Success is Not a Fluke: Six Easy Steps to Achieving Any Goal

Rate this book
“An amazing life is a matter of choice.”

Success in any endeavor can be achieved in just six essential steps. With these six steps, anyone can consciously elevate their life beyond their wildest expectations.

Alon Ulman knows how unexpected life can be. In a plane above the Mediterranean Sea, Alon suddenly found he couldn’t breathe. After landing he was rushed to hospital where his survival from a spontaneous collapsed lung was deemed a medical miracle. A few years later Alon would complete the famously grueling Ironman. From the moment he crossed the finish line, he realized his life’s purpose: dedicating himself to exploring the DNA of practical success and making it accessible to people everywhere.

Everybody wants success and fulfillment, but even people who work hard miss out, and when they do succeed, they often chalk it up to luck. But success isn’t a fluke. It has rules that can be learned and harnessed with unbelievable ease, speed, and power.

In his vivid style, Alon tells his own story of transformation and the lessons he learned along the way. He shows how you can instill practices to harness genuine passion every day, including journalling prompts, practical models for happiness, ways to exercise your courage, and guidance to create a bespoke action plan.

There are literally dozens of self-help books on the market and all of them are pretty much the same and carry the same basic message, however, this one is markedly different and it follows a series of events, one traumatic, in the life of the author, a former officer in the Israeli navy. The book opens with the author and his wife in a Turkish Hotel, when he takes ill with a spontaneously collapsed lung and can’t breathe. He is not prepared to take the risk of going into the local hospital and persuades a doctor to give him enough pain relief to allow him to get on a ‘plane and back to Israel. Actually the book, which is liberally peppered with positive and life-affirming quotes from the author, is a kind of stream-of-consciousness’ account of how he came to a series of life-changing decisions that culminated in him becoming a highly successful motivational speaker and author. He clearly demonstrates in six stages, that as the book says, success is not a fluke and you can do various things to help ensure that it happens. One plus-point about this book is that it can be read as a kind of biography and a text book too, very enjoyable. Success here I come!

Success means doing what you set out to do — even if you fail. I'm a writer so success is every time I write. Even if no-one reads it.

What's holding you back?

Fear of success. Fear of failure. Imposter syndrome. Mostly fear. Nothing and no-one is keeping you from the success you deserve. Not really. If you see obstacles as outside your locus of control then you've a convenient excuse to do nothing about them.

If everyone lived truly happy, successful, and fulfilled lives then no-one would take out the bins. Metaphorically I mean. Society / the media wants to sell you the idea of success as something out of reach so that you have to keep striving for it. Like Tantalus.

This is a really interesting story and insight into Ulman's life as a commander in the military, deciding to become an Ironman and then his shift into the business world.

At some parts of the book, I was really into the story and found it very engaging and there were other parts that lacked substance for me. This book is less a self-help book and more a memoir of Ulman's life. His insights into what led him to success and how he honed his motivation were my favourite parts of the book. He really has an inspirational story, and I found it so interesting to learn about his life.

Unfortunately his "steps to success" were not very well-organised. Sometimes during the book, I found the direction and structure was a bit all over the place and hard to follow. The book needed more direction and editing to make it easier to take key advice from the book.

The key takeaway from this book is just DO IT! Here's a quote from the book that I particularly liked: "And why didn't I do it? Ah because of... karma, luck, fate, genetics, my wife, my boss, reserve duty, finances, the situation, the organisational culture, my children, the Finance Minister, the Prime Minister, bird flu, the fiscal cliff, the cost of cottage cheese.... But none of those fit. There just weren't the right conditions. And it's too bad, because I would have done it. Really!"

Long and sometimes tedious. Many of the same steps in similar books.

While this book tried to be a self-help guide for how to be successful, I felt it would have been a better fit in the memoir section.

A copy of this novel was given in exchange for an honest review.

This book starts off with some context about how the author came to be on this path. It starts off very scary but becomes very inspiring and motivational. It’s a story about how Ulman turned his life around in spite of the odds — where he gets his strength from, I’ll never know! But perseverance is key and the author reaps the benefits of his hard work.

Ulman shares with us the wisdom of he imparts during his popular, coveted seminars to help others essentially get their lives together. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read, and I personally took a lot away from it that will help shape my life and my attitude going forward.

It’s a real feel-good book; I would recommend it to anyone in a rut, and particularly people interested in sports and fitness.
