A well-crafted mystery for the younger reader...

I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. It’s a story that had every element a good story should have; A solid plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I look for in a good book. Highly recommended for readers aged 12 and up.

The Old House By The Woods by Soma Kar is an intriguing Ria Robertson Mystery that will thrill teenagers who love a good mysterious thriller. Ria Robertson is a private investigator who is well-equipped in police protocol, martial arts, and solving difficult cases. She is visited by a woman whose house is haunted, only to find out the previous owner's death was suspicious. A large animal is killing people around this house. Can Ria and her sister, Jenny, and best friend, Andy discovers the answer before another killing occurs?
Soma Kar is an author that draws her readers in from the first page. The Old House By The Woods begins with a mystery and quickly builds upon that until you realize you have already read half the book. I used to read ‘The Secret Seven’ by Enid Blyton during my school days. But gradually , I shifted to spiritual and self-help genres. It is after many years I lay my hands on detective /mystery book and I absolutely loved it.
About two months ago, Eve came to live here in the town of Mistgrove along with her family. She found an old house by the woods with the help of her family friend, Henry, who is also a real estate agent. But she dint knew that the old house is a haunted property and there were a couple of deaths in past of those who lived in this house and sightings of a beastly nocturnal creature in the garden. Worried by all these spooky and scary things, Eve approaches Ria Roberston , who was a successful private detective in her early thirties. Detective Ria sets on this adventure to solve this mysterious along with her friend , Andy and her sister, Jenny. So, Is the house really haunted or something else is brewing. Well, read the book to know more.
The language is easy and writing style is both flowy and captivating. Vocabulary is enriched. Narrations are vivid and flowy. The characters are tactfully sketched and there are many characters , which made the story interesting. I fell in love with the detective , Ria Robertson for her wits and cleverness. The pace of the story was fine and story was very eventful. The story was narrated in a way that I felt it is all happening for real.
I loved the way author created element of suspense throughout the story and the end really blew my mind. It was fantastic . Really loved it! The author was giving the information as and when needed. As a reader , I kept guessing who could be the villain of the story but I reached nowhere. I loved the way author narrated and executed the whole story.
The cover page and title caught my attention. Thus, I lay my hands on the book and I am glad I did it. The illustrations (sketches) in the book were like cherry on the cake for me. Special appreciations for the sketches. They aided the visualization of the reader.
I feel the book can be made into a movie or a part of web series. Waiting eagerly for more such mysteries to be solved by Ria Robertson. Request the author to keep adding to this series.

In The Old House By The Woods by Soma Kar, we are introduced to ex-police officer protagonist Ria Robertson, an accomplished private detective who has made a name for herself by getting to the bottom of perplexing cases that are yet to be resolved. Ria is enlisted by Eve; a widowed mother of one who has recently moved town, to probe into the terrifying incidents that have led her and her family to believe their new home is haunted. Ria’s sister, Jenny and best friend, Andy help her to piece together the seemingly hidden skeleton in the closet of the ancient house and surrounding sinister woods. Will the words of a dying man uttered moments before his last breath be the key to unravelling this murderous plot?
I absolutely loved the inclusion of the coloured illustrations. They are beautifully done and of an extremely high quality. It is a noteworthy and distinguishing factor that makes this book stand out from others in the same young adult mystery genre. The author’s style of prose holds a natural charm, and the secretive way in which she lets the story unfold keeps you turning the pages and not wanting to put the book down! The character development is wonderfully done, and the variety of personas presented helps grip your attention thoroughly. I particularly enjoyed how well thought out the storyline was, and how the images so accurately portray what the author is saying.
In conclusion, I would say it is an absolute joy to read! The fascinating twists and turns serve to activate your imagination, as you strive to solve the puzzle yourself before all is revealed. This mystery novel is one of a kind. This is my favourite genre and the one that I choose whenever I want to read something interesting and entertaining and “The Old House by the Woods” written by Soma Kar didn’t disappoint me. On the contrary, I really enjoyed it.
Accompanied by great illustrations, this book tells the story of private detective Ria Robertson who is hired to investigate and solve mysterious occurrences that are happening in Eve’s new house. As the case grows more and more complicated, Ria will realise that their lives are in danger. Will she be able to save them all?
This hard-hitting, fast-moving plot is complemented with well-drawn characters and descriptive prose to create this great story. I highly recommend it.

