Unfortunately, The Core 3 Healthy Eating Plan is not very good for two reasons.
First, I took nutrition in college so believe me when I say this book reads like a textbook. It is filled with useful facts but as dry as a bone. Don’t read this in bed unless you are looking for a sleep aid.
Second, the author appears to hate people who are trying to lose weight. There is fat-shaming throughout the book. Those people are the audience for her book. Does anyone else see a problem here?
The Core 3 Healthy Eating Plan is not recommended unless you are a person who is already thin but has insomnia. 1 star!
Thanks to Adams Media and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

"And without a doubt, it is easier to be body positive when you're in a smaller body."
I'll take "Completely Missing the Point" for $1000, Alex...
This lovely chestnut (said without irony or caveats) is actually in the "Signs of an Unhealthy Body Image" section. Gee, I wonder where people are getting toxic messaging that leads to body image issues?
I'm not at all opposed to people wanting to live their healthiest lives, or even wanting to lose weight, for a myriad of reasons--I voluntarily picked up a book about healthy eating, after all. But body positivity is about honoring, respecting, and caring for your body regardless of what size and shape it happens to be.
I find it so disingenuous to have statements like this buried in the section that's ostensibly supposed to be about improving one's health and not measuring worth on the scale. Unfortunately, reading this makes me mistrust the author's motivations and perspective to the point where I'm no longer willing to explore the rest of their ideas.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review.

As a perpetual seeker of relationship strategies surrounding diet and nutrition, I was hopeful that I may gain some inside into my struggles reading The Core 3 Healthy Eating Plan. It sounds simple enough, right? Maybe 3 bullet points to comprehend and move forward incorporating healthy changes into my life? Wrong. This reads like a textbook and quickly brought me back to all those years in nursing school, decades ago. While the author took great care to cover many aspects of nutrition, I just couldn't stick with it very long and absorbed very little information. Unfortunately, I didn't feel drawn into this book as it seems to overlook opportunities for connection with the reader.
Many thanks to Adams Media and Netgalley for this ARC (all opinions expressed in this review are authentically mine).

I liked the idea of 3. It makes things a little more simple and we all want simplicity when it comes to healthy eating, right? I just had a really hard time slogging through all of the information. It wasn't engaging, it wasn't exciting, and I didn't feel ready to incorporate the ideas given in this book.

I found this book so refreshing! I appreciated the focus on health and well-being and knowing I was getting real, science-backed advice from a dietician. I also loved the author's reassuring voice. I have struggled with weight for years, and I think some of the restrictive, elimination diets distorted my relationship with certain foods. I love that this book explains WHY our bodies NEED carbs, protein, and fats and then provides helpful charts that even include how much fiber is in certain foods. It was also helpful to understand my Eater Archetype--it has helped me to become more conscious of some of my habits and to be more mindful. Best of all, the author acknowledges that the plan needs to fit into your lifestyle and offers ways to exchange carbs for a treat or glass of wine. And it was so helpful to be able to customize for my particular body/weight and for exercise. This plan is actually sustainable and I LOVED that the recipes were not only EASY but also interesting and delicious! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to lose weight in a healthy, lasting way.

This book is an incredibly refreshing take on nutrition. I've read my fair share and find them mostly to be forced, unrealistic, and generally overwhelming with advice. I loved how the author gave the reader options to personalize the plan based on goals: if weight loss is not your goal, you can customize a plan to eat healthier.
I also have never seen a weight loss plan that incorporates frank discussions about the relationship between food and body image. It made me realize that eating healthier is at once more complex and simpler than I thought.
I read the other reviews before purchasing this and it's interesting that so many people have such different interpretations of the same book. In my opinion, the author was not saying body positivity is only reserved for small bodies but the exact opposite. People in smaller bodies probably don't understand how hard it is to stay positive in a larger one. I also missed the "fat-shaming" that other reviewers claim, especially as the author made it clear you don't need to lose weight to be healthy and happy.
Overall, I highly recommend the book. It wasn't just a candid look at the relationship between food and our personal struggles; it was an honest, wholehearted take on how we approach a simple everyday activity that is anything but!

The basis for this book is eat 3 servings of protein and whole grains a day plus unlimited whole veggies, do 3 hours of exercise a week, etc. All of the food should be healthy whole food with one little serving of a treat or alcohol a day. The servings are smaller than you think and there are some low carb, gluten free, very healthy recipes at the end. Almost all of the text is just dry nutritional information that I already knew, and the plan is basic (somewhat depressing) common sense. Eat healthy real food. Exercise. Limit fast carbs substantially. Get lots of fiber, healthy fats and healthy protein. We all kind of already know this, but this book uses the number three a lot.

I found this book to be incredibly helpful and refreshing. There is so much contradictory information out there about how to lose weight and live a “healthy” lifestyle. This book helps break everything down and bring nutrition and eating back to the simplest level. It encourages you to find your healthy weight without prioritizing weight loss too much. Anyone who has tried to lose weight knows how frustrating it can be. This book helps to take away any of the pressure and negativity that can come with feeling like you need to lose a few pounds.

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed learning about the different macros and some psychology behind all this. But to boil it down…there is so much information out there that is contradictory and confusing. I’ve decided that Core 3 helps me plan and simplify all the mixed messages. It makes it, well, digestible! No this is not an exciting and engaging book. It’s not meant to be. It is meant to teach you how to start making nutrition a lifestyle change.
