A Catechism for Business: Tough Ethical Questions & Insights from Catholic Teaching

Rate this book
In the four years since the publication of the second edition of A Catechism for Business, Pope Francis' enormous contributions to spreading the good news of the gospel has led to his promulgation of two apostolic exhortations and now a new encyclical, Fratelli tutti, focusing on human fraternity and solidarity. The vibrant tradition of Catholic thinking on social issues is unparalleled in its capacity to help guide human beings towards individual and communal flourishing. The context of a world emerging from a pandemic and new challenges to Christian faith and practice beckon for a refreshed look at pressing questions. Editors Andrew Abela and Joseph Capizzi offer the updated third edition which will incorporate material from both of these apostolic exhortations and the new encyclical.

Good collection of sources. Would have been nice to have some commentary from business professionals in addition to the sources to make it more practical/applicable.

I'm not much of a spiritual person anymore, but I read this back in college and thought the book did a great job of reflecting Catholic morals in the world of business.

This book should be in on the bookshelf - and within arms reach - of every Catholic executive trying to make his or her way in today's world of commerce. And I would strongly suggest to my many non-catholic friends that they should dive into this short but robust book if they are in search of guidance or vision on how to best run a business and work in an increasingly ethically challenged world. Abella and Capizzi do not give prescriptive answers to the tough questions ranging from fair wage to operating businesses in China. But what they do do is provide the wisdom and vision of Church teachings, historical texts, etc. that provide very rich food for thought and hopefully guidance for each of us to find the right - and just - answer to the challenges we each face in the workplace.

I'm giving this book as a Christmas gift to many of my colleagues and clients this Christmas (no, not "holiday season"). I hope it helps them even a fraction of how it has helped me - and will continue to help me for many years to come.
