You can find my full review for this as well as other books on my blog here

It's my spot on the blog tour today for The Takers and Keepers and first of all I want to thank the author, publisher and Random Things Tours for my copy of the book. I really enjoyed it and it is a pleasure to take part, share my thoughts and promote this brilliant story.

So for those of you who don't know the first thing about this book let me tell you that it's pretty dark, darker than I actually expected it to be.

It is all about the sinister underworld of human trafficking.

Men, women and families abducted, bought and sold and kept underground, not seeing the light of day for years and in some cases where children are actually born in these underground dungeons and have never known anything else.

This story feels so real.

The author makes it sound like it's based on true events rather than a fictional idea and that is terrifying.

I was completely absorbed and unable to put it down.

I really enjoyed Allen's character and found him really down to earth and easy to like. I wasn't completely sold on any of the other characters to be quite honest but the focus wasn't really on anyone else and I was ok with that.

Something I would have liked would be to learn more about Allen's past as the author touches upon it but doesn't go into great detail about the things he's done and what he's been through.

At less than 200 pages this is a fast read but that is not a bad thing. In those few pages the author is able to create tension, atmosphere and genuine fear.

It is thought-provoking and certainly something that people don't talk enough about in the media.

I rated this book 4 stars and I think all it needed to reach 5 was a little extra padding. I'd have liked to know more about Allen and I would also have liked to know more about Jennifer and what happened to her.

Everything was really fast paced which is great but I think this could have been excellent with a bit more detail.

Having said that it was a solid read and an excellent introduction to this new author for me and I would recommend this book to any fan of thriller and suspense.

Thanks to Anne at Random Tours & Hookline Books for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis:
Where do the disappeared go? The girls and women who vanish, seldom to resurface. Allen Kimbo, a freelance reporter, believes there is a network of men who guard their "taken" and keep the silence that surrounds such deeds. An email lures him to Eastern Europe, to a meeting of the Takers and Keepers. His girlfriend, Emily, pleads with him not to go. In Belgrade more is revealed than he had thought possible. Back at home, Emily is missing.

Thoughts: I found this book to be a slow burner, but it did start to get interesting! I’d never really thought about people that have been captured and kept by other people. The author describes it really well, it sounds frightening and something I can’t begin to imagine. You really felt the fear. Once the story gets going, I found it hard to put down. The atmosphere was just so creepy!

The Takers and Keepers by Ivan Pope is a story that revolves around human trafficking. A dark and disturbing tale of very despicable acts. Admittedly, this is a hard one to read because of subject matter, but the writing is absolutely excellent.

This feels very real. Like this was based on true events, which makes it that much more scary. This is one of those crime stories that can upset some readers, so just know, this isn’t light.

I enjoyed it though. “Enjoy” is probably not the right word, but I’m sure you know what I mean. This was a very well written crime novel that kept me invested and on the edge of my seat.

Powerful and thought-provoking! Recommended for sure.

The Takers and the Keepers is about the dark underworld of human trafficking.

Here, journalist Allen Kimbo is investigating in Eastern Europe and what he finds is this horrific trade, which treats desperate people like nothing more than livestock.

This is not an easy read even for those of us who like our crime fiction on the darker side, this is as dark as it comes, all the more terrifying as this is really happening every day.

I found this to be a compelling thriller that is heart rending and thought provoking and it will stay with me for a long time.

Thank you to Random Things Tours for the opportunity to be part of this blog tour, for the promotional material and an eARC of The Takers and Keepers.

Well, this was a dark one!

Journalist Allen Kimbo is following a lead in Eastern Europe that is connected with people trafficking - both the traffickers themselves and their victims, 'the disappeared'. As he investigates deeper will things hit a little closer to home - we'll, I'm not going to tell you that am I.

People trafficking is a terrible thing and this book will open your eyes even more to just how bad - honestly, at times it was hard to remember that this is a work of fiction. The author really knows his stuff and I applaud him for that as doing the research must have been an awful time.

