Brynn Finley is back for another adventure in this second installment of the A Mermaid in Middle Grade series. It is the second semester of her first year in middle school, and Brynn is thrilled that her best friend Jade will be in her magic class. This term, the mer-kids will be learning all about how friendship can amplify the spells they are learning. It seems only natural that Brynn and Jade be partners in magic class since they have been friends since they were mer-babies. However, when Jade’s mother’s prized necklace goes missing and Brynn is the prime suspect, Jade is forbidden from interacting with Brynn at all. It is up to Brynn to find the missing necklace, clear her name, and protect the humans from the sea witch Phaedra. Lucky for Brynn, a mer-boy named William Beach enters her life and together they learn about what friendship really means.

Middle grade readers who are transitioning from beginning chapter books to longer ones will appreciate the accessibility of this story. Short chapters couple with familiar word choice to make each scene in the book flow easily without being overwhelming to an independent reader. Though there are no illustrations, the writing conjures images within the mind of the reader because of its specificity and detail. Formulaic and predictable in design, the books in this series will help newly independent readers grow more confident in their reading abilities. As the second book in the series, the beginning reminds readers of the events of the first installment in a well-balanced way, supporting the narrative rather than getting in its way. Much like the Harry Potter series, it is up to Brynn and her friends to use the magic skills they learn in school to bring the evil sea with Phaedra to justice—although adults do help from time to time. The story is peppered with facts about sea creatures and sea life, increasing readers’ knowledge outside the context of a nonfiction book. Middle grade children who are fans of magic, friendship, and mermaids will enjoy reading about Brynn Finley’s adventures in the A Mermaid in Middle Grade series.
