Rate this book
Money is the lifeblood of the economic system and the way we function as a society. Most of us devote 8-12 hours a day seeking to make money and worry about it, trying to determine how much we earn to spend or invest. But what is the underlying concept of money? Is it a piece of paper with pretty pictures that dictates its concept? Is it what the authorities describe? Or is it what you and I decide as a marketplace participant? The Neolithic Revolution gave rise to early human civilization around 12,000 years ago but did it gave rise to the concept of money during that time as well? How did people use money during the early BC era? Who used to control the supply of money within a country, and what forms of money were used? Did Egyptians used paper money to build the Pyramids? How did we evolve from gold coins to paper money? Was there a high volume of frauds when we evolved from paper money to plastic money (credit cards)? Did people find internet banking secure in the 1990s? And what in the world are cryptocurrencies? What is a financial market? Are stock markets the only form of financial market? What are bonds? How do banks trade currencies, and what’s their role in the financial system? Are central banks and commercial banks the same type of institutions? Is having debt really an issue? Living in a world where money is a constant that one works for, it is important to become aware of what constitutes the participants that make up the financial system that governs money control. What caused the Great Depression of 1929? What caused the Great Recession of 2007? What is the role of central banks and financial institutions in a recession? What is Bitcoin? Is Bitcoin the future of money? What is Ethereum? Is Ethereum the future of money? What are smart contracts? Is Blockchain technology the future or just a fad? PROTOCOLS OF MONEY will provide a detailed chronological overview of the evolution of money. From the Barter System to Gold. From Gold to Coins. From Coins to Paper Money. From Paper Money to Plastic Money. From Plastic Money to Digital Money. From Digital Money to Cryptocurrencies. The book will provide all the answers regarding the origin of the concept of money. Although I don't typically read finance-related books, or for that matter hardly any non-fiction, I was interested in seeing how this history of the evolution of money proceeded. I was pleasantly surprised.

Since the author mentioned Bitcoin from the get-go, I figured this would end up being a pitch for something the Shiv Mehta was marketing. Not so. Also the book ended with notes and history concerning cryptocurrency and the like, there was no big push for Bitcoin or any other digital type currency. The author did end with a vote in favor of digital as the future, it wasn't like a grand press sell.

Meantime, I enjoyed the history lesson, and the associated learning curve. It provided a break for all the research I'm currently engaged with concerning solar powered energy. But a note of warning to all readers. Mehta seems very knowledgeable concerning the Protocols of Money. If you aren't really into deep-level historical facts - this assuming that Mehta could prove his words true - this book might overload your patience.

I give five stars for details, writing style, and educational value. But most of all, I give it five stars because it doesn't drown the information in a self-promotional binding.

Maybe you too will want to give it a try.

Interesting, informative and a little sloppy

There is a lot of great information in this book and a lot of valuable history and conceptual groundwork to help people understand money as a concept, a toolset and a legacy. From the earliest barter systems to the most recent crypto-currency developments, it’s all in here.

My main complaint is that the book is poorly written and edited (particularly in the beginning). In the early parts of the book, some of the writing is difficult to follow–almost as if it’s a poor translation from another language–with numerous improper sentence constructions. Throughout the text, there are many needless repetitions of information and concepts in a way that makes the book less readable and enjoyable.

All that noted, there’s still enough interesting insight, history and thinking here to make this worth reading.

Very comprehensive

This is a very comprehensive book that covers almost all aspects of money tracing its history from the concept of value to the current crypto commodities.
The authors have done a great job of mixing the key historical events with the key concepts that emerged over time and how the world was influenced by them. Reading up on the removal of gold standard, the Great depression, role of central banks with the Great recession was very insightful.
The book ends with very detailed explanation of the emergence of cryptocurrencies, alt-coin bubble and ends with how the future of money may look like. This has a lot of detail but is written in a very accessible manner so that people with no economics or financial background can also understand the most important concepts around money.

This book is all about money (everyone's favorite subject). It does not discuss how to make money, but it talks about the history and concept of money. It looks at how money has changed, from the barter system, to gold, to coins, and then to paper money. After that, there was plastic money, and now, there is cryptocurrency.

The author attempts to answer many common financial questions. What is a financial market? How do banks trade currencies? What are bonds? The author also looks at some recent financial history, including the causes of the Great Depression and the Great Recession. The spends a lot of time explaining cryptocurrency.

This book doesn't get into investing, but, for anyone considering it, reading this book is a very good idea. It may take some patience on the part of the reader, but it is full of information, and does a good job explaining the world of money.

Fascinating Look at Money

This is something everyone should know. I’ve never taken the time to actually think about the meaning or definition of money. This is a well-researched deep dive into the meaning and history of money. Valuable knowledge for everyone to have.

All about Money.

This is a well compiled, detailed and super informative book on money. The history of just about every type of money, every physical form of money, so much that it can be used as a “money almanac”.

Best Financial Book Written For Modern Time

The financial words flow with an explanatory image. Placed in segments that are easy to understand. The book comes to its conclusion quickly, but not without positive ideas to make one walk away fulfilled.

Maybe it is just me. It gets so interesting once we unwrap the recession and go through what Bitcoin is and where it is going. Overall, a worthy read!

This really is an interesting topic. I found myself more engaged here than in some fiction books. There is a good story woven throughout, and when you really think about it, what is money anyway?

Interesting if a little complex

An interesting look at the history of money and how it works in our society today. It’s not a light read but it’s interesting.