I loved this book, I actually decided to read this book aloud to my younger cousin of twelve years old and she and I both liked it. She’s not much of a reader so she enjoyed the pictures that were present every couple pages and enjoyed that I read it aloud to her as well so she didn’t have to read it herself. Ria, Andy, and Jenny reminded me of the Scooby Doo gang. Roa is daring, Andy is caring, and Jenny is smart. They are trying to solve a huge mystery that as you keep reading gets more difficult to try to guess what’s going on! It was so exciting to read and get clues slowly and just when you think you know who is the culprit, out comes other details to keep the adventure going. The ending is great and we were super satisfied with how it turned out. I loved this book and it’s such a great read. I got spooked at some points and really enjoyed the illustrations. Highly recommended!

In the vein of the Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys mystery series, this book is a mystery story geared for younger teens and even middle-schoolers. Ria Robertson is a retired officer turned private detective. She loves the challenge of solving puzzles and following the clues that will lead her to the solutions of a crime. As she is investigating the haunted house in Mistgrove, she unexpectedly comes face to face with a killer who is determined to continue his crimes.
This might not sound like a story for younger kids, but I read this book with my daughter and it wasn’t grisly or scary. I know my 8-year-old certainly enjoyed reading this book. She really liked the addition of the colored illustrations, and I think those esp. helped keep her attentions throughout the story. There were a few spooky moments, (haunted house), and yes some tension that is present in most mysteries, but this is certainly a book that younger readers can enjoy.

this book was very weirdly written. it is almost as if it was translated into English from a different language because not only were there a ton of grammatical errors, but words were often in the wrong order or used completely wrong. I was very confused as to what country this story takes place in because of the conflicting language used. for example, the word "cheque" and "torch" are British words and then the words "flashlight" and "dollars" are clearly American. very confusing.
one thing that was odd was that although it was written last year, it takes place in 1990, but there was a use of the term "OMG," which did not come into use until the use of beepers and then cellphones capable of alphabetic messages and not just numerical messages in the mid-to late 90's. just a little thing but it continues that theme of odd and inconsistent writing.
as for the actual story, it was very Scooby-Doo, which in itself isn't a bad thing. in fact, it is the only reason that I finished the book and that I gave it any stars at all. after the solution of the case, I was expecting the bad guy to say, "And I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling kids!" I had an odd compulsion to finish the book, just because I do love me some Scooby-Doo and I just had to know the identity of the person behind the mask.
I would not recommend this book, as it was completely awkward to read. I found myself continually re-reading sentences trying to understand not what was actually written, but what the author actually meant to say.

This is a gut-gripping whodunnit that keeps the pages flying! I enjoyed the writing (simple yet descriptive), the illustrations (unusual in a YA cozy yet absolutely unique), and the suspense. A fresh new style in the genre. Thoroughly entertaining.

For some reason, the imagery conjured by Soma brings about the dark feel of the age bigfoot tale. Another plus to The Old House by The Woods is the length of contents. Soma keeps her chapters concise and brings each one to a fitting end that urges the reader on to the next for more. I am giving this book, by Soma Kar, 5 out of 5 stars. With a surprisingly relatable cast of characters and an engaging and fascinating plot surrounding the phenomenon spy mystery, it will appeal to readers across genres. The Old House by The Woods is easily one of the most engaging books in the detective/mystery genre I have encountered.

April 5, 2021The Old House By The Woods by Soma Kar is a cosy middle grade mystery that's sure to get you and your child equally hooked into reading. It opens with introducing us to Ria Robertson, an ex-police officer and a successful detective as she receives a desperate call from a perspective client and then the story quickly proceeds to lay on the plot. It's intricately woven, fast paced and thrilling. The writing is simple yet detailed. As Ria's investigation of the mysterious occurrences of the haunting house delves deeper, readers can't help but hold their breath and keep making wild assumptions. The story is continuously complimented with colourful, vivid illustrations and the the supporting characters adds to the delight.
Definitely a great book for both children and adults alike.
Also, I must mention how important the representation is. Growing up we hardly had strong female characters to look upto. I'm glad children today have such books available to them.

