A wonderful gem of a book, deceptively simple yet profoundly deep. I have read through this book twice already and each time I find “keeper” phrases and heartfelt lessons in each chapter. Told in a gentle narrative that is soothing and inspiring.
The story centers on Birdy who finds herself in a pit of despair convinced her life is nothing but worthless dirt, but that changes when she meets a mysterious man in a garden. Who is he? How does he know so much about her and how to unlock the peace she so desperately seeks? Working together daily both the garden and Birdy are transformed beautifully.
I have not enjoyed an allegory such as this since I last read The Chronicles of Narnia. This is truly an allegory of hope that is relatable to everyone of all ages. A lovely story beautifully illustrated as well that will become a timeless treasure. Well worth reading time and time again.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my review and am thankful I did!
This was an excellent book ! I read it as a book club choice with the women's ministry at my church. It is an allegory, or a fairy tale for adults. This story takes Birdy from a bit of a mess to a wonderful, kind, and compassionate woman. The story spans her lifetime. The allegory is a garden. How God can take a barren, abused, garbage filled empty lot and turn it into a sumptuous garden with a free flowing fountain, green house, swing, etc. This story particularly touched me, as the daughter of a gardener. The garden is our life, our inner life. If we submit to God, he can change us from a bereft empty shell to a person with a vibrant life that touches and blesses others.
It was a very moving read. In some parts, it seems simple, childlike, then it really hits you. I highly recommend it.
Hands down the best book I have ever read. I have recommended this book to every single young lady that I counsel. This book gives you a close up of what your relationship with the father could look like if you just allowed him into your garden. Every woman needs to read this book! I’d rate it 10 stars if I could.
