Gaspard

Prix Goncourt 1915.

Written in 1915 and awarded France's highest literary prize, the Prix Goncourt, in that same year, "Private Gaspard" (just "Gaspard" in French) is the story of a happy-go-lucky French recruit sent to the Western Front in World War I. Gaspard's two short tours on the front convey the grim reality of the French/Belgian front. But most of the story line occurs away from the front lines - first in the soldiers' staging in Normandy, later in a convalescent hospital, still later at and near a chateau used to house invalid soldiers, and at the close, in Gaspard's home of Paris. In this manner, the book provides a portrait of France as a nation at war moreso than merely a soldier's story. Despite the horrors of the war, the book captures France's sense of higher purpose ("...nobody will deny that we were the ones who gave them [the German enemy] what was coming to them!") and conveys an optimistic and patriotic outlook that might have been less exuberant if written a few years further into the war.
The story draws from experiences of the author, Rene Benjamin, who was wounded at the front and recuperated in a hospital in the Loire Valley where he drafted the book.
