Chucked full of hints, how-to's, and interesting ways to have adventures, this is a great book for young campers to pick up before hitting nature.
There are 35 projects in this book, all rotating around camping and being in the great outdoors. The author begins with a foreword about her own thoughts about camping with kids, and then, she adds a pack list for parents. The book is divided into five chapters, which break up the camping experience from trails to setting up camp and such. Each of these chapters has a picture, which is located in the upper corner of each page, so it's easy to find the chapters by just flipping through. Then, each chapter is broken down into activities.
The chapters start with a brief description as well as a list of what skills are found in the next pages. Each skill/activity starts with a short intro and then dives right into a 1,2,3... list of what to do. After that, there is a colored box with more information, a closer look at the activity or any other thoughts, which could prove insightful. All of this is accompanied by illustrations to help make it clear what's going on. At the end of the book, there is a list of the badges which can be 'won' at the end of each chapter and a couple pages about breaking camp. So, there is a lot in this book
The activities are quite broad in theme. Some relate directly to camping (fire, smores, etc), while others rotate around nature and hiking (star constellations, clouds, plant life). The directions are easy to understand. While some can be done by the kids alone, others might require a bit of help from the parents. But I did enjoy the variety, since there is something for everyone, although not everyone will like everything. It's also a flat, flexible book, which will fit nicely into any backpack.
In other words, this one gets a thumbs up from me.
