Andher Nagari

Rate this book
Written by Bhartendu Harishchandra, this short play was written and performed the same day(!) at the Dashashwamedh Ghat in Benaras, which also makes one of the first 'nukkad natak's in Hindi.

A mahant with his two disciples reaches the town of 'Andher Nagari' where everything costs 'taka ser' (a penny for a pound), whether you buy flour or fruit or sweets. There is no distinction among anyone or anything, including truth and lies. One day, a wall collapses and kills a goat. What ensues is a chaotic mess when the corrupt people and a foolish king try to dispense justice.

This play is said to be Bhartendu Harishchandra's satirical take on the British rule in India.