I've not expected to love this book as much as I did and I'm really happy I gave it a try. I was expecting action and mystery but I wasn’t prepared for the twists and turns that the author, Soma Kar, presented page after page. I couldn’t explain exactly what I felt when I thought I knew what was going on or I had it all figured out and everything changed abruptly again in front of my eyes. Definitely, this is something I adored from this piece of work.
I greatly enjoyed the storyline and the other elements I looked for in a good book such as the characters. They are rich, well-developed and all of them play a significant role, even when they only seem to be minor characters. The thousand strings that tie together in the end are sublime.
This is a great masterpiece that had me engaged from the start, highly recommended.

Author Soma Kar has made her debut in writing thrillers with this intriguing and captivating story for young adults. The Old House by the Woods is the first book of the Ria Robertson series. The plot revolves around private detective Ria Robertson and Jenny and Andy, her two helpers who are hired to uncover a mystery in a haunted house. I was immersed in the book from the beginning to the last page. I found it really riveting and absorbing. It is action packed and there are many suspenseful scenes which made me want to keep on reading. Soma Kar has done a wonderful job in bringing the characters to life and in creating a mysterious tone throughout the novel. There is a feeling of danger all the time and there are key elements to solve the mystery spread all over the book. Definitely it’s a 5 star thriller.

The narrative is supported by on-point imagery, which I believe has been a great addition to the narrative and a key element to catch young adults’ attention.

Mysterious and exciting!
I love detective novels. Almost any kind. It always amazes me the work that goes into them (any novel, really), and "The Old House By the Woods" by Soma Kar is one of them. Fast-paced and exciting, it takes you in from the first few words. Ria Robertson is a relatable character that I fell in love with. An ex-police officer, Ria works as a private detective and gets hired. The mystery she has to solve in this book kept me on the edge of my seat, and just when I thought I knew what was going on, I realized I did not. Ria is joined by Jenny and Andy, they run to solve the case! Wonderfully detailed, I could not help but fall for these characters and their lives on paper. I am excited to read others of this series, and recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery!

I really liked that this book gave a mystery and thriller option to a younger audience of readers, specifically one that is age appropriate without too much graphic information or language used. I also loved the change of including colored illustrations that can help to paint a clear picture of what's being described for younger readers. Though the story is age-appropriate and written for readers who are mature enough to handle a story with chaos and suspense, I like that the story maintained a bit of the fitting features, like the illustrations, for the younger readers. I love a story that's full of twists and turns and this one did not disappoint to pull my attention in until the end. This one was easily a good choice for teen readers as well as adults.

Ria Robertson is the strong and clever role model the world needs. In this fast-paced and adventurous “whodunit” mystery, Ria investigates everything from paranormal activity to a murder. Every page will keep you on your toes trying to solve the puzzle. I couldn’t put it down. It was such a fun read!

The colorful cover of “The Old House by The Woods” caught my attention at first glance. The aesthetics of the illustrations, even inside, is very attractive. They really enrich the mystery story.
Same as most mysteries, the plot is not predictable and full of suspense. But in this case, author Soma Kara perfectly put together the puzzle pieces of the engaging plot, giving birth to a thriller that left me on the edge of my seat with every turn of the page. Although it is aimed at young adults, it will appeal to mystery book readers across ages.

“The Old House by the Woods” written by Soma Kar is a mystery and drama novel with lots of twists and turns that left me speechless in some parts. This short-length text is supported by dramatic illustrations which capture the conflict perfectly. In fact, the drawings are particularly entertaining and I really enjoyed them.
The language is very realistic and that is why the story soon got me involved, making this a non-stoppable read. In fact, the dialogues are so real that I could feel as if I was just there in the story.
All in all, I thoroughly recommend this book because it is a highly entertaining read and I had an amazing time with it.

A spooky, entertaining novel
This is an action-packed story that I could enjoy at the edge of my comfortable sofa. “The Old House by the Woods” is a gripping mystery story penned by Soma Kar. I was glued to the pages from the very beginning. It is another example of the whodunit genre. It has so many spooky and unexpected situations that I couldn´t put it down. As I am a visual person, the bits that I liked the most were the drawings of the story. Apart from that, it is an easy-to-read novel with very dynamic and complex characters. Their dialogues are very realistic making it easy to empathize with them. So, all in all, I highly recommend it to lovers of the genre.

