Orphan Ann Gilmore wants more from life than her present employment can offer her.
As a scullery maid in one of New York’s finest properties she finds herself bottom of the pile. Her hours are long and tedious, not to mention the wrath of housekeeper Mrs. Thompson who would think nothing of giving her a clip around the ear for having a grain of salt out of place.
With little formal education in the orphanage, to her shame, Ann has never learned to read or write.