So, a dark read but, at just under 200 pages, one that is worth your time if you have the stomach for it.

This dark novel is a tale of a journalist's obsession with and exploration of the world of human trafficking. London-based journalist Allen Kimbo ponders what happens to the thousands of girls and women who go missing each year, never to be heard of again.
He starts exploring some cases of women who have disappeared. The title of the novel, The Takers and Keepers, refers to a seamy side of humanity that abducts females and keeps them hidden for years in dark underground spaces. Some are impregnated and give birth there to children who never see the light.

Much of the story is told from Allen's perspective, probing and investigating. Parts are told from the perspective of certain individuals who have been taken and kept underground. Allen is given a lead which leads him to Eastern Europe, to Bucharest, where seamy characters abound. He makes contact with one of the ringleaders of the Takers and Keepers and is snatched and kept underground himself.

Meanwhile back in London his girlfriend Emily has disappeared. Has she also been taken? Will she ever reappear?

This is a thought-provoking novel which sheds some light on the human trafficking which occurs regularly worldwide but is ignored by most of society. Although the topic is hard to come to grips with, Ivan Pope has written an insightful exploration of one aspect of this topic.

Thanks to Bloodhound Books for providing me with an Advance Review copy of this novel.

In this story we are taken by author Ivan Pope into the dark underworld of human trafficking. I say story as I had to keep reminding myself that this was a fictional tale as it felt as though it could be documented from real life events.
We follow protagonist Allen Kimbo who is a journalist and has an unnatural fascination with the people traders in Belgrade and closer to his home London.

I found myself ploughing through this story as it was very realistically and well written of only around 200 pages in length. I would definitely recommend this eye opener. I only didnt give it 5 stars as I felt there were still some loose ends when the book came to a close. I could certainly have read a few more chapters to bring it to a more fitting end.

The Takers and Keepers by Ivan Pope was an excellent book from start to finish, however it was very dark and sometimes hard to read so be warned. This book was less that 200 pages and it felt like it was happening now. It could be!!!

When a freelance reporter Allen suspects girls and women are being taken in an underground human trafficking operation. He travels to Eastern Europe to investigate, whilst in Eastern Europe his girlfriend back home in London disappears…

Where is she?

Who took her?

Is she still alive?

WoW this book was full of twists and turns and was so good. Shame it was under 200 pages bit well worth a read and I highly recommend it, Especially as Ivan is a new author to me.

I struggled with this book to be honest, it was a dark read but those are my favourite type of stories, I just found the book a bit tedious.
So, the premise was really interesting and the first half of the book was, for me five stars but then the last half was just, uninteresting.
It seemed rushed and all of a sudden far fetched and then it was over with no real explanation or satisfactory outcome.
Can’t say the characters drew me in either.
That said though, the style of writing was good and the pace of the novel was just right, such a shame the end of the book didn’t hold its own to the beginning.

This is my first book by this author which I enjoyed reading from beginning to end. I look forward to seeing what is next for this author. This is a well written story about human trafficing and has plenty of suspense. I enjoyed how the author used details to make the story realistic and hard to put down. The characters pull you into the story from the start and keep you turning pages fast to the end. I enjoyed watching their growth that made the story easy to read. The twists and turns had me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen next. I enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it.

Takers and Keepers is about the very dark world of human trafficking.

While it’s only 200 pages, there were moments I needed to put the book down and walk away. It’s hard to imagine that this is real life and happens every day all over the world.

It was heartbreaking, thought provoking and exhausting in the sense that these people are basically gone without a trace and there really isn’t anything you can do.

I went into this book thinking it would be like one of my “typical” thriller or true crime reads that I enjoy. The writing was excellent but in the end it just made me so sad.

Thank you Bloodhound Books for the eARC of this for my honest review.

