Kwame, the son of a tribal chief, wants more from life than can be found in his small West African village. Working as a houseboy at the management residence of a foreign-owned gold mine, he listens to the conversations of the residents and fantasizes about one day traveling the world himself. But after mysterious deaths and disappearances are blamed on the revenge of jungle spirits, Kwame overhears something that he wishes he hadn't. Unable to ignore what has happened, he becomes entangled in a web of theft, murder and a political power struggle that will forever change his life, and the lives of everyone around him. This is the large print edition of Spirits' Gold, with a larger font / typeface for easier reading.

I like international thrillers so, having read the author’s The Trouble with Cash set in Costa Rica, I read Spirits’ Gold since it was set in the Ivory Coast and I’d learn more about that part of Africa. (I’m also a gold bug with some gold dust in a vault somewhere.)

In creating a mystery/thriller involving the theft of gold from a mine and its connection to political upheaval, the author uses his intimate knowledge of having worked in the country’s gold mining industry and in its culture to bring credibility to events. It’s easy to find yourself in the heat, rains and forests of the Ivory Coast The author uses mainly the viewpoint of a local Ivorian servant boy, Kwame, as an observer to reveal many of the developments that include murders and an assassination attempt as the story grows to its climax. Other characters are corrupt mine officials, honest employees, and a dangerous army general. The honest employees are Conner, sent by the owners to investigate why the mine has been losing gold, and Lyla, the Process Plant manager. Working together —and becoming more intimate—they investigate the death of a mineworker in a cyanide pond and discover not only that it was murder but also what is the cause of the loss of the gold and, worse, what the gold is being used for.

A thriller that keeps a reader engaged until its final page. Recommended for those who enjoy an escape to a foreign country for a bit of adventure and learn how gold is extracted. Buy some. It’s real money.
