It seemed a little forced.
The main character was quite unlikable and the cat was too much like a cat!??? with the odd human thought rather than the other way round. This prequel didnt convince me to purchase the series like I normally would.
Short, somewhat strange, and ultimately unsatisfying
I’m not really sure what to make of this book. It’s obviously setting up for a series of paranormal cozy mysteries in which the detective is (some of the time, at least) a cat. What puzzled me about this book, though, was the way that nobody in it really seemed to care about anyone else. It all felt a bit odd and superficial. It’s possible that this is in fact a very literary and clever way to capture how someone feels when they are about to turn into a cat, but I’m not entirely convinced. It seems more likely that this book was just a bit rushed.
Jennifer is caught up in menopause and, alongside the hot flashes and fuzzy thinking, she seems to be developing magical powers. This is all very disconcerting, but becomes serious when her philandering husband drops dead. Jennifer is worried that she caused it by accident, and the police have their suspicions that she deliberately poisoned him. Her ungrateful children think she’s losing her marbles but she still tries to get to the bottom of things, even though she ends up being cornered by the real killer.. The only way out is to use her unpredictable menopausal magic.
For me there wasn’t really enough of a mystery to this book. It mostly consisted of Jennifer complaining about how awful her life had become and how it would be nicer to be a cat. Nobody seemed to care that her husband James had been murdered. I don’t think I will be reading more of this series.
I really can't blame Jennifer Darling for wanting to escape! A serial cheating husband and once he died--her children were about to throw her into a nursing home!! Then she finds out that her best friend had also cheated with her good for nothing husband!!
The women in her family had powers but not until they started menopause. Well Jennifer decided that she wanted to be a cat who would be taken care of. She could do as she pleased. What better place to gravitate to then her favorite bookstore where the owner was always nice to her!
The is the MenoPaws Mysteries Prequel and if this short novella was any indication it is going to be a winner!! I will be getting and reading one or two of the full length novels as soon as I can--I really could use a laugh or four!!
In this prequel to the MenoPaws series, Jennifer finds herself having an unusual week. She has just begun to deal with “the change”. Hot flashes & insomnia are expected but when she finds herself sparking her husband, it seems a little more than just static electricity. She’s not happy with her life. She has a difficult marriage and difficult children. Sometimes she dreams of just becoming a cat. To lazily saunter around, have people feed her & groom her. What a life. In a confusing series of events that will change her life forever, an allergy and a trip to a bookstore “spark” a new beginning.
Jennifer married James just to get out of her house but he is not what he seems! After thirty years of marriage, things are about to change~ Jennifer has hit menopause and weird things are transpiring! It seems she can perform certain things just thinking them~ Her husband has cheated on her since before they were married and now, she wants a divorce! Her children are ungrateful snobs who cannot stand her! Her husband has been murdered and she is the prime suspect! What is she to do? She has on fervent wish…just one…will it be granted? This is a very funny start to a new series~ Very cozy and hilarious!
My main thought about this book is, what a horrible, horrible man. I really can’t be sad that Jennifer’s husband died. And their children are soooo nasty too!
This is a very short and good intro to Jennifer, even though it’s sad she
Good for Jennifer in that she is no longer tied to the husband who cheats on her, but bad for her that she has no one on her side.
After finding her husband with another woman, he drops dead after eating a cookie. With the police looking into cause of death, Jennifer realizes that his death leads to more complications after her offspring descend on her. Thinking to commiserate with a friend, she comes to learn that there really is no one she can trust. What she wasn't expecting after hitting menopause are her newly burgeoning gifts, and that these will help save her life.
This is a most unusual tale! From the premise through the non-stop surprises, I expected to enjoy this more; but the lead character, Jennifer, is a doormat and a dingbat, her wish at the end is childish and silly, the mystery isn't much, and the only likeable character is barely mentioned.
Jennifer is going through menopause and she realizes she is coming into her powers. Strang things happen around her and her husband drops dead. The police say it's murder and Jennifer hopes for her greatest wish and the rest is history. Funny and some of the book is very realistic

I liked reading this book because it was entertaining and intriguing at the same time. Jennifer is having trouble with the menopause and is fed up with her life. I loved how she got of her boring life.
I love prequels, especially when the backstory is crucial to the series. In this case not only is it crucial, it is both a shocking and funny short story. It certainly whetted my appetite to start the series. Very well done!
Interesting concept, woman enters menopause and developed super powers and ends up turning herself into a cat! She does use her super powers to find her husbands murder though. I am interested to seeing how the first novel progresses.
Best new series for women 40 pls and who loves cats
I laughed out loud and could relate to going through menopause. Looking forward to reading more in this series. Best new series for women 40 plus years and a love of cats.
This is an enjoyable read and explains the backstory of an important character in Best's Meno-Paws Mysteries. I believe reading Book 1 of the series before reading this prequel is the correct sequence.
I could identify with the main character because I have said to my dogs and cats "I wish I was a dog or cat and had an owner like me". I read this so fast because it's a novella and I want to read more in this series.
An introduction to Jennifer who has an awful family a horrid husband who is murdered, she is suspected but with her new found magical menopause powers she has turned into a cat and find refuge in a book store what better place to be a cat.
totally cute coming into powers story. Anyone facing life agitations, followed by a murder... who wouldn't want to become invisible? What better than a fuzzy snuggling cat? Definitely a book not to be missed!
I like the idea of a woman coming into her powers with menopause and I felt for Jennifer in the first half of this short prequel. However, the second half, after she becomes a cat, is boring. There is nothing unexpected.
This prequel novella is a really fun read. I found myself laughing out loud over some of the antics. With such appalling children I am not surprised Jennifer preferred to be a cat! This is the first book I have read by Morgana, but it won’t be the last.
A bit of fun to listen to for and hour or so. The main character is put upon by everyone in her life and thinks life would be better as a cat. She finds her true calling when she hit menopause. A nice bonus for a pre series teaser.
The story wasn’t bad the Aussie words make you think about what they mean. I’m Canadian so a lot of the words are the same so I get the meaning. It was a good read. I’ll probably read the next one.
This book had me from the beginning. I laughed and felt sad for the character. While I was reading I had more and more things in common with the character Jennifer. Great writing. It was very enjoyable ❤️😊