Ria Roberson was an expert in martial arts, ex-police officer and private detective. She was hired by Eve to investigate creepy events in her new house. Here is when an incredible adventure began, which takes the reader through a lot of mysteries that will be solved by the characters.
I don't usually like books with pictures because I think they limit my imagination, but this one has some funny drawings that I really enjoyed. Also, it is fast-paced and is written with simple vocabulary. For these reasons, I consider that it is a great book to read anywhere and anytime.

This novel captivated me from the title. “The Old House by The Woods” is a great written mystery with very rich characters. It has that old-school vibe that I love that also reminds me of the books I used to read in my mom's house. I also like the illustration the novel has; it complements the story very nicely.
I’m all about strong female characters and this book did not disappoint. Ria, the private detective fits that role perfectly. Her sister and a friend also jump into detective mode to help Ria solve this mystery.
This is a great novel to enjoy not only mystery but also a good female representation.

The old house by the woods, by Soma Kar, is a story that is not long and that is fast paced, perfect for a weekend read. Author Kar made a great job writing this mystery novel that got me reading at the edge of my seat after every turn it had.
I love the types of whodunit mysteries, and this one is a great example of them. Full of twists and turns, this novel got me guessing what would happen next, almost at every turn of the page. The main characters were excellently crafted, all according to their age.
I recommend reading this story because it has a development that I really liked and an ending that surprised me.

After reading this book, it became one of my favorites. "The Old House By The Woods" is a gripping book written by Soma Kar. Perfectly illustrated, this read is impressive.
The author introduces us to Eve who hires Ria Robertson, an ex-police officer and private detective, to investigate certain paranormal activities, but can they find out what is happening?
The passage from scene to scene is exceptional; I think the author has a gift that makes this reading a best seller. The illustrations are very good, and while it is not a long book, it is super engaging. I highly recommend this illustrated mystery book.

Fascinating mystery
As soon as I started reading “The Old House by the Woods” by Kar, I was spellbound.
The book opens up to a great cover, which contains a colourful drawing that made me feel I was about to read a vintage book. At that moment, I felt intrigued because I remember the great old mysteries I used to read when I was a child.
Of course, Kar’s piece is a spectacular fiction, but I must say I was so convinced by its plot that I thought I was penetrating a real - or possible - situation.
I devoured the reader because I felt trapped. I loved it from the very first chapter and I think young people might like it, too.

Reading this book was like taking a breath of fresh air. It was such a good page-turner that I could barely put it down! The story was very well built, especially because there wasn’t any page where the action stalled or the description was too long or unnecessary.
I enjoyed the fact that the mystery wasn’t cleared off too early in the book. It’s quite difficult to give a lot of information to the readers, but not too much so the surprise of who did it won’t be spoilt, but Soma Kar did it brilliantly! I enjoyed the story very much and to be honest, I find it perfect for a hot summer afternoon.
I enjoyed the fact that the mystery wasn’t cleared off too early in the book. Nancy drew and the like, first drew me to mystery fiction. I thought I would read this to get some idea of how that category of had changed over time.
From this book, I have to conclude it isn't improving. I'm certainly not impressed with the writing style of Soma Kar. It may be that this is a translation? That might explain the awkward sentence construction and general use of words. If it is a translation, where is her editor???
Lastely, the plot is ridiculous and the characters are poorly developed. All we really know is tha Ria is amazing and everyone is overwhelmed by her bravery and detection skills......so, a bit like Nancy Drew!

The Old House By The Woods by Soma Kar is such an amazing book., I can't believe that it actually took so long to pick up this series and I'm definitely enjoying it so far.
I love the whole build up throughout and even the quick face off with the mystery at the end, this book definitely shows a little more emotion between the characters and the growth in friendships between them, it's certainly setting a picture of how you can see the story growing which I'm looking forward to reading and being a part of.
I would definitely recommend this one to all YA Thirller /Mystery lovers!