Devastating Thriller

Not for the naive or fans of cozy mysteries, this uncompromising deep dive into a darker far corner of human trafficking is well researched and heartbreaking. Genuine despair swirls in the fog of hope with which one reads. If this topic is new to you, this story will change how you look at the world. If you’re acquainted with the horrors of trafficking, this story will outrage and enrage you. Devastating facts underpinning the fiction make this an important thriller. Recommended only for the strong. / Gene Stewart.

This was quite a slow burn, dark thriller which focussed around the world of human trafficking.

I think because this was such a sensitive topic and the investigation was quite intense and gritty at times, I struggled to race through this one and had to keep coming back to it over a few sittings.

I quite liked the premise of the storyline and the writing style presented it well, journalistic in style at times. I just found that it didn't quite grip me and have me on the edge of my seat, which I love with thrillers.

The characters were relatable and well developed through the story but I can't say that I really connected with any of them. But I'm wondering if I'd maybe have a better connection had I read this at the speed I would normally read.
Maybe I'll give this another go in the new year when I'm not in a light and festive reads mood.

I'll update my review if I do give it another read.

A thought provoking story about a topic many aren’t familiar with makes this relatively quick read something that may stay with you for a long time. As an extreme traveler (75% of year) I took part in a Human Trafficking Awareness Certification course and much of what I learned in that breaks away from the stereotypes of what human trafficking is and is what the author built a realistic story around as well. As uncomfortable as it may make us as readers this is a book that should get more attention, that while fiction, raises awareness as well.

It’s set in the disturbing world of trafficking, the main character is relentless in his pursuit of the people who are gaining from the misery of others and by doing so puts himself at risk, it gets muddled occasionally as it’s unclear who is telling the story and while the ending is realistic, it doesn’t feel concluded so unless the author is planning to write a second story to continue on, the reader will be left guessing.

A dark thriller which started off well and took the reader through a dark and seedy world from London to Eastern Europe. I did find the second half of the book hard going and at times was somewhat confused as to the identity of characters telling the story - this probably could have been more clearly signposted.

I received a free copy of this book through ARC Bloodhound Books - thanks! I have given an honest review.

Quite a slow start - up to half way through I had to will myself to keep going. The last half was better. I was confused by the swapping between narrators at times and there didn’t seem to be a conclusion to the book. Even if it was just “Emily? - she’s still there. Alicia - she’s …”
Interesting but not a favourite of mine.

Quite an interesting book about the underground world of kidnapping.
The book reminded me of the movie Taken and the book Room.
A quick read.
There were a few times I was left in a state of wonderment as to who was narrating the story, but it was still understandable.

What happened to Emily?

While there were some excellent moments of suspense the book folded abruptly without explaining what happened to a major character. It was another interesting facet of human trafficking, however and that's my interest to explore .

I found this extremely disturbing to read, as it goes into dark detail of human trafficking situations. The narrative changes almost to ‘documentary’ style at times, give background information (that I sometimes felt was too much) but the relationships and development of characters was interesting

I received this book for free from Bloodhound Books.

This was a fictionalized account of a horrifying, all too real reality.

It was very dark.

I would give this five stars but I felt like the ending was too abrupt. Other than that, this was a very good and absorbing book.

Really enjoyed this until the end!

Goodness, well written BUT why did the end feel so rushed?? This story line is great! But could have been soooo much better if the loose ends weren’t so quickly tied up.

Well written and full of descriptions yet a bit much. Seemed like a lot of pointless information at times which dragged on or storylines were left open. The book does not wrap up well at the end.

This was really dark and a hard read, I had to take breaks from reading it but I am glad that I read it as it was a good and well developed novel, just really hard to read (from the topic point of view).
This won't put me off reading more books by this author but I will be more prepared.

I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.

This psychological thriller will leave you wondering about every missing person poster, and news article you have ever seen. The author takes you into the dark underworld of missing persons and explores what happens to those who are never found. I found myself forgetting that this was a work of fiction and was left with a very heavy heart.

