BLACK AND WHITE INTERIOR EDITION 3 humanoid alien teens live in the Cayser System 100 years in the future. During a diplomatic event there is a coup d'état - their planet is attacked by the Grebles, evil, angry inhabitants of the fire planet, Oburna. Zephyr, a commander and young warrior, escapes on her ship but before she can hyperspace jump, her ship gets rammed, which knocks her off course. She crash lands on Earth where she's captured and taken to Area 51, and experimented on by cruel White Coats. Her friends, Destin and Tessia Kincaid, follow her, are attacked in Earth's orbit and crash land, too. The siblings are taken to Area 51 where they reunite with Zephyr. There they meet another member of the Cayser System who has been there a lot longer than they have, a young doctor about their age. They are all experimented on, sticking together to stay alive. Unfortunately, it's revealed to the Area 51 scientists that Destin has a secret power, but it drains his life force. Regardless, the White Coats use him anyway. There are races on sea and battles in space, aircraft and locomotives, young romance, dragons and missions and the teens must sacrifice so much for their friends and family while time is running out between being saved and Destin's draining life force.
The Dauntless Chronicles by Willow Wren and Anthony Olmo is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive novel with brilliantly drawn characters and settings. The threads of storytelling are expertly woven in this space fantasy adventure that will guarantee the attention of the reader. A skillfully constructed action-packed sci-fi, this book will have you turning the pages from beginning to end. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. Absolutely loved it and highly recommend it! A well-deserved five stars from me.
This book presumably qualifies as steampunk. We have this civilization from the Cayser system that uses steam-powered ships to race across oceans at about 45 knots, or lurch between stars travelling through hyperspace. (I may have missed it, but I am not sure exactly what generates the steam.) This is obviously a genre not exactly based firmly on physics. However, the technology is a given. The MCs leave their planet in a hurry due to an alien invasion, get captured on Earth in Area 51, get experimented on, and eventually . . . The writing is fun, the descriptions are clear so the story is easy to follow and get involved with. The storyline at times drifts from what I consider reasonable, and without specifying the example, the ending makes no real sense if you accept the start. There is an element of magic (one character has "mechanical advantage" and can talk to machines). However, for me there is one thing that sets it apart, and makes up for the flaws: because it is written by young adults for young adults, the characters "feel" young. They have the youthful spirit, which is extremely difficult to get from most YA writers, and because there are two authors, the males and females seem plausibly different. Well done.
As an avid reader and lover of fantasy, I was excited when I heard about this book. I purchased it on launch day and dove in to the adventure.
As stated in the title of my review, I found this to be a solid first book for these collaborators. The story was interesting, had good pacing, and had some unexpected twists. The aliens' home world and neighboring planets were meticulously detailed, as were deities and literal space ships.
Unfortunately, the same attention was not given to the culture and dialogue of the aliens. If I weren't regularly told that these were aliens from other planets, I would have forgotten. The overall language, particularly the slang and phraseology, was that of American teens, which is understandable yet jarring. The culture also did not feel alien but seemed Earthen.
In addition, the editing needed a bit more work. It wasn't the worst editing job I've read, but several times I was jolted from the story by a typo or grammatical error.
Overall I enjoyed the book. Despite the flaws mentioned, I would like to know what happens next, and I look forward to the next book.
Congratulations to these two young authors. I'm excited to see how your writing matures and improves.
