This book has one of the best openings I've ever read anywhere. I wish I could recommend it, but I can't.

The character's are all guys who hang out at Primo's bar in the Hawaiian islands. They are quirky and funny. I enjoyed the first few stories and I've spent a few nights on a bar stool listening to such stories. However my scope in literature is a bit broader than that and after awhile I felt listening to stories from a very limited group became tedious.

The reason I can't recommend this book for any reason is that it depicts a guy who owns fighting cocks as a pretty alright fellow. Then later it has grown men trap a gecko and a rat together to fight to the death.

I can only say, do not ever recommend to me books that glorify animal cruelty. It makes me sick.

I've been so pleased when people told me how they enjoyed this book . . . and how much they laughed at it. I even had one guy call me and read a part of the book to me. And you know, I had forgotten that I had written the part he read to me. And it was good.

. . . the little town of Kapaa on the island of Kaua'i is the setting for this fun story; even better for me, since our daughter and son own and operate a family restaurant in the little town of Kapaa. This book has some local legends, too ! ! !