The Takers and Keepers was my introduction to Ivan Pope. I was not sure what to expect. Ivan Pope’s writing is detailed and specific, making it easy to keep track of the story. It is deep and emotional, making it hard to remember that you are reading a work of fiction.
Freelance reporter, Allen Kimbo, has heard rumours about missing people being kept alive, prisoners to a network of twisted men who take pride in the control they have over their keepen. When he receives an anonymous email inviting him to visit Europe and see some of the keepen for himself – nothing can stand in his way. Has he finally discovered the story he has been looking for or is there more at play than he realises?
Allen Kimbo’s hunt for the keepen left tears in my eyes. The detailed descriptions of what these people are forced to endure, hearing a keepen tell her story, sharing her feelings left a lump in my throat. The author draws such a colourful picture I was left wondering how closely this story touched his own life.
The characters in this book are mostly damaged people. Even Allen Kimbo has a past that leaves you intrigued. The author never gives you the full details of Allen’s past, but there is something there that makes it clear that there is more to him than meets the eye.
Jennifer, a young woman who re-appeared after being kidnapped at the age of fifteen had my heart pounding. This character’s personality was up and down like a roller coaster ride. The things she said and did make no senses at all – which I would imagine is exactly how someone who has been held captive would react. The author did an absolutely marvellous job creating Jennifer – I loved her.
Yep, this one is on my loved list. I raced through this book in three days.
Psychological thriller enthusiasts will find themselves loving this book – I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a nail-biting, gripping tale.

The Takers and the Keepers: Where do the disappeared go? By Ivan Pope is exactly at the title suggests, a dark and disturbing story. Ivan Pope has written a tale that shows us the horrific underworld trading of human trafficking. He doesn't hold back and the realism in this book makes me wonder if this is based on true accounts, or if he is just a flipping good researcher and writer!
A story in which the main character Allen Kimbo a freelance reporter is lured to Eastern Europe following a lead about the Takers and the Keepers, the Takers being human traffickers and 'the disappeared'. These being the victims of the trafficking. As the story develops and Allen starts to dig deeper into this horrific trading that is so prevalent of our times, he realises that he will not come out of this unscathed.
What a book! This is one of the hardest hitting stories I have read. It may not be an overly big book but Ivan Pope has done more than scratch the belly of the underworld in this brutal tale. As I said the story seems so real and the situation so terrible. People being treated like animals from a farm and to be honest I think the animals are treated with more compassion than the poor trafficked people. I feel these type of topics are ones that need highlighting and being kept in people's minds, as these things are easily swept under the carpet and forgotten about.
Very well done to Ivan Pope for bringing this compelling and immersive story to the fore, as heart-rending as it is...it needs talking about. A thought provoking and heartbreaking book that I will easily be recommending to others.

First, I want to thank Ian Pope, Hookline Books and Random Things Tours for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

Ivan Pope’s The Takers and Keepers is unlike any missing person case book I ever read prior! If you follow my reviews you know that I am all for a good abduction story!

This book is for all those kept in the darkness and those who believe they can never escape.

Allen, his career choice and his storyline I found incredibly fascinating. He is one of the main reasons I was so hooked on the storyline. Allen was a writer who wrote about abductees, the missing, the lost, and prisoners who disappeared from this world. I loved hearing all about how he got started in the business to where he was now. He had an interesting story to tell

Emily, his girlfriend who was a teacher of children didn’t care for his line of work. She cracked me up when she mentioned Osama bin Laden was hiding in a cave somewhere.

Another storyline that really interested Allen was offered to write a book about a girl by the name of Jennifer who went missing when she was 12. That storyline boggled my mind as a lot of things just didn’t add up to me on her end. It was a hot story to tell as everyone was interested in her case.

Even though I loved Jennifer’s storyline I didn't care for her character.

There was a dynamic climatic twist that happened that affected someone Allen loved deeply.
