Afflictions of an Unruly Passion is a solid publishing debut that makes no apologies, takes no prisoners, and is a highly erotic and at times enlightening read that thrills and arouses from start to finish.

The story follows Valentine Godwin, a young liberated woman living in the confines of late 19th century Britain. She is sent to a Scottish asylum where she finds evidence of society’s abuses towards various women who were also sentenced there, and the mysterious and handsome doctor, Augustus Blackmoore, assigned to her care.

Philippa Maquente helps immerse the reader thanks to a prose that fits the time period and she is especially skilled and the various and very erotic scenes presented but also allows the plot to flow and breathe naturally. This would be a tough balance but Maquente pulls this balance off flawlessly. It also helps that many of the characters-Valentine and August especially-are well written and developed, with dialogue that helps define them and bring them to life.

If you enjoy historical fiction and erotic fiction, Afflictions is worth the read.
